The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams Book Summary

In one complete volume, here are the five classic novels from Douglas Adams’s beloved Hitchhiker series.

Now celebrating the pivotal 42nd anniversary of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, soon to be a Hulu original series!

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (Nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read)
Seconds before the Earth is demolished for a galactic freeway, Arthur Dent is saved by Ford Prefect, a researcher for the revised Guide. Together they stick out their thumbs to the stars and begin a wild journey through time and space.

The Restaurant at the End of the Universe
The moment before annihilation at the hands of warmongers is a curious time to crave tea. It could only happen to the cosmically displaced Arthur Dent and his comrades as they hurtle across the galaxy in a desperate search for a place to eat.

Life, the Universe and Everything
The unhappy inhabitants of planet Krikkit are sick of looking at the night sky– so they plan to destroy it. The universe, that is. Now only five individuals can avert Armageddon: mild-mannered Arthur Dent and his stalwart crew.

So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish
Back on Earth, Arthur Dent is ready to believe that the past eight years were all just a figment of his stressed-out imagination. But a gift-wrapped fishbowl with a cryptic inscription thrusts him back to reality. So to speak.

Mostly Harmless
Just when Arthur Dent makes the terrible mistake of starting to enjoy life, all hell breaks loose. Can he save the Earth from total obliteration? Can he save the Guide from a hostile alien takeover? Can he save his daughter from herself?

Includes the bonus story “Young Zaphod Plays It Safe”

“With droll wit, a keen eye for detail and heavy doses of insight . . . Adams makes us laugh until we cry.”—San Diego Union-Tribune

“Lively, sharply satirical, brilliantly written . . . ranks with the best set pieces in Mark Twain.”—The Atlantic

Love em.. Great collection.

Wow. The best book I have ever read

42. Read it...then read it again.

The Ultimate guide to the Galaxy. Hands down the best of the best in sci-fi. Over 40 years I read, reread this book and still enjoyed it every time. BTW… I got all the books, over 800 pages on my reader. You gotta watch the download requirements.

Simply brilliant!. One of my favorite books of all time, deftly blending humor with science fiction and social commentary.

It's like having the Bible!. I don't personally own this particular book, but between iTunes, Kindle and others, I do know what it is like to have every Hitchhiker book in the palm of my hand, via my awesome iPad 2. I can vouch for every single one these books as being worth 12$ you will spend today! These books could be read by anyone from elementary students to retirement house people. The story is just so awesome and unique, that there is nothing out there like it! I mean there is plenty of Sci Fi and outerspace adventures, but not like this! If i had it my way, the guys who did Guide to the Galaxy movie, would of finished all the books into movies. Anyways, stop reading and just click sumbit, and read chapter one and if you don't feel like reading the rest the books than you will be the first person I know who doesn't love adventures!

Wondrous. However, this publication has frequent typos.

Brilliant. Probably my favorite book. Everything about it is brilliant. Definitely recommend.

Hitchhiking appears more dangerous than one may think. Funny how the story weaves a finite set of people together and then going their own ways. The great mish mash shaker pours friends to the brink of British disaster just to comely find eddies in the unrelenting tide of space time. Absolutely brilliant and wonderfully addicting as to what will happen next I so want the patience and steadfast dead pan approach to tackle whatever happens to enter his private universe

Outstanding Literature. I mean what I say when I say "literature." This is not just some sci-fi book, this is an incredibly well written work that deserves a place along side the greats of contemporary literature. The humor, the style, the pace... It is all of the highest caliber. I have read this book (these books) at least once a year since I was young, and continue to do so to this day. Do yourself a favor and read them. You'll never look at science fiction the same way again!

don't panic!. First of all, if the Earth is about to be blown up, DON'T PANIC! Get yourself a towel and hitchhike on the next intergalatic spaceship that comes by. You may not live in a wacky world, but you can enter one by obtaining the best selling book the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Just sit back, enjoy the ride and find out the absolute answer to life. The only problem is figuring out what the answer means.

Nice humor, great story. I have the hardcover edition of this book. It beautifully blends sci-fi with a great deal of humor and unexpected twists and turns in the story. I just love it!

A Work of Genius. These books are funny, relevant, irrelevant, goofy, smart, fast moving, unpredictable, satirical, and while harpooning the wonderful world of Science Fiction at times, they do so with respect. After all, it is a comic version of the genre.

Best book ever!. This is the greatest, most random science fiction story ever written! I’m collecting editions of the book, and this is technically my third copy of this version. All five books, one short story, one reasonable price and 42… well we don’t know what that is do we? Hilarious stories 42/10

DON’T PANIC. I have a real life version and don’t actually own the digital version but I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book. I love the interjections by the Guide and the ridiculousness of the 42 thing and the flying in So Long And Thanks For All The Fish. This is the best book I have ever read.

42. Incredible book series, would definitely recommend to any fans of humor, sci-fi, or fantasy.

Great Good Fun.. Pretty hard to beat the wonderfully off-beat Douglas Adams.

Hands down. Best book ever.

100/10. I have a hard copy of this book (doesn’t matter, ‘cause it’s the same), and was very impressed. I absolutely loved random interjections by the Guide, as well as the story line. During So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish, it feels more like the characters are doing their own thing (e.g., Arthur trying to find out what happened to the dolphins, while also stumped that Earth still, despite being demolished by the Vogons, exists, while Zaphod does Zarquon-knows-what. However, it still is funny, because it retains the ridiculous physics and reason that runs this series; I highly recommend buying!!!

Re-read it. To your 12-year-old.. One of the few authors who makes you put the book down, cause u r laughing so hard. Sharing this with my intelligent, sardonic 12-year-old has brought us together closer than any other two people on the planet. We miss you, Mr. Adams!

Tripe. And drivel. With a few funny moments and mildly interesting nuggets.

Fantastic. I was entertained and amused till the last page. Somehow Douglas Adams keeps you guessing with his unconventional style, and even if these books don't surprise you in the typical sci-fi way, his storytelling style sure does

10/10. These are my favorite books of all time put into one, I highly recommend it to anyone that likes science fiction and comedy.

Funny, deep, and thoughtful. I've been reading this book since I was in high school, and every time I read it, it puts the stress of daily life into perspective. Thank you Mr. Adams!

Great book. 42!!

Good. The only reason it’s not 5 stars is because it was a little confusing at times. Other than that, amazing!

42. This is a must for every nerd. I own it!

Inspirational. Satire isn't a favorite genre of mine. Yet this series of books by Douglas Adams is a very large social satirical reduction of how silly we humans really can be. I have read the entire series 5 tines or more sense I fell in love with someone who holds the mirror up to all or creation a makes me laugh. You will live several time over as each of your emotions ride around the cosmos. It was my pleasure Mr.Adams and thank you.

Not sure what to think.... I made myself read the whole collection, and I'm glad I did.... I think. Give it a go! You might like it... Or not.

Brilliant. No words. Just so good. Douglas Adams is amazing

Classic funky and so much fun!. Some reviewers mention the typos, these were in the printed versions so, of course, they carry over into the digital version. If your mind focused on even one typo for more than a fleeting second, I am deeply afraid that you missed so much that the book had to offer. If you are considering buying the book, don't let the few misspelled words deter you. They in NO WAY distract from this masterpiece of pop culture.

Amazing. These books are amazing!

Regret. I regret buying this.

Don’t Panic. Third time in my life reading this book series and I still think it’s the greatest comedy book series ever written (Fletch in a close second.) if you love sci-fi and humor, this is for you. This collection has all five books plus a rather disappointing short story. The books are fantastic.

Profound, phunny, phanstastic. If you are a human being living on planet (now defunct) planet Earth, you deserve to read this book. THGTTG is about...EVERYTHING you need to know...and think about. God bless Doug Adams.

42. That's the meaning of life. I remember reading this book in high school. It's the only book I ever actually lol'd. P.S. 42!!!!!

Wacky. I spent 4 months reading these, laughed a bunch and thought about it a lot. A lot of fun. You will find yourself genuinely interested in the lives of Arthur, Trillian, and Ford. Enjoy the ride!

Resilient Brilliance. Reading Hitchhiker's Guide for the very first time in 2016, I was absolutely blown away. The very definition of a timeless masterpiece – it holds up as though it was written yesterday.

Love.. All the way to the end of the universe.

Amazing. This series has captivated me for a whole week. The text always makes me think about all the craziness that is the universe. Cant get enough of it

Chaos. Douglas Adam's creative mind is a wonder to perceive. Originally one will find his ideas and plots to be chaotic. As in the real science of chaos there is a built in order. As in the complex weavings of the Julia sets (Dr Julia's work predated that of Mandelbrot by decades and the more famous Mandelbrot Set is simply a visual catalog of Dr. Julia's work) Adam's chaos weaves into a beautiful design. What seems to be a random phrase in the first and second book becomes a well woven major concept in the third. (example "Oh no, not again"). I have just finished the fifth book of the triology after a decade pause following reading the fourth and was pleased to find mysteries of the first four resolved or at least extended. Possibly we should not even think of the volumes as being in a specific order. After all "what happens, happens. If what happens causes something else to happen, it will happen. If what happens causes it to happen again, it will happen again. None of this is in chronological order". A person might be just as satisfied and entertained by reading MOSTLY HARMLESS first followed by any one of the remaining volumes and so on until they have completed the series. Possibly though, there might be any number of extra volumes hidden out there......
