A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin Book Summary

NOW THE ACCLAIMED HBO SERIES GAME OF THRONES—THE MASTERPIECE THAT BECAME A CULTURAL PHENOMENON

Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King’s Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert’s name. There his family dwells in peace and comfort: his proud wife, Catelyn; his sons Robb, Brandon, and Rickon; his daughters Sansa and Arya; and his bastard son, Jon Snow. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse—unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season.

Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances. Now Robert is riding north to Winterfell, bringing his queen, the lovely but cold Cersei, his son, the cruel, vainglorious Prince Joffrey, and the queen’s brothers Jaime and Tyrion of the powerful and wealthy House Lannister—the first a swordsman without equal, the second a dwarf whose stunted stature belies a brilliant mind. All are heading for Winterfell and a fateful encounter that will change the course of kingdoms.

Meanwhile, across the Narrow Sea, Prince Viserys, heir of the fallen House Targaryen, which once ruled all of Westeros, schemes to reclaim the throne with an army of barbarian Dothraki—whose loyalty he will purchase in the only coin left to him: his beautiful yet innocent sister, Daenerys.

Amazing. I have never had a book capture my attention as much as this book has. The first book and the first season of the show are very closely related and the show doesn't stray off too far from the book. Great book

Great series!. One of my favorite series of all time! Great epic fantastic world.

Game of thrones. Better than the tv series

good book. starts to drag if u have already seen the television show

10/10. Amazing book ! Friend of mine recommended it so i gave it a try and absolutely loved it . 🙌🏻

Excellent Historical Fantasy. Normally, I always read a book before watching the tv show or movie made from it. I didn't with this one, and I think that made my experience better. There are so many characters. I think I would have felt and little overwhelmed and lost reading it first. I'm current on the tv show, and I read the prequel book so I have a much better understanding of who people are and what's going on. It's been so long since I saw the first season of GoT that this book was also a great reminder of who the characters were in the beginning. I noticed things that didn't make it into the show and things that didn't register before. I highly enjoyed reading this and can't wait to continue the series.

Best. Without a doubt best historical/ fantasy/fiction! So much scraped out of European medieval history and folklore— and that includes the Red Wedding. Sadly George is never going to finish the next book let alone the series. Read the books then watch the series.

Wonderful series. Really enjoyed this.

Good. Not bad.It was a little scary but it was worth it.Don't force yourself but it is pretty good.

Excellent. There's nothing I can write about how great this book is that others haven't raved about already. Great writing and great storytelling. What I loved most about this book (and the others in the series is that it was the book that finally got me interested in the fantasy genre. I had tried to read several books in the genre for years and none won me over like Game of Thrones. It has a bit of a historic fiction feel to it and perhaps that is why. I definitely recommend this book to those who have been interested in fantasy as well to people who are looking for a great and addictive book.

Entertaining but some voices are way off. Compared to the show at least. So many cockney accents, even for one of Khal Drogo’s blood riders. And Drogo himself sounds like a drunken Cookie Monster. But I’d still buy it again.

Zezjzbjezjibdb cc. I bet

Excellent!. Better than the awesome TV series! Told from the main players' point of view, and so well done!

Great Read. Amazing beginning to the GoT series and definitely excited for the next book

This book spawned the retarded TV show. BURN IT, IT MUST BURN! BURN I TELL YOU BURN! AT LEAST HARRY POTTER WAS REMOTELY INTERESTING

Magnificent. Modern masterpiece.

Game of thrones and for a good reason it was named that title. It is a great story but you have to get used to the writhers way of writing. It tells you the story from different characters point of view

GOT to the world. I don’t even read, just love Game of Thrones. So i can actually say this book got me into reading. Well done 👏🏼

Excellent book. Amazing 🤩

Epic!. This is a fantastic series!! I’m on a mission to read 50 books in a year. I’ve hit the halfway mark and decided to reread this series since Dance wasn’t out yet when I read it previously. I’m a huge fan of the show - but like most, the books are better by far. A Game of Thrones kept me captured the entire way through. Dany is my favorite character and I found myself reading and then counting the chapters until I would hear from her again. Martins style of story telling is beautiful.. I love how much detail is poured into these books but yet they move through time quickly without sacrifice. It’s easy to while the day away reading this book. If you’re debating whether to read them, you must! The size of the book is a little intimidating, but once you’ve sunk your teeth in you’ll be so glad because the story is soooo amazing! I feel this book and the first season of the show are most alike. Once you move on to A Clash of Kings you’ll notice more of the story is left out of the show. I’m looking forward to the final two books... I have full confidence that George will hook us up with a fabulous ending that gives us all the detail we crave. Also, for the huge fans like me.. read A World of Ice and Fire. It isn’t written as a story like this series, but I loved the reading the history of Westeros. Just an absolute phenomenal world created here!! Through and through.

Overrated tripe. Just shy of mental flatulence

The PW review here is for the wrong book. Readers should be aware that the review from Publishers Weekly included under Details here is for a totally different book (apparently Hannibal by Thomas Harris). Apple should be paying more attention to the listing for one of the bestselling series in America.

Really fun,. Loved this book a and I cannot wait to continue reading the series.

Super tare. Best book ever

Awesome. Awesome

Amazing. Detailed, amazing, interesting, vivid. I love this series with every chapter more and more.

GR8 M8. Scooby and Shaggy always run away side by side when fleeing in terror from a monster. If Shaggy can run at the same speed as Scooby and a Great Danes running speed is 30-40 mph, that means that Shaggy is the fastest human alive beating Usain Bolts top speed of 27 mph.

Riveting. A great piece of literary intrigue. From complex characters to detailed battles. Martin keeps you wondering what drives anyone person on a particular path.

Epic. Good read

Not my choice for entertaining reading. It took me many years to learn that I don't have to finish every book I begin. This is one I will not finish. There are far too many books I still want to read. I am unwilling to commit time to slog through nearly 900 pages of tedium. Game of Thrones may be winning awards as a TV series but as a novel I find it to be disconnected and without a narrative flow. The structure created by the resulting vignettes work for movies/TV but they don't make a compelling story. As entertaining reading (the reason I purchased this book) it is grindingly dull. The best I can say is it's easy to pick up and put down. Neither does the Gaelic cultural overlay work for this reader. It seems forced and stilted at the same time. I have never liked books placed in this setting - it is a difficult task to pull off convincingly. The result here is a thin veneer of the medieval without a sense of historical reality. Middle Earth and Hogwarts both feel more authentic. Save yourself the money and the time. There are plenty of other books to choose from. If you just have to join in with the Game of Thrones phenomena then go to HBO and watch it on TV.

A Song of Ice and Fire Book One. Absolutely spectacular read, that won’t ever fail to entertain you.

An Epic Novel. I am an enormous Game of Thrones fan, having watched the TV series, and so I wanted to take a crack at the books. Based on the first one, I will say that it has truly one of the best novels I have ever read and provides an experience that the TV show cannot. An additive page turner and I'm already planning on purchasing the next four novels.

Awesome book. People should read this book because it is so awesome and so interesting

Prologue is missing pages. Like the title says prologue is missing pages, but good book

Brilliant fantasy!. since the days of J.R.R. Tolkien, there has never been a greater writer of the fantasy genre than the king himself, George RR Martin. The first book I read of his was fire and blood. I was dumbfounded by the way it’s drew me in and kept me reading and only wanting more. This book is no different. From the very first chapter, it was a chore to put this book down. The characters are magnetic. The descriptions he gives of the land he is made in his mind breathtaking. A simply spellbinding read that everyone should experience.

Book is always better than the show. Or so the saying goes and this instance is no exception! Everything is more detailed and vivid than in the show. I recommend fans read the books to get the whole experience. Martin is a great author and storyteller.

Truly a masterpiece. I thought it was meh at the beginning, but after reading more I got so addicted to the story and felt as if I was truly living among them. 100% recommend to anyone.

Fun Read. Good read while at work 👍🏼

Just like the tv show. Listened to the audiobook and it was amazing!

Very good book!. But where is Elden Ring, George?

Amazing book. I watched the series on HBO and was wondering if I should read the book, I thought to my self what's the point to already know what's going to happen but that doesn't matter you learn so much more from the books the show can't cover everything a lot of things are missing if you watched the show read the books !

Kk. That

Just the Beginning.. If you just read A Game of Thrones for the first time and want to see what all the hype is about, get ready for the ride of your life. Everything else is just child's play.Prepare to be hooked instantly. If you don't already have HBO you will be a subscriber by the time you finish the first book. Get ready because WINTER IS HERE. THE GREAT WAR HAS BEGUN. 🐲🗡🐉⚔️

The best epic fantasy series ever. No one is safe in these books, there are no rules... Everything is magic and you will be surprised... And I really hope that George doesn't kill the imp

He ago. Tape is pumvoshi

Muito bom. Melhor fantasia de todos os tempos.

Must Read!. Immerse yourself in the world of Game of Thrones and you won’t regret it. I am hungover from reading the series and watching the HBO TV series. I already miss it!

Greatest book and series. Ever.. This was amazing. I want to read it over and over again. Please!

Game of Thrines. Slow to start but and a bit much to keep up with at first but it all comes together and is a great read I am lucky I found this great series. I love it!!

Worst book EVER. The show is bad and so is this! This “Game of Thrones” storyline is not my type of series. It’s overall bad in my opinion.

Epic. Title says all.

One of the best. Epic

:). Awesome book!!!!! I am on the four book right now and i am loving it!!! Keep up the good work, George R. R. Martin!!!:)

Amazed. I got this book with the thought, that I'd try the sample first, see if its any good, as they say. I ended up buying it & not able to put it down. That, to the author is, I think the best possible complement. ....That & to say that it's a Bloody Great Book! I'm clearly going to read the lot of them.

You will be amazed. If you read even so much as one paragraph, you get hooked.

Unbelievable. No matter how hard I tried to predict the story I failed miserably every time.
