Catch-22 by Joseph Heller Book Summary

This fiftieth-anniversary edition commemorates Joseph Heller’s masterpiece with a new introduction; critical essays and reviews by Norman Mailer, Alfred Kazin, Anthony Burgess, and others; rare papers and photos; and much more.

Nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read.

Now a Hulu limited series starring Christopher Abbott, George Clooney, Kyle Chandler, and Hugh Laurie.

Fifty years after its original publication, Catch-22 remains a cornerstone of American literature and one of the funniest—and most celebrated—books of all time. In recent years it has been named to “best novels” lists by Time, Newsweek, the Modern Library, and the London Observer.

Set in Italy during World War II, this is the story of the incomparable, malingering bombardier, Yossarian, a hero who is furious because thousands of people he has never met are trying to kill him. But his real problem is not the enemy—it is his own army, which keeps increasing the number of missions the men must fly to complete their service. Yet if Yossarian makes any attempt to excuse himself from the perilous missions he’s assigned, he’ll be in violation of Catch-22, a hilariously sinister bureaucratic rule: a man is considered insane if he willingly continues to fly dangerous combat missions, but if he makes a formal request to be removed from duty, he is proven sane and therefore ineligible to be relieved.

This fiftieth-anniversary edition commemorates Joseph Heller’s masterpiece with a new introduction by Christopher Buckley; a wealth of critical essays and reviews by Norman Mailer, Alfred Kazin, Anthony Burgess, and others; rare papers and photos from Joseph Heller’s personal archive; and much more. Here, at last, is the definitive edition of a classic of world literature.

The most timeless classic ever written. I first read Catch 22 in 1963, while a freshman in High School. I was hooked on the first page. It became my favorite novel and has remains so, some 48 years later. On it's own, it is a wonderfully entertaining story, filled with some of the most memorable characters to ever grace the printed page. For pure fun, I have returned to it many times over the years and been rewarded by discovering something new each time. It's most unique value for me however, has been it's continued relevance to the real world. Having spent over 35 years in government service, it was a rare time when I could not relate two or three of my co-workers to characters in the book. Col. Cathcart, Major Major Major, and Appleby are just a few of the examples that come to mind. If you doubt me, you haven't read the book enough times. Still not convinced? How about Chief Wild Halfoat? Any doubt the oil companies would still be following him? And finally, Milo Minderbinder. Who could not see the parallels between his philosophy and that of Dick Cheney. Why should you care if your son or daughter dies in a war, as long as you own part of the company. Now, is that Milo talking or our past VP? Read this book and you decide.

Price. This is a great book that I am almost done with but thought it would be nice to have it on a digital version, however, this price is way beyond what it should be and I won't waste my money on it

TRUE CLASSIC. A cannot miss read, a true classic. It has it all.

Meh. Poor character development. Poor plot. The last time it took me this long to read a book was “Moby Dick”. I had to force myself to finish it. The subversion and criticism of authority figures was the best part.

Price. Get it in print

There was only one catch.... Catch-22 had totally confused me at first, so with the first 50 pages in u won't get it until near the end, so stick with this book it you're struggling, I promise it'll make sense soon enough!! This is one of the most powerful novel I've ever read. It gives u mixed emotions throughout and gets u laughing away with totally ridiculous but funny stories in each chapter. Other then the laughs, there are some parts that although are ridiculous, it really gets u thinking of the impact Of WW2 and all it's devastation. It is one of the most saddest, funniest, and greatest books I've ever read. Read it, and you'll get the full story! Careful, though. There's a catch...

Catch 22. This the saddest funny - or funniest sad - book I've ever read. I'll never be finished with it. There are lessons in it for everyone. On a completely different and extremely puzzling subject: Why does Christopher Buckley's name appear linked with Joseph Heller's as if he co-authored this book? And why are the last pages of Catch 22 followed by: More Books By Christopher Buckley?

Evil pricing. Great novel evil pricing

Read on Kindle. Outstanding American classic, cultural relevance still stands to this very day.

Great book, awful price.. Catch-22 is a book I've paid for at least three times, and never paid more than $5-$6, cheaper when used. $13? You're kidding, right?

Whew, very expensive. Terrific book.. A true three-fisted humdinger of a book. Why can't the digital version be more affordable? Guess I'll need to lug my tattered paperback around, or hit up Alibris.

Outstanding piece of American Lit but,. the price on the ebook is way to high. If it has special features like interviews with Heller or something like that, then the price tag may be justified. Otherwise save your money and support your local library.

great book...overpriced.. i just had to post about the price of this classic novel. give us a freaking break, apple. find this book at a used book store for a dollar and get to reading!

Want to give it 1star to send message to publisher but I just can't, book's simply too good. Simon and Schuster - shame on you. Charge more for an electronic version than for even the hard copy. And, most of the people buying the electronic version have already purchased either a hard copy or paperback so you profit twice. We to send a message to greedy and corrupt publishers. It isn't only Wall Street that has the greed disease.

WAY TOO EXPENSIVE!!!!. Shame, Shame, shame

Satire at its best!. This is one of my all-time favorite novels. I read it back in high school and ended up using it as source material in a college research paper on Vietnam War sentiment and literature, and yet I still go back to re-read this every five years or so (I don't re-read many books). Entertaining, a little disturbing at times, and very memorable.

Beautifully insane. This book mixes horror and humor into a book of great purpose and feeling.

$13?. Why the hell do you have to make this book $13 it doesn’t cost you anything.

High School Students Perspective (2011). My my. This truly is a timeless novel as the same ideas and themes displayed in this story are still prevalent today. It really amazes me and shows how people, despite all the "progress" that we have made, haven't truly gotten all that far. To be honest, I didn't expect too much from this book. But the satire throughout this book really nailed it to the point that any reader should be able to see it immediately. Examples being.. The syndicate. Corporations these days are all doing all they can to please the shareholders (in this case Milo), but the same concept occurs. But what I was truly touched upon was by the atrocities of war. People who make fun of war may think it's all fun and games, but the death of Snowden really brings out the horrifying aspect of death. We all too often brush aside the aspect of war, thinking it's only a "war". Too many of us (A.P. students who only strive to do well academically) don't have the right to give an explicit opinion about war until you have been in the shoes of Yosharrian or the others. I'm not arguing for any war in itself, but war in itself, like the author clearly emphasizes, is often an unnecessary and extravagant means in order to get things done. It's mighty easy to get a war going; it's much harder to actually fight it and be able to justify it. This book also emphasizes the delicacy of life itself; we often fail to realize that death happens to be around the corner. I don't want to give too many details about this book away, so just read it! Bottom line: Classic.

Must read, but ridiculous price. Favorite book all time but this is absurd

One of the two books I've ever read twice.... However, like other reviewers, would never pay more than $12 for the digital edition...

Horrible. I hate this book.

Catch 22. A bit pricey, don’t you think?
