Bleak House by Charles Dickens Book Summary

Considered one of Charles Dickens’ greatest novels, Bleak House is at once a complex character study and a scathing indictment of the British legal system. Dickens employs a unique narrative structure, alternating between a near-omniscient third-person narrator to, in some chapters, the first-person perspective of one of his characters: Esther Summerson. Esther, along with the rest of Bleak House’s extensive cast of characters, find their lives in constant flux due to the seemingly endless property litigation of Jarndyce and Jarndyce, a case representing all the damage done by the court’s strict adherence to unimportant procedure.

Bleak House (Charles Dickens) Book Reviews

Bleak houseThis book is one of the best I have ever read, I have read it twice and decided to go for three. Really long, the people come alive as you read they seem to dance before your eyes as you read..Score: 5/5

Excellent, but very, very long!Wow! This is one long book! Dickens minces no words here. He seems to relish in writing every little word his characters say. Still, it is an interesting story. There is no raging suspense, no super action. It is just a pleasant book. Sort of like a modern movie that just sort of rolls along, and I'm not talking of action movies, or comedies, or even love stories if today…they all have more action than this book! I suppose in Dickens day, the days before television and radio, it might be nice to have a book that you could read over a long period for extended entertainment. Okay, that's it for the literary review. Now for this digital copy…it is actually pretty good, one if the better digital books of an old classic; but it is not perfect. There are a few errors in the text—numerous occasions of "he" for "be" and "be" for "he" for instance. And a chapter title that is mis-numbered. These would be caught if someone had read the digitized book before publishing it. But it has to be read cover-to-cover to catch these..Score: 5/5

A Dickens masterpieceHaving read all of Dickens novels, I am of the opinion that Bleak House is his finest work. When one considers the magnitude and magnificence of his writings, that is, as the trite phrase goes, "saying something". I have often thought characterization was Dickens strongest suit, and that is borne out in BH. Jo, Mr. Bucket, Mr. George, Esther - they all are brilliantly developed. Another takeaway from BH is how deeply Dickens loathed British law. Both the institution, the Chancery, and its lawyers such as Tulkinghorn, Guppy and Vholes are portrayed in a very poor light. This is likely from the real life difficulties Dickens' father had with the law when Dickens was a youngster. The BH train is slow the pick up speed, but about a third of the way in, the train has become a speeding locomotive, resulting in a riveting page turner. A must read for anyone who enjoys the classics. Five stars..Score: 5/5
