Night Road by Kristin Hannah Book Summary

Vivid, universal, and emotionally complex, Kristin Hannah's Night Road raises profound questions about motherhood, identity, love, and forgiveness.

"A rich, multilayered reading experience, and an easy recommendation for book clubs." —Library Journal (starred review)

Life comes down to a series of choices.

To hold on…

To let go...to forget…to forgive…

Which road will you take?

For eighteen years, Jude Farraday has put her children's needs above her own, and it shows—her twins, Mia and Zach, are bright and happy teenagers. When Lexi Baill moves into their small, close-knit community, no one is more welcoming than Jude. Lexi, a former foster child with a dark past, quickly becomes Mia's best friend. Then Zach falls in love with Lexi and the three become inseparable.

Jude does everything to keep her kids out of harm's way. But senior year of high school tests them all. It's a dangerous, explosive season of drinking, driving, parties, and kids who want to let loose. And then on a hot summer's night, one bad decision is made. In the blink of an eye, the Farraday family will be torn apart and Lexi will lose everything. In the years that follow, each must face the consequences of that single night and find a way to forget…or the courage to forgive.

Vivid, universal, and emotionally complex, Night Road raises profound questions about motherhood, identity, love, and forgiveness. It is a luminous, heartbreaking novel that captures both the exquisite pain of loss and the stunning power of hope. This is Kristin Hannah at her very best, telling an unforgettable story about the longing for family, the resilience of the human heart, and the courage it takes to forgive the people we love.

"You cannot read Night Road and not be affected by the story and the characters. The total impact of the book will stay with you for days to come after it is finished." —The Huffington Post

Amazing!. One of the best books I have ever read! I loved it so much!

Night Road. Another winner, could not put it down. Life is about making adjustments and this book proves that. A must read.

AMAZINGGG. Best book I have read in a while. It was my first of Kristin Hannah's books and I am looking forward to reading them all!

Night Road. This was an amazing heartfelt powerful story. The way Kristin writes about Zach & Mia's love for one another is endearing! You can really see the powerful bond & love Jude had with her children! Ive already read it twice & cried twice!

Difficult Read but gals I didn’t stop. Kristin Hannah favorite authors. I often found myself wondering why I was reading this book, so tragic. I’m glad I stuck it out as in the end as usual Kristin Hannah delivered. Presented a very good life lesson for all mothers to hear. Grannie BB

Wonderful!. I didn't want this book to end. I fell in love with every character. This is my second Hannah novel and I will definitely be reading a third!

Great storyteller. Solid, full story that came to a complete circle.

Devastating, Eloquent and Hopeful. Beautifully written and worth the tears.

Enticing. Great story with wonderful messages for all ages, have read and reread this book numerous times.

Night Road. One of the best books I've read in a long time. My heart broke for Jude and as a mother wondered if I would have reacted the same way. Lexi was someone I wanted to wrap my arms around and give her the kind of childhood all children deserve. She was so young and had been through so much - a family and love was really all she wanted. It was hard to put it down and sorry went it was over.

Unbelievable. Not only do I know every bit of geography in this book having lived in Kitsap County for nearly 40 years, this story was our life ten years ago when our six-month old grandson was killed by a man who was not only in pain meds but also was texting. I cried literally through the entire second half of the book. The grief, the healing, the enduring love that holds this family together is what makes this book work. I almost didn’t read it because sometimes the grief still feels new. Ms. Hannah is a fantastic writer.

Night Road. Though I couldn't put this book down it was quite depressing - especially if you are a parent. I'm not sure I would've bought it if I realized how sad it would be ahead of time. I liked how well we got to know the characters - though I found Jude to be over the top at times. Definitely an engaging story - just sad!

Night Road. One of my most favorite books I've ever read! Cried & laughed! GREAT BOOK! I am now a Kristin Hannah follower!!!

Couldn’t put down!. So glad I read this book. I’ve never read any books by this author and now I’m excited to try another! She’s got a creative mind and her writing style is easy to read. I couldn’t put the book down!

Night Road. I should have known better. The mother of 18 & 19 year olds this was just too depressing for me.

Great read!. I really loved this book, I just started reading the books by this author and I have loved both of the ones I read. (This one and Angel Falls) It's a real tearjerker, and you really get to know the characters. A few things I found a little too much though is how the mother Jude acts toward the other characters, it's way over the top and too dramatic. Also I'm sorry but it made no sense why they spoke Spanish as well some times. Just because the kids took it for a year the whole family is going to start using it form then on in everyday conversation? Too unreal, that would not happen. I wondered though out the whole novel why they spoke it because they obviously are not Spanish themselves by the way they are described, so what's the point? There isn't one. It does get annoying. Both stories I've read she does this and I do not know why. Other then that great read.

Thanks. Thanks for writing this book. Loved it.

Night road. Incredibly moving. A great read

Loved it. Another great book by Hannah. She really has a way of making you connect with her characters.

Very boring and predictable. So incredibly predicable and. I expected a higher level of authorship from Kristin Hannah. The storyline, characters and plot were so formulaic as to be hokey. I actually cringed many times. And guess what, true to the blueprint,(spoiler alert) they all live happily ever after. Cringe.

Very engrossing. This book drew me in right away. Kristin Hannah writes fiction in a way that pulls you in and keeps you there, while being extremely relatable. She touches on subjects that all of us can have experienced: grief, love, loss, joy etc. This is an author who I only discovered last year and I cannot wait to read more of her books.

Tear jerker. *** spoiler alert I woke up the next morning after reading this, and instantly Became grateful for the people in my life. It truly is relatable, as my husband blames himself for his sister’s accident as well and has a previously drug enveloped mother. This book really tested my emotions. I cried reading this. The beauty, the heartache, the trauma and the peace. This was a masterpiece. I’m speechless.

As usual Kristin Hannah BLOWS US AWAY. This author never fails to disappoint. I love her and everything about her novels that she graciously shared with all of us true BIBLIOPHILES 😍❤️

night road. i hated reading books started with this and loved every bit of it well written it touched my heart i never wanted it to end.

Memories. I cried through a lot of this story as our son lost his life due to alcoholism. It started in high school and ultimately destroyed his liver. We visited him in jail, thinking it would be the worst experience so far but the other visitors looked just like us. Now, with 4 teenage grandsons I can only give words of caution and love and a lot of prayers. This book released a lot of the pain I’ve carried for a long time. The innocence, naïveté, hope, dreams and love were a thread I held onto. Finally as a gardener, the metaphor of the garden touched my heart. Thank you.

Amazing. This book was hands down 5 stars could not put it down!!

Nightingale. Awesome

Loved Night Road. This is the first book I have read of Kristin Hannah's. Like the other reviews, I laughed and then I cried! Great book, I literally read all 385 pages starting Friday night and finishing Sunday night!

Night Road. A profound read that I couldn't put down and certainly couldn't get out my head long after I had finished.

L. Davenport. Night Road: This was the very best book I’ve read by Kristin Hannah! I truly loved this book and cried in some parts.

Not as good as nightingale. I couldn’t stand the first half of the book. It felt like an old adult trying to write about high schoolers. Campy, basic, a bit cheesey and cliche. The second half got a bit more interesting but overall, I’d recommend passing if you’re older than 14.

Heartbreaking and fulfilling. Kristin Hannah’s gift for writing is evident in this story of love, romance and heartbreak. It will tear your heart into pieces and then put it back together again.

Loved it. Page turner!

Knight Road. Awesome:-)

Wonderful!. Could not put this book down, incredible.

Amazing". Awesome book. I love all of her books but this is right up there with Firefly Lane. A book that any mother can relate to. I cried and sobbed and read until my eyes could not follow the words on the pages then I woke up and read some more until I finished it. Could not put this book down.

Not as good as the nightingale. The nightingale is one of my favorite books. I recommend it to everyone. This book however fell flat for me. There were spots I cried my eyes out cause it was sad and well written but then other parts felt very amateur.

Beautiful. I don’t think I’ve ever wept so much. A gut wrenching story whose layers peel away right up until it’s end. Prepare to be pulled in deeply -there are parts that will resonate with everyone. Cast no stones before reading this !

Must read!!!!. Such a wonderful book. A story of the reality of the heart.

MUST READ!. Could not put this book down from the second I started to read it. A truly great novel.

Had me in tears.. I am not a big reader, let me just point that out. I have read many books, not on my own will, and most are really boring and difficult to finish. I had to read a book for a school report, so I chose Night Road. I read the first few pages, and immediately became attached. I ended up reading the whole book in a day. This is a story I will keep with me my whole life. It is beautifully written, and at a certain point, it had me uncontrollably crying. I recommend this book for everyone, especially teens, in which I am one. And let me just say, this message really got to me, and I hope it will get to everyone who reads it. Thank you Kristin Hannah for an amazing story.

Couldn’t put it down. I absolutely love this book. It picks up where it needs and, draws you in. I loved it!

Best Book Ever....!!!!!!!!. I laughed, I cried, I cried again, and I continued to cry. This book changed the way I looked at life, made me re think the choices I've made.. And made see things from a different view. This was honestly the most amazing story I've ever read, and I recommend to anyone... Even if you think it isn't your "type" of book.. Amazing

Night Road, the title, does not give away the plot of the book.. I enjoyed the book very much. The book gave meaning to the power of choices, friendship, love and forgiveness. Lexi loves with all her heart and must explore how she handles different moral decisions. This book would be great for a parent to read with the teen during the Junior year of high school. Discussion of how different characters handle situations could help the teen think through handling them in his/her own life.

Get ready for some tears!. Emotional book for any mother. Great pick for book clubs!

Kind of boring and repetitive. I loved The Nightingale and Winter Garden, but this one was very disappointing. Boring, repetitive. I ended up skimming through it out of boredom.

😩. Disappointing. Too drawn out. Favorite author but not liking this book At all.

Night road. A thought provoking novel for me; mother of two high school students.. Highly recommended.

Night Road. Riveting! First book in awhile that kept me in thrall!

Last chance for me with this author. After reading The Great Alone, I have been so disappointed by her other books. No comparison. This book was long and pointless.

Night Road. One of the best books I’ve ever read! It’s been about 5 or 6 years since I read it but remember almost everything about this book! A great read!

Amazing!. Couldn't put this book down! Love they way Kristin writes this book!

Night road. Best book I have ever read.

Night Road. It's been a very long time since a book has stirred up so many feelings in me, happiness, devastation, sorrow, hope and, finally, a sense of peace. Thank you for this beautiful story.

Great read!. This was my first novel by this author and I loved it. I am a mother who has lost a child and I thought that the emotions expressed were really on track. I was disappointed that it wasn't longer.

The symbolic and heartfelt amazement. I love this book. It it literally my favourite book ever and I could read it a thousand times and still never be bored of it. There are some books that just transform you, this is mine. It's so symbolic and it embodies so many amazing features that will make you laugh, cry, and everything all over. Some people don't even get the same little details that really make this book so great. But gosh, I'll tell you, I hope that you are remembered for this amazing work Kristin Hannah because you truly deserve it. I can't even explain how amazing it is, read it and see for yourself, you won't regret it.

Couldn’t stop reading it. This is one of the best books I’ve ever read.

The night road. This book was the best book j have read in my entire life. 1 all nighter and 15 mental breakdowns later I had to get up to go to school! You can really connect with the characters and feel what they feel.
