Dark Places by Gillian Flynn Book Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Gone Girl, and the basis for the major motion picture starring Charlize Theron

Libby Day was seven when her mother and two sisters were murdered in “The Satan Sacrifice of Kinnakee, Kansas.” She survived—and famously testified that her fifteen-year-old brother, Ben, was the killer. Twenty-five years later, the Kill Club—a secret society obsessed with notorious crimes—locates Libby and pumps her for details. They hope to discover proof that may free Ben.

Libby hopes to turn a profit off her tragic history: She’ll reconnect with the players from that night and report her findings to the club—for a fee. As Libby’s search takes her from shabby Missouri strip clubs to abandoned Oklahoma tourist towns, the unimaginable truth emerges, and Libby finds herself right back where she started—on the run from a killer.

Praise for Dark Places

“[A] nerve-fraying thriller.”—The New York Times

“Flynn’s well-paced story deftly shows the fallibility of memory and the lies a child tells herself to get through a trauma.”—The New Yorker

“Gillian Flynn coolly demolished the notion that little girls are made of sugar and spice in Sharp Objects, her sensuous and chilling first thriller. In Dark Places, her equally sensuous and chilling follow-up, Flynn . . . has conjured up a whole new crew of feral and troubled young females. . . . [A] propulsive and twisty mystery.”—Entertainment Weekly

“Flynn follows her deliciously creepy Sharp Objects with another dark tale . . . The story, alternating between the 1985 murders and the present, has a tense momentum that works beautifully. And when the truth emerges, it’s so macabre not even twisted little Libby Day could see it coming.”—People (4 stars)

“Crackles with peevish energy and corrosive wit.” —Dallas Morning News

“A riveting tale of true horror by a writer who has all the gifts to pull it off.”—Chicago Tribune

"It's Flynn's gift that she can make a caustic, self-loathing, unpleasant protagonist someone you come to root for.”—New York Magazine

“[A] gripping thriller.”—Cosmopolitan

"Gillian Flynn is the real deal, a sharp, acerbic, and compelling storyteller with a knack for the macabre.”—Stephen King

Dark, Twisted, Addicting, Amazing. Just like all of Gillian Flynn's work, this wonderfully dark psychological thriller will keep you guessing until the absolute final moment...at which point, you will realize that none of your guesses even came close. You will hate to put this book down.

Dark Places. There were times I caught myself holding my breath. It takes you from clueless to certain back to clueless, then to leaning towards your original assumption, to doubting that assumption once more, and finally to stunned. Stunned. You can't stop reading until you know.

10/10. Plot twist of an ending!

Dark places. You can’t put it down

Skip it. This book is incredibly dark. I expected some doom and gloom from the synopsis, but this just keeps delving deeper into uncomfortable territory. I had nightmares from it because it was just unnecessarily disturbing. The characters are all unlikable. The ending is ridiculous. Skip it.

Dark in all the right ways. A tough, gritty murder mystery which is compelling, well paced and a fabulous read. Highly recommended, especially if you have read her other books.

Awful. I can't believe this is a best selling author. I couldn't even get through the free sample, boring overdone descriptions trying to be literary . . . Ridiculous character descriptions. Can't believe anyone pays good money for this book or writes a good review.

Page turner. As hard to put down as Gone Girl. Great read!

Superb. Enjoying this book from beginning to end. Excellent.

Rushed and Really Bad Ending. The beginning and rising parts of the book were good, but when we get closer to the climax and conclusion, everything starts to feel like the author ran out of time. The ending itself is really abrupt and too unrealistic for the plot. Even the characters POV seems abruptly happier than it was pages before the very end. It's not something I'd recommend, honestly just because of that.

Couldn't put it down!. I could not put his book down. Riveting. Fast paced. Intense.

Wasn't for me. I didn't love this book. The way it was written was sometimes confusing, I was not glued to it and I like books I can be glued too.

Page turner. Just as you think you’ve got the whole plot figured out there’s a new twist that throws everything off. I love how it can jump from character and time setting throughout the chapters but never get confused by that. Overall great book!

Dark Places. I opened the book and didn't close it until it was done. such a good book. I loved it. I recommend all the friends and family if they want a good read, this is the book for them

Good for a quick read. Super easily digestible. Not as page-turning of a read as Flynn’s other material but still gripping. Heroines across Flynn’s novels definitely feel like just slightly different versions of each other. Sadly, twist is predictable. Not the shook moment I wanted but still nice. Overall a great read for a domestic flight, but not something I would be into enough to come back to over a longer period of time.

Dark Places- full of mystery and suspense!. Better than Gone Girl....could not put it down! This is a must read if you are into a suspenseful page-turner!

I rodéeloxpdpp. WeEspecially sewSse has p so ever oopioiipoioiipppppppp

Great book!!. I absolutely loved this book! Just when you think you know who killed, the plot twists and leaves you completely stunned! Thank Gillian Flynn. Your book was amazing.

Suspense-filled. The story kept my attention as the pieces of the puzzle fell together. An impeccable read.

The Darkest Corner of your Imagination. It is hard for me to even fathom the creativity, experience and sicko mind that could even imagine this plot line. Then to take the life of the injured party from childhood through adulthood and answer what would result in her persona is intensely intricate. It is in the finest of the details that the answers lie. Reminds us that the facts we know may only be our perspective.

I could not put it down!. Even better than "gone Girl."

Great read. Great book! Sad story but kept my attention. Didn’t want to put it down. I thought about it when I wasn’t reading. Flynn is a great story teller!

Hard to put down. I enjoyed this book mostly, except had to skip over certain parts that were too disturbing. Over all great book.

She does is in all of her books. Her books are good you think they are dark and ominous and all that. She pulls you in then you get towards the end where it feels rushed and you are like dude stop rushing and let it flow. I cannot tell you how disappointing this was and it had the potential of being a great book. It didn't get all over the place until near the end and she got sloppy. I will not be buying anymore of her books until she does some writing courses or some thing. I can't waste time anymore.

Fantastic and gripping read. Starts off interesting but the ending could’ve been much better

Slow moving 3/4 of the book.. Slow moving 3/4 of the book. I did enjoy the ending.

❤️. 🥰

The best book I have ever read. This book is incredible. I am at a loss for words. The authors description of everything from the characters to the scenery to the scents...,you feel as if you are literally watching the story line as opposed to reading it. Buy this! You will not be disappointed.

A classic. I am 100% impressed by Gillian Flynn’s writing! Amazing read! I commend Ms. Flynn’s creative mind. Haven’t read a book this good in a long time.

Great Thriller Read!. After reading Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, I was inclined to read all her other works, naturally, and this one, by far, is my most favorite by her. The jumps of perspective are so brilliant, they are years and years apart and yet, still flow seamlessly into a wonderful story. This story is gory and raunchy and quite disturbing in all the best ways possible. Thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it!

Too long. This book was boring And way too far fetched at the end. Too many pages for such little activity. I had to force myself to read the book.

Great Story Line. It was a little hard to get into but I quickly found myself sucked in , unable to put it down . The only Thing I'd tell u to prepare yourself for ? The author has a little problem with dragging out a point or irrelevant facts she'd throw in. They can be a little aggravating . I'd suggest u skim when u get to those parts !

Haunting. Wonderful thriller!

Dark Places. Amazing page-turner!

Everything was great until the end. I was not a fan of the end. I thought it could’ve been a lot more interesting to find out the truth about what happened that night. Other than that, the book kept me interested waiting for the end.

Like a really ugly gory train wreck. So Gillian can write I'll give her that. But this book is like my review title says and like that train wreck you can't look away. But you leave the scene feeling dirty & sick to your stomach. I just thought Gone Girl was ugly. Dark Places makes that book look like a Disney story.

Dark places. Must read this book. Kept me guessing from beginning to end.

Great book!. One of my favorite books!

A must read. I found this book to be slow at first, but once the author gets warmed up, this book is far from that. Flynn has this amazing ability to piece together small details and turn them into something huge. An absolute must read for mystery lovers.

Dark Places. Dark Places keeps you intrigued and I couldn't wait to read the next page. Amazing book

Complex story. This was a compelling story. Initially, I was bored only because I didn’t understand the characters and I assumed that it was going to be a predictable ending. However, as the story progressed, I really felt gravitated towards finding out “who done it”. There were so many elements that left me entertained and there were some that I was confused about. Relevancy is key in these mystery novels and I think Gillian does it well, you just have to be patient.

Dark Places price. Book was 3.99 a week ago and now it's 9.99. Of it goes back down I'll change my review and buy the book. 9.99 is a little much for a book from 2009

Amazing. Amazing story - vivid language, unreal good

Enjoyed but a Little Odd. I enjoyed the book for the most part and was very into the whodunnit of it all but the ending was a bit odd for me. I don’t know who I wanted the bad guy to be but who it ultimately was was a little out of left field.

Didn’t even finish the book. There’s a weird part with a guy in high school and a fifth grade girl and honestly nothing really happened but it was weird enough that I just didn’t feel comfortable finishing the book.

Just ok. Gone Girl and Sharp Objects were SO good that I was a little disappointed with this one. Slow in some parts and the ending was a little strange. Overall I like the writing style so I’ll keep reading her books!

Good read. I enjoyed reading it but some moments was too weird.

The Day family...murdered...one survivor. Dark Places was about Libby being the sole survivor, after her brother Ben murdered her two older sisters and mother. Libby went on a witch hunt paid for by the Kill Club to contact people who they suspected had information regarding the night of the murders. The Day family technically had three survivors: Ben who was in prison, Runner the father, and Libby the lone survivor. Ben was fifteen years old when he was accused of killing his family. Runner was a drunk always begging his ex-wife Patty for money. He was a violent man who was immature and a terrible father. Libby was the youngest girl. Gillian included chapters leading up to the day of the murder, beginning with January 2nd. These were the most informative chapters. They helped develop Ben's frame of mind and the family's dynamics. Gillian executed an interesting and thought provoking storyline, but I still found myself bored at times. I was most fond of her concept of creating a detective out of Libby by using The Kill Club as inspiration. Libby's character was more concerned with the popularity of her family's murder and earning money from the interviews. Even though, Libby was seven years old when this took place Libby seemed quite detached from her family. Libby certainty became bitter and volatile at the mention of the Kill Club wanting to prove Ben's innocence, yet she was only interested in profiting by selling her story. Libby wasn't grieving the loss of her family nor interested in hearing from her brother Ben. Libby completely shut herself off from people unless they were willing to give her money. Quite a shallow and lazy character who had no drive in society. Libby seemed more interested in profiting from her families murder and using their deaths as a museum exhibit. Ben's character was fifteen years old when the murder took place. Ben's reminiscing came off bitter towards his sisters, mother, and father. Ben was bullied in school and teased by his girlfriend who was older than him. At fifteen Ben was desperate to become a man and to be treated as a man. I loved the concept of this storyline and the unique method used for detective work. However, I struggled with the execution. Mainly, I struggled with Libby's character who was lazy, agile, and indifferent. This town was quick to judge and lacked the necessary resources to investigate a murder case. “Everything’s a theory, that’s why it’s a mystery”. Favorite quote. Gillian told a heartwarming story about the Day family and their struggles on the farm. Ben being fifteen without a father and living with four women made him feel inadequate as the man of the house. Ben was bullied by kids at school and desperate to connect with people, yet the friends he made still bullied him. Patty was harassed by the bank for needing more money. Patty struggled to stay on top her loan payment. Money was hard to get when she was responsible for four children and a farm. Gillian painted the town of Kinnakee as these backward thinking people who were quick to judge. The people in Kinnakee ostracized the Day family with wild tales based on Patty's divorce, having four children, and being poor. Gillian packed this story with all kinds of action in one day. So many characters involved and so many clues, yet the investigators shut down the case quickly when they had Ben and Libby's confession. The story contained graphic bloody violent scenes. It also contained some graphic sex scenes.

DarkPlaces. While a good thriller, gone girl and better book, kept me much more intrigued

Good. It was good. The author does a good job of telling a story.

Great book. Was excellent

Excellent!!. Could not put this book down. Excellent read!!

It was ok.... After reading Gone girl and Sharp Objects, i just had to read Dark Places. But was sadly disappointed :(. It was very slow, I actually couldn't bring myself to finish the book i had to read the last 3 chapters...something I've never done :(

Meh!!. The story was a bit slow and the conclusion was lackluster. There was a little to much detailing for my liking, which made it boring for pages sometimes but I'm glad I read it.

Dark. This was a great book and I did enjoy reading it. One thing I struggled with was how dark the book was. I would still recommend it to a friend.

I was waiting for so much more.... The book is ok, it's very slow... The hole story is good, but there's something missing...
