The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: The Illustrated Edition by Douglas Adams Book Summary

This beautifully illustrated edition of the New York Times bestselling classic celebrates the 42nd anniversary of the original publication—with all-new art by award-winning illustrator Chris Riddell.

SOON TO BE A HULU SERIES • “An astonishing comic writer.”—Neil Gaiman

Nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read

It’s an ordinary Thursday morning for Arthur Dent . . . until his house gets demolished. The Earth follows shortly after to make way for a new hyperspace express route, and Arthur’s best friend has just announced that he’s an alien.

After that, things get much, much worse.

With just a towel, a small yellow fish, and a book, Arthur has to navigate through a very hostile universe in the company of a gang of unreliable aliens. Luckily the fish is quite good at languages. And the book is The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy . . . which helpfully has the words DON’T PANIC inscribed in large, friendly letters on its cover.

Douglas Adams’s mega-selling pop-culture classic sends logic into orbit, plays havoc with both time and physics, offers up pithy commentary on such things as ballpoint pens, potted plants, and digital watches . . . and, most important, reveals the ultimate answer to life, the universe, and everything.

Now, if you could only figure out the question. . . .

Favorite. Literally, my favorite books of all time!

A timeless classic!. I’ve read many, many books in my life, but none have ever made me laugh out loud the way Douglas Adams’ have. This series is a classic, in all of its forms—radio drama, novelization, television—and this first book is a must-read for anyone who appreciates raucous, irreverent humor.

AHHHHHHH!!!. Stop!!! I almost dropped my croissant!!!

If you haven’t already read this-. I envy your journey into these pages.

Not entertaining. Nothing happened. Like it was a bunch of build up for nothing.

Imaginative and Fun. Douglas Adams was a brilliant writer. Hitchiker's Guide is short, sweet, and hard to beat. It's extremely funny (in that dry, British sort of way) and yet still manages to be a fun little sci-fi adventure. Adam's imaginative use of the ubsurd makes this book surprising and enjoyable. For those looking for a good entry into science fiction, this book is a good one to start with, since it is short, fun, and interesting.

An old favorite. My parents shared this book with me as a teen. I love the crazy characters and their wild adventures! So much better than the new movie!

Interesting enough to continue the series. I picked up this book to finally explore reason behind the cultural phenomenon it has become. The story starts off pretty interesting, the concepts explored are intriguing, characters are meh, but considering this is part 1 of 5 (or 6), I am looking forward to continue to series.

Bulldozer. Love this book! However, in this edition, it seems that there has been a mistake in that every time there is a word or phrase in italics, instead of what the word or phrase actually is, it just says “bulldozer”. Amusing the first few times, annoying after a while. Please fix!!!

Cover looks solid. So far so good. Glass half full guy, over-an-out. To be continued...

The most amazing and comical book I've read. I'm currently just starting the life, universe, and everything book (third book) and this series is great in every book so far.

42 Stars. My favorite kind of humor... dry, clever, and intelligent. It’s sarcastic, it’s ironic... and the references, oh my. Towels and the number 42... whenever I see this number, I make a joke. If you haven’t read it, you MUST. It’s hilarious.

Great read!. One of my favorite books of all time. Unbelievably funny and well-written. Read this series if you are marginally intelligent and love laughing.

Love it. 10/10

Amazing. I thought that it was funny, interesting and descriptive

Great!. This is a fun and adventurous book with lots to enjoy! It's a book full of whitty humor and a ridiculous story. The ending is very abrupt, but it leads well into the next book. This is a story by a guy who really knows where his towel is. I definitely recommend reading this book, even if some of the jokes wouldn't be understood by a younger audience.

This is one of my favorite books. My friend recommended this to me and I absolutely loved it. Now I'm only 11, but I just couldn't put it down. The jokes were hilarious, the storytelling was great, and it was perfectly paced. Would definitely read the entire series.

:). I'm dying of laughter. Instant 42/10. The people that criticize it just don't understand the humor-this is one of the best books I've ever read.

Critique, not of the book, but of the electronic version.. I rember reading this many years ago in hardcopy and greatly enjoying it, so I wish to emphasize the book itself, IMO, is 4 stars out of 5. I would have thought that by now an e-version would have had all the kinks and bugs worked out. But I'm only a few chapters in, and already I've encountered a couple of superscript footnote numbers, but the footnotes themselves are nowhere to be found. So already I'm dissatisfied - 2 stars out of 5 for the e-book. Wish there was a way to direct such complaints to those who could take corrective action, instead of putting them here in the review.

Boring. Book was very slow characters are not super fun too much made up stuff

Amazing book. I’ve actually been meaning to read this book for a while. I found out about it through a friend’s birthday party around 2 years ago, where we all watched the movie. I think that the author did a good job of adding humor to what could have otherwise been a more bland sci-fi book. A lot of the ideas in it were really interesting. For example, with the babblefish, the concept of a creature that can warp sound waves to the language of the host is really cool (even though it doesn’t make any logical sense). Also the concept of an impossibility drive is a honestly awesome and unique idea. I’d have to say Marvin is probably my most favorite character (both from the book and film) because, well come on, he’s a depressed robot that still can somehow make me smile. Over all I think it’s a really fun book and I definitely advise it if you like sci-fi and/or adventure.

Funny classic. hitchhikers is a classic satirical comedy about existentialism. It’s funny in many parts. My favorite is why dolphins think they are superior to humans for the same reason humans think the opposite. It’s a small book, one can finish in a day if they are not wearied.

A terrific book. This is definitely one of the best books I have read in a long time.

Great book. Wonderful

Strange. Interesting but very strange. I wasn't entirely sure that I had gotten to the end.

Dank. Dis bok wuz kool and sweg

Be prepared to be sucked in. I started reading this book after seeing it referred to for years. It’s a wonderful read that ends much too soon. It ends so soon, that you’ll buy the next book and the one after that. The whole series is head spinning madness but in a good way. The wit and humor is very British, dry and subtle. Read on and most of all, Don’t Panic, unless you’re told to.

Perfect. Booooootifuuuuul
