Horus Rising by Dan Abnett Book Summary

What can be said about Horus Rising that hasn’t been said before? The Horus Heresy was a brand new venture, and had it not been for Dan’s masterful portrayal of the Warmaster as a force for good, the series might not have taken off in the way did.

The Story
At the dawn of the 31st millennium, the Imperium of Man has reasserted its dominance over the galaxy. It is a golden age of rediscovery and conquest, and the Emperor’s Great Crusade has placed his superhuman primarch sons at the head of the mighty Space Marine Legions – the most powerful military force ever assembled. Newly promoted to serve as the Emperor’s Warmaster, the idealistic Horus now stands above his brothers, even as the Crusade enters what must surely be its final stages and dark, cosmic truths begin to reveal themselves. Far beyond the alien threat of malignant xenos breeds or rogue human civilisations, a war now looms that could threaten the final extinction of mankind... The first novel in the epic series, detailing the fall of mankind at the peak of the Great Crusade. Warmaster Horus leads his Legion in the name of the Emperor... but for how long?

Heresy. This book was my first expedition into the 40k books pre heresy and it was great. I love the way that the war master and his primarchs are each very distinguished well thought through developed characters. I can't wait to start on the next one

Phenomenal Start to the Heresy Series. Amazing book. Was captivated start to finish. I loved getting to know the characters and was sad when I had to close the book.

Amazing. Dan is amazing as are all of his books.

Amazing!!!!!!. It's just amazing!!!!

Great story, outrageous price. Don't get me wrong, Horus Rising is probably one of my all time favorite reads. I will probably read the cover right off my paperback edition of his awesome tale. However, Black Library's continued ramping up the prices for all their books is getting too painful to ignore. Reprinting short stories from anthologies as stand alone hard cover books. The reprinting and repricing of the original paperbacks at $16 it's just too much. I'd rather just get a replacement from Amazon or a brick and mortar store worst case. Buyer beware when buying new horus heresy novels. Double check the page count. You may be buying less than 150 pages of book for 14$

WTH?. Don't buy...price recently doubled over original price with nothing new...just Black Library price gouging its customers....

40k Perfect. This is, by far, one of the best sci-fi novels I have read to date. As a fan of the 40k universe, TT and rts, it is nice to read about the stories and see them done well.

It begins!. True to an Abnett novel, you will be rooted to the words. This novel gives an in-depth, controversial look to the Astartes loyalty that will forever stick in your mind.

Luprical !. From a person just getting their taste of the warhammer universe, this book was amazing start to finish. I highly recommend it to anyone that enjoys fiction.

GREAT. Well written, I only caught two typos. Engaging story.

Great book...don't buy. Don't buy....Price gouging galore....an ebook should never be more than a print edition.Never... Come on now (Games Workshop/Black library) give up the margin... or at least sell a bundle pack on iTunes...for the price of a print edition $7.99 not $15.99...you greedy idiots!!!!

They literally doubled the prices for all in the series... They cost 7.99. Just buy the physical copy

Personality. This book is terrific. Dramatic, powerful, and engrossing. It really gives the 30th milenia personality. $16 is a bit steep though.

Not poor fan fiction. It was with great trepidation that I downloaded and started reading Horus Rising by Dan Abnett. It is in very rare cases that I read licensed properties. All too often these books are cash grabs, with weak plots, poor characters, and just plain bad! This is not the case with Horus Rising. This book is the first book in a very long series that (spoilers!) tell the story of Horus's fall from being the Imperium's greatest hero to becoming the person that almost destroys the empire. Mr. Abnett has an excellent grasp on the 40K universe and crafts an excellent story displaying the glory of the Adeptus Astartes. He lays the space marines out as an unstoppable force for good, but subtly and carefully shows their cracks and weaknesses. The reader is discovering the full dangers of the 40K universe along with the main characters. This makes for interesting reveals, good suspense and an exciting book. It is not all bolter fire, spinning chain swords and unending fight scenes. This is solid gothic science fiction written by someone who has as much affection for the subject matter as his audience. I'm in the for next 18 books!

Save money, buy the hardcopy.. Don’t get me wrong, I love Dan Abnett and I love this series. I own the whole series at home and like most people, I am starting to slowly transition a lot of what I have to digital copies so I can take my library with me. But double the cost of a physical copy? I don’t think so. The whole point of a digital copy is it’s supposed to be less costly on both the customer and the retailers side. This is blatent price gouging. If you you’re looking for a good copy of the book and want the best bang for your buck, check out some good used copies on Amazon or Powell’s. $5 a copy vs $16. Do the math.

Beginnings. I've been read Dan's inquisitor and Ghost series but wanted to see how the Imperium came to know the powers of Chaos. What a great way to start the saga that defines the 40k omniverse. There's just enough in this first novel to whet the appetite; just enough that you have to jump straight into the next one immediately. Even knowing what will eventually take place, I can't help but be wrapped up in the 'how' of it all. The Warmaster is kind, noble, merciful, and to be perfectly honest...lovable. He's the perfect son, the Emperor's chosen. How did he become twisted with such counsel as the Mournival? What is it that finally persuades him to take up arms against his father? How can he fall from such lofty heights? Thanks, Dan, I'm hooked.

Bravo.. Incredible, well written. Inspiring. If you like this, check out Gaunts Ghosts and Eisenhorn.

Rating of ebook not novel. The story is great and the universe is better. In this case, the value simply isn't there for the price they're asking. The price hike seems to be a way to standardize sales from Black Library. It's terribly disappointing and not at all in line with the market.

Awsome!. I have this in paperback as well, it's the first in, what is a 15 book series with lots more to come, very good read and made up it's here!!

Amazing. Great book, iv read up to book 6 of the series so far. (One after the other). I have not been able to put them down, but for me this has still been the best so far. I have not been interested in reading black library before, but this series is great. Fast plot, exciting, edge of your seat as the plot thickens and changes.

Really enjoyed!. Just starting to get into the 40K books and thought this was a great place to start!

Make a audio book version!!. Make a audio book version!!

Addicted. I myself am a total Heresy addict, and to get something free as well from GW is insanely good. Thanks GW.

Surprisingly well written. I guess most people reading these are in for the story and plot rather than great literary displays - having read some of the other authors in the series the ideas far outweigh the execution, but Dan Abnett is a fair bit better than the others I've read so far. He does get a bit bogged down with over describing some of the battles but mostly he keeps it to character and suggestion - whereas some of his other heresy series authors indulge in a lot of both show and tell and amateur fantasy fandom. I'll read all of them for the story completeness but I'll probably only find myself rereading the Abnett books for actually treating the audience like grown ups rather than gaming detail nerds.

Horus heresy. Great book and this comes from someone who isn’t a big reader. I’ve just started to get into warhammer lore and got this recommended to me and absolutely loved it deffo worth a purchase

Surprising. I was looking for a good space marine book and this was actually loads of fun, horus is a gripping tale indeed :)

Amazing. You’ll not put it down!

Grate first book. Grate first book in what is an amazing series of books

Great!. Everything that I wanted the book to be when looking for a sci-fi fantasy series to get stuck into. I’m not a WH40K player but love the depth and range of the universe and that there’s always more to discover. This book was a brilliant introduction.

Superb. Abnett is a superb author and this is a fitting beginning to the saga of the Horus Heresy. His capacity for populating a universe set in the future with inspired characters and such a vivid environment is endlessly engaging. There is an ominous shadow of dramatic irony hanging over the book for those familiar with the Warhammer universe and this makes it all the more delicious. For those who are not so versed in the lore (and the model soldiers associated with it) it would probably be a different prospect. I can heartily recommend a lot of Mr Abnetts other books, particularly the Inquistor ones. This book only gets four stars as those were so good that he has set the bar exceptionally high.

Must Read!. This book is quite simly, amazing. Dan lavishly details the galaxy and setting, giving infinite desricption to the places, people and events in the time of Horus's darkest hour. This book is a must read for 40k fans every where!

Great intro. This book was my introduction to the Warhammer 40k universe beyond the PC & Console games, it was awesome & haven't read anything else but Horus Heresy novels since. If you're wondering where to start in all the 40K books this is it!

Epic beginnings. Epic start to the Horus heresy. However I did feel the authors writing was disjointed and slightly confusing at times - I also feel he switches too often between first and surname which further served to confuse matters - however, the book was still amazing and I couldn't put it down - bravo

Amazing. One of the best books I've ever read. I couldn't put it down until it was finished!

Awesome read. Excited to read more of the series!

Meh...Came out of when of time.... To this...and it was marginal at best. The must be some good ones...there’s a massive fans base for 40K...but this wasn’t a good representation of of it.
