A Night Action alert calls James Bond away from dinner with a beautiful woman. Headquarters has decrypted an electronic whisper—plans for a devastating attack:

Casualties estimated in the thousands, British interests adversely affected.

James Bond, in his early thirties and already a veteran of the Afghan War, has been recruited to a new organization. Conceived in the post-9/11 world, it operates independent of MI5, MI6, and the Ministry of Defense, its very existence deniable. Its aim: to protect the Realm, by any means necessary.

Great book!. I was captivated by this book! i did not want to stop reading it. Well written, true to the nature and style of the fictional character it portrays. A very good read!

What a Travesty. Everything about this novel is the palest of imitations. James Bond would never have developed into the icon of ruthless cool if Deaver had a hand in his creation. Can't think of a redeeming quality; poor characterization, poor plot development, and mediocre writing. Avoid.

Loved it!. Excellent book. Respectful of Ian Fleming's original creation but up to date and very entertaining. Exciting story!

Great new look at bond!. This novel, while not the same as the Ian Fleming story, offers a fresh, 21st Century reinvention of James Bond. It's current day look at the world of covert espionage makes for a riveting story from beginning to end. I liked it!

Carte Blache. One of the best Bond books ever written.

Carte Blanche. This is by far the best non-Ian Fleming James Bond book, ever. I had my doubts when I read how Mr. Deaver was going to modernize Bond, but he pulled it off. A really good read and I look for his next Bond effort.

James Bond lives!. Well, to be candid, I was skeptical. James Bond written by someone other than his mentor (creator) Ian Fleming? Mr. Fleming's Estate/Heirs OK'd the work so I thought it was worth a try. I would have preferred James Bond to still be consistent with his age and era from the Fleming novels; possibly now the new "M" venturing into the field on occassion like Alexander Waverly in the The Man From Uncle; and his nephew fulfilling most of the field assignment roles throughout the modern world. However, this was a fine effort, well researched and quite literally fun to read, so I gave it Five Stars and I would recommend it to those who enjoy an espionage mystery less mundane and cerebral than some novels, but hardly an oversimplified comic book either. I believe the right balance was achieved here.

I would have read it anyway. The last 1/8 of the book was quite predictable, the first 7/8 brought back memories of early Bond.

Excellent. Although no one will write as good a Bond novel as Ian Fleming, this novel comes darn close. I would strongly recommend any lover of James Bond adventures read this excellent tale. I hope he writes others!

Good Bond; boring villain(s). I really like the James Bond in Carte Blanche, but the enemies are so forgettable, non-formidable, and by previous Bond-baddies standards, petty. No world domination here... I really think they could have sent just the police, rather than a 00 agent, to finish the job. Bond himself is well developed and updated for the modern world, as are his gadgets (mostly apps on his iPhone). I enjoyed reading about the young Bond and the death of his parents. I just wish the villains seemed more villainous.

Great book.. I had read only the Fleming Bond; none of the posthumous writers. I was not sure what to expect here. What a pleasant surprise. This book is like what Hollywood would call a re- imagining of the Bond story. Set in modern times Deaver brings enough of Flemings touches to bear, but makes Bond a contemporary character. I loved it, and I hope Mr. Deaver is retained to write more. Fans should get this book.

Carte Blanche. James Bond is put to work to fight waste management - well it's a little more sophisticated than that but not much more Bond has always fought megalomaniac psychotics, this one wants to control the world's waste. Given what's going on in the world, I would have liked to see Bond take down at least one of our more obvious threats - Chinese trade domination, Iranian nuclear development, North Korean's desperate efforts to prove communism is best, Somalian piracy, Cuba's efforts in leadership mortality, radical Muslim fundamentalism. The book has all the constituent parts of the Bond formula, and continues the gritty approach rather than the witty approach. There's just not the humor in world domination that there used to be - or am I just thinking Austin Powers. It's hard not to read Bond without thinking about how the movie treatment will be. This is one for Daniel Craig - playing up the Afrikaner role that his cover demands as the plot moves from London to South Africa via the opener in ....... Insert any Central European country here. We are treated to a good share of female foils - both romantic or not, or may be's. All felt believable, but one of them turned out a bit soppy. Not in the league of Fleming, but not bad.

Yawn ... More commercials than action, more talking than action, and no tension or interested in suspense.

Carte Blanche. This 007 book keeps you interested until the last page.Vintage James Bond, you'll be wondering who the culprits are until the end. Enjoy!!

Awesome!. Fun and entertaining read. This is my first bond book I have read and I enjoyed it. It's not a literary achievement but sometimes it's good to read one of these books. It had some great villains, great girls, drinks and fast cars. What more can you ask for? I hope Mr. Deaver will right a follow up to this as I would purchase it.

Great read. The Bond nuances of his preferred drink and his Omega watch were changed which was a bummer to a fan. He did however have the E type jaguar and the Walter PPK S which were good enough for me. Really enjoyed this book and will certainly read more Bond books from Deaver!!

Amazing. Unapologetic 007

Not 2 Good. it just wasnt 007

Not James Bond. Good read, but not James Bond.

Better than I ever hoped!. This is in my opinion the best Bond book since Fleming died. Actually better than a couple of his more half-hearted entries.....did I say that? Who can resist Bond operating primarily with his iQPhone!!!!

I've read worsen. See title

Expertly written. Mr. Deaver has pulled off what I would catagorize as a seemingly impossible bond-like feat. You can immediately tell from chapter one that this author has a passion for the literary works of Fleming. He is true to the original concept of bond and incorporates all the characteristics of 007 we know and love. He has managed to bring Bond into the present era and done a fine job. He shares Flemings love for the description and always lets us know what is going on is Bond's mind. This book is a masterpiece that Fleming himself would have enjoyed very much.

A classic Bond tale.. Exciting and hard to put down.

007 Refresh!. Glad to have new books on 007!

I liked it. This was a good read. But not really James Bond novel.

Good stuff. Very fun read. Smart. Easy to get into and feels like a movie. Read it! Nice new Bond idea.

Carte Blanche. Love Bond, love Deaver, but this writing is not near JD's quality

Jeffrey can do much better. Far too much digression to wines, food and bling as oppose to the plot. Audiences are more attune to the dynamics and strength of the story and characters nowadays than the name dropping cliches of 50 years ago

Carte Blanche. Once again, Deaver does not disappoint. A very enjoyable Bond adventure in the true Ian Fleming tradition of excitement, intrigue and savoir faire, but with a special Deaver penchant for the near-macabre. A very good read.

Great to have Bond back!. Love Bond and love Deaver. A good reboot, satisfying, and painting a clear foundation of who Bond is and what drives him. Hopefully the beginning of many more to come!

007 is back!. I really enjoyed reading this new James bond book! The author has kept the essence of james. I liked one q branch had an indian working there and how the majority of the story was set in South Africa as it is a truly beautiful country. I liked how James character showed some feeling and how he felt. I really hope they can adapt this book into a movie! It's a good buy and well worth a read, real good page turner that keeps you in grossed in the book! Can't wait for the next one!

First Bond book. I love Bond movies but this was my first book - quite interesting how many details you get on Bond that don't come out in the movies. There were some slow times, but overall i really enjoyed it and can't wait to compare it to the next movie.

Double 00 Dud. This book was ok at best. The ending was so disjointed from anything that led up to it that it was completely unbelievable. Deaver had some big shoes to fill but fell far short of the mark. James Bond, the ultimate protagonist, didn't hold a candle to Stephen Hunter's Lee Swagger, Daniel Silva's Gabriel Alon, or Berensen's John Wells. The plot twists were completely unbelievable and reminiscent of something that may have impressed 50 years ago. Readers are far more sophisticated and need something at least within the realm of reason in today's spy novel. The use of British idiom was distracting. Again, it sounded like something out of the '50s. Seaver just didn't cut it. It's really a shame but Deaver was to Ian Fleming as Timothy Dalton was to Sean Conner

A passable read, but …. In this novel, James Bond drives a Subaru. With a spoiler.

Carte Blanche. Very good book with traditionally excellent Deaver plotting and character development. It surprised me Deaver took on the job. On the downside, Deaver's adaptation was too long (Fleming's Bond books were so much shorter and artfully crafted). I would have given him three stars but added a fourth because his effort was better than other posthumous attempts)

Carte Blanche. Deaver never fails to deliver. Very true to a Bond story although I’ve never read Fleming. Great & very interesting characters.

This is not Bond!. Pretty much all the history of James Bond is thrown in the trash can by the author. The author is reimagining James Bond from scratch. Why the Fleming estate permitted this book to be published as part of the James Bond series is beyond me. Most people who have read the Fleming/Gardner/Benson/Amis/Faulk novels will tell you they hate this novel and is not James Bond. There is a reason why Deaver only wrote one Bond novel. And it is not because what he wrote was great.

A great read. Not flemming but as close as you can get!!

Carte Blanche. Just finished the well written 007 offering by Deaver. With tough shoes to fill he delivers what the franchise is meant to do: action, exotic and fascinating locals, sophisticated foes, and of course beautiful women. If Fleming was Sean Connery consider Deaver akin to Moore or Craig. We look forward to a second act.

Bond at his best. This is an excellent novel and in many respects exceeds Ian Flemings Bond. Deaver has captured the quintessential JB. A great read.

Carte Blanch. I can't even finish this book. This is the worst 007 book I have ever read. I read 2 James Patterson "Private" books while trying to get through this. 30 pages to go - ugh.

Not Ian Fleming but his equal at best!. Truelson a great read especially for Bond fans. Suspenseful and very entertaining. Enjoy!

not engaging. Somehow this book fails to engage me. The text is too distant, and there are too many needless facts. If someone flares up like a landmine, what do we care whether it was an MK-80 landmine (or whatever it was). Reminds me of a cheap novel hero who at some point declared "I wish I would sink a hundred miles into the ground" -presumably out of shame of some sort. The translator had put in an footnote: "That would be English miles", as if that made the least bit of difference. Also, I am getting tired of Deaver's plot device of the hero being hopelessly caught by the baddie, only to escape by some ten-minute-earlier insight which is hidden from the reader. This is more and more common in his books, Bond or the quadriplegic superman. Too predictable. All in all, I finished this book only because i had a cold, and was bedridden. I wll admit that reading an eBook isnever as gripping for me as the real thing, maybe this has an effect here.

Spanking good fun. Deaver does it; Bond rides again!

Fun!. Waiting for another

Excellent book!. Such a good book. Definitely worth every peeny.

Simply... Amazing. This book is astounding! With references to the Young Bond series and modern cars and TV shows, the book makes you feel like Bond has come into the 21st century. This book is action packed and completely plausible. You can actually believe that tis could indeed happen. Great book!! I've never read a book more interesting and fun than this. Excellent!

Bond is back. Fast paced, well written and pleasantly entertaining. A few small changes to the Bond details make this book an interesting read. What more could you ask for, villains, plot twists, and several Bond girls. Awesome!
