In Cold Blood by Truman Capote Book Summary

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • The most famous true crime novel of all time "chills the blood and exercises the intelligence" (The New York Review of Books)—and haunted its author long after he finished writing it.

On November 15, 1959, in the small town of Holcomb, Kansas, four members of the Clutter family were savagely murdered by blasts from a shotgun held a few inches from their faces. There was no apparent motive for the crime, and there were almost no clues.

In one of the first non-fiction novels ever written, Truman Capote reconstructs the murder and the investigation that led to the capture, trial, and execution of the killers, generating both mesmerizing suspense and astonishing empathy. In Cold Blood is a work that transcends its moment, yielding poignant insights into the nature of American violence.

Masterpiece. Phenomenal book. Truman Capote truly was one of a kind.

Not a audiobook. It was on the audiobook page so I bought for $12.99 but now it will not read it to me.

Stupid. Had a couple good parts, but was mostly off topic and just dumb.

Bored. I was so bored with this book I couldn’t even finish it.

Not for me. Long, drawn out and difficult to finish. A real struggle. Very disappointed.

Decent book, rather over flourished, though.. I thought this was a good book, it did much explanation and nary a detail was not written down. The only complaints I have is that one, the sentences were extremely long, and you can very easily "drift away" due to this. The sentences could have been much shorter and to the point, and still conveyed the same message. My next compliant is not with the book, itself, but with the producers of this ecopy. The last four or five pages of every part were missing. You would turn the page and they just wouldn't appear. So more of a software issue than an "author's issue."

In Cold Blood. Fascinating read. Hard to put down.

Wonderful. A true crime story with the feel of a fictional novel. Thoroughly satisfying.

Good book. Well written! I love his writing style. As someone else mentioned here it’s a true story that reads like a fiction which makes it hard to put down

Good Book. I enjoyed this book far more than I expected although there were parts where nothing significant was added to the experience and which slowed the pace of the book. I am glad I read it since it is a landmark book in its genre.

In Cold Blood. Dick and perry..

AMAZING. I don't read much but this book was absolutely amazing!!!!! It's full of suspense I was glued to the book and finished it in two days. This book is so we'll written, capote truly did an amazing job telling the horrific story if this murder

My grandmother grew up and went to school with this family.. It's interesting to hear her talk about them as her friends and then read an outsiders views on the tragedy. Grandma tells me about them as she knew them and this gives me another view of how someone who didn't know them sees it. Great book.

Good but.... Hard to get past the first 2 parts. Yet, parts 3 and 4 are amazing works and keep you reading. A very good true crime read.

Definitely worthwhile read. This really gets into the minds of the criminals more than I thought it would. Very awesome read.

Decent. Not great but not horrible.

Truman Copote's "In Cold Blood". Capotes description of details in this book provide a visual realism for the reader! A true masterpiece.

Exceptional. Awesome read in true Capote prose. I can't understand the criticisms about the wordiness. It's how Capote writes & necessary to portray the story with detail & sensitivity to the content. I couldn't put it down. A definite must read!

In Cold Blood. Awesome read! Loved the movie as well!

Excellent research. The research and the detail that was in this book before the age of computers is amazing

Required for school, slow and boring. Not my cup of tea

Not a 5 star book!. A lot of boring and useless information throughout the whole thing; especially towards the end, a lot of it was very pointless. :(

Best crime book ever written?. I have read “In Cold Blood” twice. First, in the early seventies, when I could not put it down and read it in one sitting and now in 2022. It has lost none of its punch. Capote’s portrayal of western Kansas in the fifties and his objective look into the motives (or lack thereof) of the murderers is captivating. I believe it is the best crime book ever written.

Great Book and Fairly Appealing. In Cold Blood should be a 4 starred novel. When reading through a book, I tend to slowly read what is interesting to me. This book has had me read at a crawling pace multiple times to understand the content in detail. In Cold Blood has made me remember why reading books can be sometimes interesting. It also makes me want to read more of the book to see what happens. Once I got to the middle, the book took a turn and made me feel like these guys are kind of ‘average Joes’ that wanted to do something different. At the end, I felt somewhat sympathetic for them; I wanted to do more for proper justice. The book purposefully does not want to reach every audience that exists, but it can be read by nearly anyone interested in reading nonfiction novels.

Of a Time. A beautifully-written slog that is unsatisfying and far from thrilling. Innovative for the 60s and tiresome in 2022.

The first of the true crime genre.. Reads like prose. Capturing an horrific murder in small town America. A true classic. Read it for college, now reading it for real.

Capote. Best true crime ever.(and the first written in novel form).

The Great American Novel. Truman Capote's masterful recounting of the murder of a Kansas farm family lives up to its enduring reputation. It's literary fiction, it's fact, it's gritty crime reportage all combined to make a great read and a timeless classic.

GOOD. A very good read. It has two typos, that the publisher has refused to fix as of this moment.

Phenomenal. Probably the best true crime story ever written. An absolute work of art. One of my top twenty all time favorite books. Trumans masterpiece.

An American Treasure. Beautifully written

Agony and ecstasy. The movie CAPOTE drew me to this excellent read. The portrayal of the ability of people to kill other people, whether criminals or the state, was masterfully conveyed, EXCEPT FOR THE E-VERSION WHICH REPEATED PAGES!!! I DO NOT KNOW HOW EACH SECTION ENDED!!! This includes the very end of the book.....not good enough, guys...

Great art. This is a thoroughly gripping work which holds the readers attention throughout, and not for prurient reasons, but because he takes you into a world where we are invited to look at human beings that have done and do terrible things, yet remain human.
