Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford Book Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “An impressive, bitter, and sweet debut that explores the age-old conflicts between father and son, the beauty and sadness of what happened to Japanese Americans in the Seattle era during World War II, and the depths and longing of deep-heart love.”—Lisa See

“A tender and satisfying novel.”—Garth Stein, bestselling author of The Art of Racing in the Rain

In 1986, Henry Lee joins a crowd outside the Panama Hotel, once the gateway to Seattle’s Japantown. It has been boarded up for decades, but now the new owner has discovered the belongings of Japanese families who were sent to internment camps during World War II. As the owner displays and unfurls a Japanese parasol, Henry, a Chinese American, remembers a young Japanese American girl from his childhood in the 1940s—Keiko Okabe, with whom he forged a bond of friendship and innocent love that transcended the prejudices of their Old World ancestors. After Keiko and her family were evacuated to the internment camps, she and Henry could only hope that their promise to each other would be kept. Now, forty years later, Henry explores the hotel’s basement for the Okabe family’s belongings and for a long-lost object whose value he cannot even begin to measure. His search will take him on a journey to revisit the sacrifices he has made for family, for love, for country.

A must read!!. Possibly one of the best historical fiction books I have read! A great dual narrative highlighting the social issues post during Wold War II and the 2nd Sino-Japanese War, while also introducing the developing relationship of a forbidden friendship/love

A different time and place. I thoroughly enjoyed this book! A tale of unexpected friendships, love and loss that should be read with a perspective of the time and place in which it was set. Some reviews jump on the improbability of love at such a young age. But, the reader must keep in mind that teenagers 60-70 years ago were different from today's, especially during the war years. They were expected to grow up and help the family When these two young people, ostracized for being different, not seen as real Americans, finally form a friendship, their bond is tight. I could definitely see love forming from that.

A good book. My teacher told me to read it for whole quarter and i start to like it

A little bit disappointed.. I liked the book very much, but found that it didn't live up to the expectations of others who reviewed the book. I found it to be a slow read because in many places it was redundant. I constantly was waiting for the action to move faster. The emotions of the characters were explicitly written, but I did not feel them because the action of the story often did not have enough of a build up to justify the words used. Maybe I was too hyped by the feelings of others to enjoy the book on my own.

Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. Coming of age love story set against the backdrop of WWII in America.

A good, but very quick read. I am a very fast reader and this book was the easiest one of them all. I liked it. But it did not have that much historical significance to it...it had a teaspoon of some historical events. But the plot twists are okay. It's a plain book. It's not that romantic. I honestly don't know what else to say to help people on their views on this book. It was good.

hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. History as people. Beautifully written, with characters who are real, strong and affecting. Great story

Good job!. Jamie Ford does a good job of conveying emotional impact of various issues on each of the characters from each character's unique perspective. He he does this in a very nonjudgemental way. It's a thought-provoking book that easily sustained my interest.

Awesome read.... Very fun read. I truly enjoyed every minute of this book.

Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. While this fascinating story evokes a poignant sense of a a difficult time in our history, the story seemed a bit too pat. Some of the situations, for instance, when Henry finds Keiko and her family at the train station in the midst of such chaos seems bit far fetched. Likewise finding them at the camp. The romantic connection between them seems a bit deep for two so young...14 - 16? The character Ethel happened along at just the right time as did Keiko when she reappeared. It seemed a bit predicable. The fact that there was no mention of Hiroshima or Nagasaki gave a sense that the author was in a hurry to end the story and skipped on to the Pacific peace treaty. I liked the way several outcasts came together. Sheldon, Henry, and Keiko could truly appreciate each other having had similar experiences of being outcasts. I also like the way the author used past and present to tell the story of Henry's life as if it were two stories that eventually came together.

Smooth.... A mellow journey through the song that is life.

Sad but touching. A very good, quick read. So very sad but also very touching. A great tale of love.

Great. A wonderful story!

The Hotel on the corner of Bitter and Sweet. Great book of historic fiction.

Great Book. wonderful reading! great characters !

Boring!. Y don't u write something that won't bored u to sleep for 10 hours! And that's the truth!!!

Best Audio Book!. It’s very rare that I listen to a book twice, but the Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet is an exception to the case. I bought the audio version when it first came out and just listened to it again. I loved it even more the second time. The author and the narrator are phenomenal! This book will not disappoint.

Corner of bitter and sweet. Enjoyed every word. I wish you had another book, I would start on it immediately.

Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. An amazing true story about a time before I was born. The sad reality of life in America during WWII. Centuries later how wonderful people can be to try to fix necessary atrocities of the past. This should be a must read in our schools like Ann Frank is.

Children are not little adults. This is a finely written novel with one significant minus - the author puts the words that would be ordinarily spoken by adults in children's mouths. The dialogues between Henry and Keiko, kids in the middle school, did not ring true and it soured the whole work. Given the fact that the author has six kids, I wish he paid more attn to the way kids talk and behave.

On the corner of bitter and sweet. Good book about what happened here in the us during wwii and you never hear about....
