Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift Book Summary

Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World. In Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver, First a Surgeon, and then a Captain of Several Ships, better known simply as Gulliver's Travels (1726, amended 1735), is a novel by Irish writer and clergyman Jonathan Swift, that is both a satire on human nature and a parody of the "travellers' tales" literary sub-genre. It is Swift's best known full-length work, and a classic of English literature. The book became popular as soon as it was published. John Gay wrote in a 1726 letter to Swift that "It is universally read, from the cabinet council to the nursery." [1] Since then, it has never been out of print. Cavehill in Belfast is thought to be the inspiration for the novel. Swift imagined that the mountain resembled the shape of a sleeping giant safeguarding the city. [2]

Gullivers travels. A very awesome book you have to read it

Ok book. It was a great adventure book. A bit slow.

The movie is awesome!!!. I saw it on 12/27/10 and it was amazing! Jack Black is so hilarous! I'm seeing it again today!!

@Benjamin. SAME! good book too!

Half of Original.. This has only two of the four journeys that comprise Gulliver's Travels. The 3rd & 4th voyages are omitted; only Lilliputian and Brobdingnag make the cut. That said, the hyperlinked footnotes for archaic words are useful and a sign that more work went into this than some others put into their i/e-books.

Nice!. I like this book itโ€™s very nice and I love reading it one of my favorite books

Very Good Book. The style and language choice of the author was exquisite and ensued a delightful book.

An Incomplete Classic for Kids. As the preface states, "The punctuation and capitalization have been modernized, some archaisms changed, and the paragraphs have been made more frequent. A few passages have been omitted which would offend modern ears and are unsuitable for children's reading, and some foot-notes have been added explaining obsolete words and obscure expressions." Additionally, it should be noted that the original Gulliver's Travels had four voyages, while this has only the first two. Admittedly the treatment herein makes an easier read, but those wanting the complete original version should hit Project Gutenberg instead.

Movie. Didn't they also make this into a movie?

Boring!. I am a quick reader, can read an interesting novel in a couple hours, but it took me two days to finish the first page of this book.

Reader Beware. This book has been censored, so it's not true to it's original form.

Only includes half the book. Good book, but this version is 2 parts short.

Incomplete. Why are parts 3 and 4 not included?

Avoid this edited and incomplete version. Warning, this is the "children's version", which is missing several passages deemed unsuitable for minors. And it is only the first two of the four voyages in the complete text. Lots of typos, too.

Great book. This book is amazing .thumbs up

Warning!. This is not the complete book, it's missing part three (a third of the book) and cut some parts out. I found out the hard way and read the whole thing and then realized all it was missing went I went online!

Good. Very good can't wait to see the movie

Missing Part 3 & 4. Only the first two travels!

Wonderful but incomplete. This is a classic and I would recommend the full version to anyone, but this version fails to include Gulliver's last two voyages. The only way one would know this is to preview the table of contents, as it is not stated clearly in the introduction.

Insightful and Outrageous. Interesting plot-line with outrageous adventures that seem to be sending subliminal messages about society.

Guluvers travel. I like the movie better

Great. Great book love the description in it.

It was okay. Easy read

Hate it!!!!!. Sooooooooooo boring!! Don't read!!!!

Thumbs up!. Very amusing political satire

Gullivers travels.. It is nothing like the movie

Haven't read it. It looks like a good idea of a book mabey good

Voaugfuygarfo. I don't know but is it about the film???????????????????????? Can someone please tell me

Not the whole book!. This is only the first two parts. This means the reader will miss out on wonderful adventures, such as the floating island of Laputa, as well as the 4th part, which contains the meatiest satire for which the book was so lauded. The first two parts are the most famous, but kids' stuff.

Bowdlerised. As others have said, this is not the whole book, and even those parts there are have been edited 'to make them appropriate for children' (how exactly did gulliver put out that fire?) A sad fate for one of the great works of English satire

Great. Great fantastic book!!

Gulliver's Travels. This is a bowdlerised version i.e. some passages have been excised to make it suitable for children. Grown-ups who want to read the original be warned!

Gullivers travels. Great book

Excellent. This is an excellent book. Though does have some boring moments.

Only half a book!. This is only the first half of the novel, and gives no indication of this fact. An average story, and a bad edition.

Gulliver's Travels. Love it !!!!

This is a great book. I would give this book a 4/5 star. It is very imaginative and always gets your mind going. I would recommend this to many people. :)

Gulliver's travels. A great work of English lit - but this edition misses out parts 3 and 4 which contain some of the best satirical writing in Gulliver's dealings with the houhynyms and the yahoos.

great. thanks iTunes somthing free and decent

Gullivers travels. A good book not my favourite but it was quite good. Very imaginative!

Half of a classic. This is parts 1 and 2 of Swift's best known classic book. It had foot notes explaining some of the archaic words.

Great book, excellent. I think the book is brilliant fantastic I think more people should get the book amazing

Terrific. After 300 years this book is just as readable and just as relevent as it was when it was published. It's a jolly romp through different and very strange lands, where the priorities and moral codes of the creatures encountered are very different from our own. Gulliver arrives at the land of the little (like 6 inches little) people, where the stupid people almost go to war over which end of a boiled egg should be cracked open, and the land of the giants (like 90 feet big) where he has the horror of watching a baby being fed and is himself treated like a doll. The flying islands where the inhabitants are into maths and music and the women are all bored. Another place where to be slovenly is the greatest achievement. Finally the most biting satire is on the island ruled by gentle and intelligent horses who don't lie or steal or go to war. The humans on this island are ugly and vicious and kept as servants. The stories are interesting and fun and many of the points about human frailties are depressingly spot on.

Merry Christmas!!! ๐ŸŽ…๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŽ. Good book but like others have said it is very much down-graded. It misses out the best parts of the story. I do love Gulliver's Travels! I WAS going to get it for my friend at Christmas ๐ŸŽ ... Not any more I will have to find something else. I had to check if it was good enough first. ๐ŸŽ…๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŽ

Average.. Contains only the first two travels, missing the third and fourth. Lacking the random capitalisation of the original text. Not too bad for a free book though.

Gullivers travels. I was ok I wouldn't read it again

.... As I am a kid this book does not make much sense to me but it is still ok

Gulliver's travels. To review a classic is of itself daunting. I started reading this book when I was ten and finished it today at fifty four. To read the first adventure which most of us know without having turned a page was like visiting an old friend - not reading the second is like admiring one side of a coin and never turning it over to discover the artists work on the other side. Loved it, only hope I don't take quite so long to read or re-read the other classics.

Who are we to judge?. A classic in English literature. A colossus of fiction in its time. Still lessons to be learned from it today. Considering how old it is, itโ€™s remarkable that many observations the author made still hold true.

Argh!. So, this copy of Gulliver's Travels does not include Parts 3 & 4! Half of the story is missing. I don't know why or how this would have happened, but it ends with the conclusion of Part 2 which is quite abrupt, as there is obviously more story to tell! I did enjoy the first two parts. This is a fantastic piece of work, but this is not the copy that you want to buy. There is another free copy available here that has the entire story, which is well worth the read!!

Great stuff. Really enjoying it, half way through.

Brilliant!. A wonderfully written satire that is still applicable today.

Pieces are missing. Not only are parts 3 and 4 missing from this book โ€ฆ but selections of the text have been omitted for some apparent reason.
