The Confession by John Grisham Book Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • An innocent man is about to be executed. Only a guilty man can save him.

In 1998, in the small East Texas city of Sloan, Travis Boyette abducted, raped, and strangled a popular high school cheerleader. He buried her body so that it would never be found, then watched in amazement as police and prosecutors arrested and convicted Donté Drumm, a local football star, and marched him off to death row.

Now nine years have passed. Travis has just been paroled in Kansas for a different crime; Donté is four days away from his execution. Travis suffers from an inoperable brain tumor. For the first time in his miserable life, he decides to do what’s right and confess. But how can a guilty man convince lawyers, judges, and politicians that they’re about to execute an innocent man?

John Grisham. By far my favorite author! Each book takes you to a new level of another life. I just can't put any of his books down! Keep them coming!!

The Confession. Fun read. I always enjoy Grisham books.

Loved it. This was a fantastic read, one of my favorites from Grisham. I highly recommend this book.

Guilty...I loved it!. I just finished The Confession. It was one of those books I looked forward to reading every evening. It was so good that i had to bring it while on holiday. I recently finished the Jack Reacher novel and was hard pressed to read another. Storyline is ok, but the prose does little for me. In consideration of the genre, my thoughts went to Mr. Grisham. I am a fan of his writing, but haven't read him in a long time. The moment I started reading, I was refreshed to his writing style and language. The Confession is a well written novel with poignant characters and topic. I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I cried in several chapters. Unexpected and griping. Personal and heartfelt. I highly recommend The Confession for your next read.

The Confession. Despite what the critics say, I could not put this book down. I was in total suspense throughout the entire book and John Grisham is a master at that. This was actually better then, The Innocent Man, because it was fiction and Mr. Grisham could take more liberties with the facts.

The Confession. Disappointing. This book had me glued for one whole day, but provided a huge and sad let down. As a mother of a son, I could not read any further after the execution!!!

The Confession. Awesome read!

Death Penalty. This book is a gripping account of the flaws in the desire to execute criminals. There are a lot of things worse than dying. Some individuals cannot be rehabilitated. In economic terms it is cheaper to incarcerate someone for life than it is to execute them. In the final analysis as the author so clearly explains, it no longer appears that execution is a viable alternative for the incorrigibles in our society. Thank you Mr. Grisham for this excellent tale. Your points are well made.

Thought provoking. This book is a fast moving novel involving one of the hot button issues of the day.

Another home run on your part, John. Of all the Grishams I have read, this one actually made me want to cry...for even a short while. When Travis Boyette comes to meet Keith Schroeder, you are ready for the journey, and the chase to begin. I too think that Grisham hits the ball out of the work with this one. And I too believe that we as human beings are foolish to think we are anyone to decide who deserves to live or die.

Phenomenal. This book is amazing. The plot, the characters, the actual book was beyond of what I have expected. One again, John Grisham has done an amazing job on issues that plague us today. This book, although it had some parts I would have rewritten, is amazing. This book is truly worth the price, I had an amazing time reading this book, and I do hope you too, Go ahead and download it!

The Confession. This is a spellbinding book that I did not want to put down. The story unfortunately does represent the injustice that has occurred in our country. As a civil lawyer I have not thought much about the death penalty. But this book has opened my eyes. David Hamilton,Esg

Good book. The confession was good but could've ended after Travis was finally caught and placed in jail.

A good read!. Had to stop reading when Donté was pronounced dead, and moved on to start reading The Litigators. It is a sad sorry, with strong political undertones. I picked it up again a day later & was happy to know that characters like Kerber & Koffee were exposed- exposure isn't a sufficient punishment in my opinion. It's a good read tho'-such a corrupt system. Wrongful conviction and eventual destruction of a fellow man's life.

The Confession. Thought provoking, great reading. One of Grishams best.

Welcome Back Mr. Grisham. I have read two or three of John Grisham's novels that were not about the law. Fortunately I had also read over ten novels he wrote about the law. "The Painted House" and the one about the a Christmas story were two novels I'd read in which Mr. Grisham's wrote about non-law subjects. If those were the only Grisham novels I had read, I would never have picked up "The Confession". I didn't enjoy the "Painted House" and only tolerated the book about the Christmas story. That said, I think Mr. Grisham is back. The Confession reminded me of some of John's other great novels about the law such as "A Time to Kill" and "The Testament". When John Grisham writes about the law and courts and the proceedings and processes, he hits the ball out of the park. While "The Confession" was not his best novel, it was supremely satisfying. The plot kept me reading for "just a few more pages". I look forward to "The Litigator" and continue to be a John Grisham fan. When I enjoy over 90% of the books I read from one author, then I consider myself a fan. I will read anything by John Grisham and give it my honest review. The "Painted House", well, you might want to skip that one. I do recommend "The Confession" for your reading pleasure. Welcome back Mr. Grisham!

Amazing. Absolutely amazing, it brings me back to "The Chamber". It truly is a book that hits your heart hard and your mind even harder. If you never read it, your missing out on a truly life changing book! I could not put it down and will never be the same. Definitely another home run from John Grisham.

The Confession. We see so much violence and killing in this day and time of television that we've become very desensitized to all of it, including executions of individuals on death row. This book is a testament to those on death row, many of whom have found to be innocent in recent years. It also brings the horror of the journey of someone who has received the sentence of death. I would highly recommend this book. It was a great read leaving me with even more mixed feelings about whether or not the death penalty should be used. I loved the characters who made it so real. Thanks John for yet another terrific and insightful story. Cindy Demme Bradenton, FL

Fantastic. Really enjoyed this. It may be my favorite Grisham book.

The Confession. If I had ten stars, I'd use them all! One of the distinguishing books in Grisham's storied career, it raised emotions in me that I didn't know even existed, and opened my eyes to the death sentence debate. I say this as a proponent of capital punishment and a long-time Son of Texas. Outstanding book.

Excellent book!. When I bought this book, it was more because I wanted to read a John Grisham book. My expectations, thus, were moderate. But as the book progressed, it was one of his best: I liked the depth, and details. Also found it hard hitting. Made me firmer in my view on capital punishment.

Predictable, boring. This is a rather predictable, boring story with a strong political message.

Heart wrenching. I am a huge fan of Mr. Grisham. This novel brought to the surface so many emotions. Most of all it makes you think about the inhumane nature of the death penalty. This novel is very sobering and thought provoking. Excellent reading.

The Confession. TERRIFIC

Not my favorite Grisham Title. This had an ok story, slow at times and with a very anti-climatic ending. Probably my least favorite Grisham novel.

The Confession. Usually love Grisham for breezy fun predictable page-turning books. The Confession however droned on far too long, concerning itself with Grisham's political anti death penalty stance, rather than a good fun piece of fiction, which is what we look for in Grisham.

Good read, many layers. Another fantastic novel by Grisham. It is engaging, entertaining, and the characters are rich and deep. There are many layers to this book to enjoy. Any Grisham fans will not be disappointed, and anyone who enjoys plot twists and a activating read... This is your book.

Good, but not his best. I am a big Grisham fan and I have been for 20 years, so I try to read all of his works. They are always well written. Unfortunately, this one did not have the suspense and twists that we're so enjoyable in earlier works. I respect that he actively opposes the death penalty, but this book became more of a advocacy piece than a gripping novel. Maybe that was the intent, and if so, it was well done. As a gripping novel, this one does not rise to the level of his best works. I will be there when the next one comes out hoping for a more traditional Grisham.

The Confession. Another great novel by John Grisham. I never tire of his wonderful novels. Started the book and never wanted to put it down!!!

Exceptional reading. Its almost 3:00a.m. on the 4th night of my conclusion of "confession." I only have time to read at night & as tired as i am, i could not put the book down. I am a lawyer in South Texas & have read & still have many Grishom novels in my book collection. Grishom's writing is fabulous! I had the pleasure of hearing Grishom speak several years back & he was as great a speaker as he is a writer, & David Dow was my professor - very intelligent. Lupita Aguilar

The confession. Could NOT PUT IT DOWN!!!!!!! Wonderful!!!!!!

Captivating page turner. I loved this book!! Every page, every thought and every action painted a vivid picture of the characters!

The confession. The book just grabs hold of you until the very end. I felt as though I was living through the entire ordeal. Very suspenseful, entertaining, and intelligently written. Thought-provoking. Overall a great book if you have stretches of time to read because it's very hard to put down!

One awesome book...... This book kept me anxious to get back to it each time I had to put it down. An amazing story, with twists and turn you didn't expect. A book that will make you re-evaluate your thoughts on subjects you may have felt firm about. I absolutely loved it. Well worth the money to read and then pass on to others!

The confession. Awesome. Very entertaining.

Not bad. It was very well written but it was kind of slow to get going. Once it did it was anti-climatic. A good time killer but nothing amazing.

The condession. One of the best books that I have ever read. John Grisham is a genius!!!

Confession. Spellbinding. Could not put it down. One of the best, a definite book to read

Incredible. Really enjoyed reading. Very engaging, couldn't put it down.

Boring. I'm a huge fan and have read almost all of the books. I couldn't get into it at all. I tried, I really did. My least favorite Grisham book.

Great. One of the best Grisham books ever!

Typical Grisham. Easy to read and interesting from page one. Twisted story and literally had me "ewwwing" several times. Good stuff John!

Hard to put down until you want to throw it across the room.... ...but then you remember you're reading it on an iPad and you don't. Real page turner! I'm a real stoic reader but this one grabbed my emotions. I loved it, I hated it. Good read!

Great!. A must read!! If you love John Grisham, then this is a must!!

Best Grisham Ever. I have read almost all of Grisham's books, and this one is by far my favorite. Best ever!!

The confession. Awful book Grisham stole my money.

Not overly impressed. Although I enjoyed some of the characters and the anti-death penalty over-tones (I'll examine my own pro-death penalty position), I found the book lacking some of Grissom's trade mark plot twist and turns. There was no "longing for the next page for me."

The Confession. A story that in many cases is true. Heart felt & spell binding. Not just a story.

Does it again. Very good book. Loves the plot of the story and how he basically told three stories that all ended with the execution
