The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin Book Summary

Mara Dyer doesn’t know if she is crazy or haunted—all she knows is that everyone around her is dying in this suspenseful and “strong, inventive tale” (Kirkus Reviews).

Mara Dyer doesn’t think life can get any stranger than waking up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there.
It can.
She believes there must be more to the accident she can’t remember that killed her friends and left her mysteriously unharmed.
There is.
She doesn’t believe that after everything she’s been through, she can fall in love.
She’s wrong.

After Mara survives the traumatizing accident at the old asylum, it makes sense that she has issues. She lost her best friend, her boyfriend, and her boyfriend’s sister, and as if that weren’t enough to cope with, her family moves to a new state in order to give her a fresh start. But that fresh start is quickly filled with hallucinations—or are they premonitions?—and then corpses, and the boundary between reality and nightmare is wavering. At school, there’s Noah, a devastatingly handsome charmer who seems determined to help Mara piece together what’s real, what’s imagined—and what’s very, very dangerous.

This fast-paced psychological—or is it paranormal?—thriller will leave you breathless for its sequel, The Evolution of Mara Dyer.

Strange. Wow this book was so weird. In a good way. There were so many plot holes and random things involved that made you constantly guess. The pacing was slow, and the characters are so moody you just feel intense the whole time. The writing was really nice and easy to follow and I really liked the darkness of the story. The only issue I had was the characters. That they were very frustrating in the way they interact with people around them, but I do like the dialogue, though at times it was way too cheesy.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4.5. You know i really didn’t think i was gonna enjoy this book but this is probably one of my top fav suspense books. It really depends on the book for me to find a likeable fmc but Mara is such a relatable character and you can sympathize for her as well. AND NOAH HAD ME KICKING MY FEET IN THE AIR probably one of the only books that made me laugh out loud like please it was so funny😭 Although the beginning was slow and i was kinda confused at the end i highly recommend you read it! i loved this book so much❤️

Loved it. It's one of those books that pulls you in and you can't stop reading. I've only gotten through the first 2 but I can't wait to read the third one. It's going be upsetting finishing the third book because I live the trilogy so much and I am so anxious to finish it. It's my current obsession on tumblr tags and I can't get enough I absolutely love the story line, it's unlike any other book I have read; it's not just a cliche teenage romance love story, it's twisted and different and I love that.

The best!. I bought this book when it was on sale for 1.99 thinking this looks interesting enough and it's cheap. Little did I know that I wouldn't be able to put it down. This book is so original there is no other books that I've read like it. Very well written and the characters are very developed, they feel like real people. And the book is written to the point that as I was reading it I can visualize it like a movie. I would deff recommend to everyone, buy this book it's amazing. Reading book two currently 😁

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer. I had high hopes for this book, but the author rambled and left the characters weakly developed and seemed to be spinning her wheels at times. Mara Dyer, the central character is clearly some form of Mara, the Hindi demon/goddess of death(the reader is reminded often that Mara is part Indian) and yet the author never explains how or why she has taken on this form. Mara's love interest Noah, comes out of left field with his "powers" and in a trite and typical romantic turn is impossibly rich and gorgeous. Every other character is undeveloped by the author and just fodder for Mara to freak out about or get in her way. I will admit that the novel began with some truly chilling moments, but this pace and promise was not sustained. After just a few chapters the book began to stumble along without creating a believable world or an interesting plot. The author had a very limited vocabulary and this sucked the life out of various moments in the book making them read as the same tone. If there was a scene where she wanted to describe something beautiful, the author said it was "limned" by light or whatever. I won't be reading the next book. The other point that I should mention, is that the category that this novel is listed under on my iPad is Children's Fiction, but I would not recommend it for kids under 16. The expletives are a bit over the top for kids. Mara is described by Noah as having a "filthy mouth", the author manages to develop that aspect of her character. The end leaves many questions unanswered, but there is not enough in the plot or the characters to make the reader care. A disappointment.

Wow!!. This was such an amazing book. It was one of those physiological thriller movies that I love. Amazing. Mara was a smart, sarcastic, witted character. I foud myself yelling at her at some points towards the end for her... Well, just read and you'll understand. Haha. And Noah...... *Blush* I love him.

Good. At some points the book was a bit confusing but overall a good read!

Amazing. Fantastic book- also the relationship between Mara and Noah does NOT give the kissing booth feel. Idk why that person wrote that. It is the complete opposite lol. The romance is real and raw. It’s amazing. Just because they both are named Noah doesn’t mean they are the same book/vibe. Do read it!!

Un-describable.. This book is beyond anything I have ever read. I used to think the Kissed By An Angel series was amazing. This? I can't even find the words to say how much I freaking loved this. You absolutely fall in love with Mara, and Noah as individuals and then as a couple. You actually WANT Noah to go to your school, to be your boyfriend. You WANT to be Mara. Somehow, even though her life is really bizarre, you can relate to some of her issues. I'm not kidding, as soon as I finished this book, I practically cried because i finished the book. I rushed to make my dad order me the second(The Evolution Of Mara Dyer). I could not WAIT for it to come. And when it did, I nearly screamed I was so excited. And I finished the second one in less than a week. I almost cried when I finished that too. I really hope she is writing the third and had that out soon because I'm seriously anxious to read it. I want to personally contact Michelle to thank her for her creativity and to ask her about the third book. If you're smart, and enjoy books, GET THIS. You will NOT be disappointed.

The unbecoming of Mara dyer. I loved this book!!!!!!!!!!!!! You should write a second one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer. I loved the book right from the beginning. I could not put it down. But as I read I could not believe that this was in the teen section of the library. I would be very hesitant to let my teenager read this book. And I hate the ending. Is there to be a sequel?

I have no words.. The book speaks for itself.

Great series. I loved all three of these books. I don't typically leave reviews, but I felt justified in leaving one for this series, as there were things I noticeably liked and disliked about it. **SPOILERS AHEAD FOR ALL THREE BOOKS** The cons are few. Mostly, I didn't like that there was very little break in the intensity of Mara's story. As a reader, sometimes you just need a breather - some fluffy stuff. And in Mara's story, there is very little fluff or time for the reader to relax and smile. It was very intense, and I felt like I needed a break from it at times because of said intensity. Some more lovey dovey moments between Mara and Noah would've been excellent for this. There were also some pretty apparent moments that were likely meant to be discreet, but were phrased in ways that made some plot points quite obvious. Daniel's missing key, for one, or the rug in Kells's office. Perhaps I was too perceptive, but I don't often think of myself as such, which means that if I picked up on it, other readers likely did too. It was also hard to keep up with the connections of people as we learned more about Mara's history, and it would've been cool to learn more about the abilities themselves (Jamie's, Stella's, etc). That's all I've got for the cons. The series was incredible. It kept me on the edge of my seat and staying up until the early hours of the morning because I couldn't put it down. It thrills me knowing we get to learn about Noah and Mara after the New York incident, and their story truly is thrilling. It tied together beautifully, and I loved the description of the different cities and the wit of the characters. They're sharp, smart-mouthed and funny. I can't wait to reread them and read The Shaw Confessions in 2016!

The Best Bok Ever Written. Ok this book changed my life. I reread it every moment I get the chance to. I first found it when it first came out, and have been a fan ever since. To all those questioning, there is a seqeul, The Evolution of Mara Dyer, and a third book coming out in November, 2014 called, The Retribution of Mara Dyer. The best part of the book is the fact the the author writes just like a teenager. This isn’t a book where it doesn’t sound authentic. Michelle understands a teenager’s attitude perfectly, and all the sacastic remarks are spot on. I’ve made all my friends read this, and they are hooked. Mara Amitra Dyer, and Noah Elliot Simon Shaw are my life. I always make references, and the book consumes me. Ok, don’t think I’m that crazy, I just really love this book. I’m part of the fandom, and stalk every fan account I find. This must be a movie, and if not, I’ll probably rip my hair out. I won’t give away spoilers, but JUST READ THE BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!! I live in a world of madness, and if you are part of fandom, you’ll understand why I keep using the term Madness. I would recomend this to people over the age of, at the very least, 12. I read it in fifth grade, I was 11, and thought that I probably shouldn’t be reading this until I was a little older, but I did anyway. Michelle sucked me in. You really should read this series, I swear, you will not regret it.

READ THIS BOOK!!!. okay so when I first started this book I was debating on continuing to read it or not. It was kinda slow and the whole vibe between Mara and Noah was giving me “The Kissing Booth” flashbacks which I did NOT enjoy. However, this book was so freaking good. Loved the romance, loved the ENDING!!! Like bbg are you series. Not gonna spoil anything but AHHHH!!! If you’re debating on whether or not to read, I promise it’s worth it. I read it in one sitting:)

Loved it!. Im thrilled to read the second book! Is there a movie?! Id love to watch it

BEST BOOK!!!!. BEST BOOK IVE EVER READ!!! This book changed the way I looked at books.Im now a book geek. I love this book and love Noah.there is no doubt that u will not fall in love with Noah

Amazing. Truly amazing! Sexy, funny, etc. ah, just utterly AMAZING!!! And Noah.....*fan girl squeal* Noah

Fantastic!. This book kept me on the edge of my seat, the story never sat still. One of the best books I've read this summer.

Great Book!. I didn't buy this book on iTunes, but read it in school. The book is so good!! You fall in love with Noah, and relate to Mara even though you've never been in her situation. If you are looking for a great book, this is an AMAZING book. Do get, you won't regret.

Absolutely loved it.. I enjoyed reading this amazing book from the first page. I was captivated by the first few words and captivated by the last. I read this, evolution, and retribution in two days. Now that's a book you don't wanna put down! The author's fantastic words blew my away and every chapter I wanted to read even more. Love love loved it.

BEST BOOK EVER. This book captivated me since the first couple of pages and has kept me waiting and waiting for more. I'd definitely recommend this book to any teen. It is an amazing read

My favorite!. I love this book so much. Noah is by far the best fictional character created and Mara, don't get me started on Mara. This book is only the beginning to such a beautiful story even with the crazy and twisted side it's too good. I recommend this for the people who are into the romance but also that dark twisted side. Love this book and the other two!!

Is there a sequel coming?. The ending was rather unresolved. I was left with a lot of questions which is an excellent set up for a sequel. Thought this was well written and fast read but im left scratching my head

A MUST READ. The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer is captivating and will have you guessing all the way through. I couldn't put it down!! It is an amazing read that I would recommend to anyone. Would be incredible to see it go to theaters!!!
