Six shots. Five dead. One heartland city thrown into a state of terror. But within hours the cops have it solved: a slam-dunk case. Except for one thing. The accused man says: You got the wrong guy. Then he says: Get Reacher for me.

And sure enough, ex—military investigator Jack Reacher is coming. He knows this shooter–a trained military sniper who never should have missed a shot. Reacher is certain something is not right–and soon the slam-dunk case explodes.

Now Reacher is teamed with a beautiful young defense lawyer, moving closer to the unseen enemy who is pulling the strings. Reacher knows that no two opponents are created equal. This one has come to the heartland from his own kind of hell. And Reacher knows that the only way to take him down is to match his ruthlessness and cunning–and then beat him shot for shot.

A bit long. I appreciate detail (that's why I read the book vs watch movie), but there are probably 100 pages of TOO MUCH EXTRANEOUS DETAIL!! This is my first Child book and only read it because I heard Tom Cruise is shooting the film (I think he's playing Reacher??), and not overly impressed. With that said, I CAN see this being a GREAT film bc the details will (obviously) removed!! If I can download a cheap Child book I'll give him one MORE shot (yes, pun intended)...ha!

Killing Floor. I loved all the Jack Reacher books by Lee Child I’ve read. But Really Tom Cruise. Gross. No way can I picture him as Reacher. Tried to watch one of movies . Turned it off.

This is an awesome book!. This is a great book, full of suspense and keeps you guessing to the end. Couldn't stop reading it!

Unexpectedly good. Having only read a few paragraphs of the different Reacher books and not getting hooked on any I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the movie. Thinking Tom Cruise did not match my idea of Reacher I was pleasantly surprised at the good job he did. Now I am looking at finally reading one to completion.

Fabulous. I saw the movie a while back. But it took nothing away from the excitement of the Book. Great read. Reacher is my favorite super hero for now. Wow, no messing around that’s what I like 👍🏽

Crime, toughness, suspense, intrigue, snappy dialogue all wrapped up in a '40s noir.. This is my first Lee Child (Jack Reacher) novel, and after reading "A Tale of Two Cities" and "The Brothers Karamazov," I felt like reading something that would hold my interest without weighing me down, but also not make me feel that I was wasting my time :::drumroll::: "One Shot" was just the ticket. Compared to the book, the Reacher movie was sorta like that 70s to 80s candy that you'd put in your mouth and it would start fizzing away and by the time you got around to swallowing any of it there was nothing to swallow. You were sort of left with that feeling you get when you're right there ready to sneeze, and it vanishes leaving you thinking, I hate it when that happens. The relative ease with which the Reacher story was told reminded me of all of the "Jesse Stone" stories I plowed through (and watched). I just liked the pacing of the story, and the way the characters interacted, in each of them.

One shot. Another great Reacher yarn. A little far fetched in places and dragged out in others, but a definite five stars reading.

Movie vs book. I saw the movie 1st. AWESOME. But when I read the book I saw that it was different in almost every place. The movie was undoubtedly better in this case.

One Shot...Bad Shot Tom Cruise...Seriously?!?. One Shot is my 5th Lee Child Novel. I love your writing Lee! But seriously, why did you approve Tom Cruise to be Jack Reacher? I am so disappointed at picturing Tom in that role; doesn't fit the character. Ray Liotta would have been ideal, perfect for playing Jack...looking like Jack! I'll continue reading your books Lee, but most likely not see the movie. Tom Cruise...bad taste.

Best ever.... This is by far the best in the Reacher series. Only thing I can't understand is how Lee Child let them ruin the movie and change the ending of it from the novel! Get Hollywood to screw up a fantastic book.

Top Notch Reacher. Full of twists and turns, this book is an excellent place to start if you're looking for an introduction into who Jack Reacher is. Though the movie is fun and entertaining, it isn't able to capture the intricate details that the book holds.

Very fun read. I am new to Lee Child but not the genre. I very much enjoyed the fast pace of the book as well as the authentic details and thinking who-done it mentality. The violence was not over the top, nor we're the sexual encounters( in this book minimal and respectful to women). This is a better read than the Patterson books by far. I think a person who enjoys a thinking man's game on the order of the Bourne books will enjoy this. Who cares if it is dislike the movie? That critique would be for the movie review, not the original.

One Dimensional. If paid by the word, Child made little money on this pricey paperback. More of a short story with unimaginable character and story development. Like a lot of these novels, simply writing short stories that are more like pulp fiction. Why choose this one for a movie is difficult to understand except maybe overplaying the potential sensuality for the degenerates who would like to see Cruise undress a woman in public.

One Shot. Good plot, not many good subplots. Truly enjoyed the read and had to watch the movie immediately afterwords. Tom Cruise productions did a hatchet job on the ending. DH Read on my iBook.

One of the best writers out there!. For all those not familiar with Lee Child or want to read something by him for the first time please start with "The Killing Floor" come back and we can have a discussion as to why he is one of the best fiction writers out to date! Love Reacher! I'm not sure I would have picked Tom Cruise for the part though. Each fan I'm sure has his/her own vision of Reacher. Keep up the fantastic work Mr. Child!

One Shot. Who picked Tom Cruise to play Reacher? Not a good choice. So far all Lee Child books are great.

Spectacular. Reacher at his very best n. My favorite so far, but then I say that every time I finish one!

Book vs Film. It's natural, when you read the source book of a moderately popular film, to talk about which is better. I always feel this is the wrong approach. Any book written above the level of, to use the old term, a 'dime store novel', is automatically denser and more intricate than any 120 minute adaptation. That being said, I think that aside from the fact that Tom Cruise is about a foot too short this book was well adapted for the screen. The choices kept the framework, the layers and a decent complexity to be true to the novel. As for the novel, it fits nicely into the narrative of Jack Reacher. He's enigmatic to those with whom he comes in contact. This is a modern day version of the "Man With No Name" spaghetti westerns of the early Clint Eastwood. Reacher's military background allows him to possess an intellectual ability to examine his circumstances and reach logical conclusions. There's no 'cheating' by holding back details needed to figure out the story at the 'who dunnit' level. His physique and training means you aren't surprised when he repeatedly comes out on top in most of his confrontations. Most readers will be aware of the film version (I'd read the first novel just before the film was released). Since then I've been a little uncomfortable with the fact that the preceding seven stories ("The Enemy" occurs while Reacher is still in the army, so it falls within his 'service record' life) are complete ciphers. Even if there is a tendency to act as if Reacher was never there in terms of the FBI, locally LEOs and others, someone should be able to find at least the ghost of a trail. In "One Shot" the title itself works at a number of levels. Reacher is reluctantly drawn into the life of a man he once hunted and was ready to grind up in the armies judicial system when politics intervened. This is his second shot. The gunman missed one shot when he should have made, to use the sniper motto, one shot, one kill. To say much more would introduce too many spoilers. Suffice it to say that Reacher fans will walk this anonymous city with Jack without hesitation. Those who begin with him here should be sufficiently intrigued to go back to "The Killing Floor" and start this exploration of the underbelly of society and the nasty people who lurk there.

Book cover is the only problem. Another good Reacher book. However, they are obviously trying to plan the seed of Tom Cruise as Reacher. It just doesn't work for me. Party of Reacher's character is his intimidating size, and unless they only cast short people , Cruise will not be a convincing Reacher

One Shot. It’s incredibly unfortunate that Cruise plays the role of Reacher - I won’t even watch the movies because of that. He is 5’ nothing and Reacher is 6’5” and very intimidating in his size. I love the character and can’t even imagine Cruise being believable in the role. Jason Mamoa would have been a much better pick in my opinion. I love this series and the characters created by Lee Child, I have read about half, most in order but am quickly making it through all of them - thank you Mr Child!

One Shot. Just saw the movie, Tom Cruise was perfect as Jack Reacher, he was exactly like the character in the book. And for once believeable not over done, like most movies these days.
