Carrie by Stephen King Book Summary

Stephen King's legendary debut, the bestselling smash hit that put him on the map as one of America's favorite writers

"Gory and horrifying. . . . You can't put it down." —Chicago Tribune

Unpopular at school and subjected to her mother's religious fanaticism at home, Carrie White does not have it easy. But while she may be picked on by her classmates, she has a gift she's kept secret since she was a little girl: she can move things with her mind. Doors lock. Candles fall. Her ability has been both a power and a problem. And when she finds herself the recipient of a sudden act of kindness, Carrie feels like she's finally been given a chance to be normal. She hopes that the nightmare of her classmates' vicious taunts is over . . . but an unexpected and cruel prank turns her gift into a weapon of horror so destructive that the town may never recover.

Terrific. This is Stephen King's best novel by far. I have never been so immersed with the character in a Stephen King novel. If this had been my first Stephen King novel I would have read every other Stephen King novel in search for the same feeling. This book was absolutely astounding and unforgettable. No one has ever scared me so much as Mrs. White. Long live the King of horror.

Throwback gold. I’d seen the movie but never read this particular King book. A delightful way to spend a rainy afternoon in sunny Florida. Highly recommend the book even if you’ve seen the movie...way better.

A let down. I'm not sure how to describe this book. It wasn't the worst thing I've read, but it wasn't the best either. Carrie is not something I would usually read, but I wanted to see the movie, so I committed myself to reading the book first. All of your feelings for Carrie are never fully determined. At first you pity her and then she makes you sick. The ultimate reason for reading a book is to get a reaction. However, I'm not sure I ever got one after reading this. It's such an odd novel with a good plot. My complaints with the novel were the boring news reports. I understand the point of having them, but most of the time I just skimmed through them. Also the ending didn't flow as well as the beginning. I finished Carrie in a day. It's a rather easy read for anyone who can get past the gore. I didn't find it very scary either, so it's very manageable. Over-all I recommend this book to anyone who's bored. I think everyone has to either read or see Carrie once. It's basically a classic.

Carrie. Fantastic read! Very recommended for high school horror fans, you will not be able to put it down! Can’t believe this is King’s first work, it’s absolutely amazing in every way.

Classic. Always a great read.

OMG. This book is soooo good!!!🙌

Great Book!. I couldn't put Carrie down! Great story, great writing, just great! Looking forward to reading more by Stephen King.

Perfect starter horror. Just scary enough to keep you on your toes great character depth and actually a pretty impressive character arch and carries mom is the perfect villain she’s so easy to hate very relatable story

Fantastic!. This book is marvelous! I found it peculiar the way that the author wrote and expressed the feelings and concerns Carrie, particularly, had. It made me reflect on past situations of mine where the knowledge I gained from this book would've been useful.

You will know her name, and her story. I'm auditioning for Carrie in a local production of Carrie the Musical later this year, and decided to read the original novel to get a better idea of her character. WOW. As I read this book, I could feel myself going insane and cracking right along with Carrie. There's nothing like feeling so immersed in a story you forget that you are not actually there! I couldn't put it down! Definite must-read and definite will-always-own!

cool book. i liked the book and it was really interesting, with telekinetic powers and all. Poor Carrie!

I liked the movie better. I realize a review should focus on the book, but since Carrie is one of my all time favorite movies, it was tough to read this book without comparing the two to each other...that said, this is one of those rare instances where I actually enjoyed the movie more than the novel. The book is not bad by any means, I just prefer the movie's versions of the characters, and events (especially the prom, and Carrie and her mother's final confrontation) to the book's. Either way, still a great story and fun read!

Why the audio book like 5x more than this. (Smh). Nmjv

Carrie. Watched all the movie versions, the book is better!

King at his best. Carrie, King's earliest book, is told through flashbacks and news reports, detailing a bullied teenage girl who snaps when she's had enough, and we learn whatever she is, she's not normal. It's a bitter-sweet horror story that reigns classic King.

A solid book.. The book had a really strong beginning, a good middle and the end was alright. I feel like most Stephen King books have a good beginning and middle then the end wanes a little bit, but overall it was a really fun read, I would recommend it.

Carrie. Great novel. However heartbreaking and especially sad at the end. Plenty of tension throughout, and despite its length it proves to have better development than longer novels.

Excellent. Excellent - one of King’s best - short but riveting - wow

Carrie. This book is a really great book this book really made me think about the life of a girl that is picked and teased in high school if u have a real open mind to this book it will make u want to try and stop bulling and not to judge someone

If you liked the movie, you’ll love the book!. When it comes to the film adaptations of Stephen King’s debut novel, I loved the horror classic starring Sissy Spacek and TV movie remake, with Angela Bettis. Still, neither of them can top the book! The revenge scene at the prom is better, and more effective, in the movies; otherwise, the book is a terrifying, tragic tale of high school bullying and its repercussions that’s hard to beat!

Bad. This is stupid mediocre

I would’ve had so much more respect if he would’ve just stopped after this…. After this, it just all started to go downhill. I mean this was a good book, a better movie though, and imagine all the trees we would’ve saved if you would’ve just stopped writing after this.

Good book. This is a good book. It's one of my favorite book.

Awesome. I love this book. It's so intense and I couldn't put it down. I'm also glad that they're making a movie.

A classic. Amazing, well-written book from King. Would definitely recommend for fans of the horror genre or of Kings’ previous work.

Great Read!. Although this novel didn't have the captivating quality of most of King's others, it was still entertaining and the ending will give you chills!

👑Legendary👑. What can I say that hasn’t been said about Stephen King? I may be late to read his first novel, but Im just glad I did because it is a horror masterpiece and the style he uses makes it even better. Just what I love.

Do it, BUY IT!!!!. This book is the best book I have read so far. I love it. I'm reading it for the sending time now and I never get tired of it. Stephen King has created a masterpiece that deserves to be the best book in the world, and I'm 100% serious. If I could choose to read one book for the rest of my life it would be Carrie. I sort of connect to her and feel what she feels in life. I love it. 5 stars!

Bittersweet. I found it way better than any movie depiction. It was very heartbreaking because it reminds me of the bullying I endured as a child into my teen years. I felt relief for her in the very end. Wonderfully written.

Carrie Review. All I have to say for this book is that it is amazing, fantastic and just plain AWESOME!😈

OMG. Really good I read the sample and I really what to read the whole story but I can't

Carrie. Very good read Carrie made me fall in love with her and felt sorry for her.. Between her mom and how she was treated at school no body deserves that... But of course the whole town went down... Karma karma karma.... :)

Carrie. This book was amazing! I couldn't put it down. I recommend this to all who like a little chill while reading.

Skip the Movies.. I can’t totally disparage the movies, especially the original. I, like so many others, enjoyed it very much. But as usual, it omitted so many points that are necessary to the plot and which only the book can reveal. If you are a fan of the movie, do yourself a favor and read the book soon.

Timeless. I found something so unique about this story that, even against my better judgement and fear of the dark, I felt compelled to continue into Carrie's world. I was immediately drawn to her character, her rage. Some people might argue that supernatural elements in stories separate you from the emotion of things, but who could argue against the emotion of that prom night? She is a symbol of the scorned, a boon to the ignored. I can't help but applaud Stephen King for representing the faces at the back of the crowd. A must read.

Loved it. Amazing book.

LOVED this book!. I'm a huge King fan, and this was one of my favorites. Make sure to look up how King's wife Tabitha influenced him to write and finish Carrie. Very cool story.

Horrorfying and sooo good!. I'm reading this book, I'm 7 years old, and it's amazing!!! One of my fav. Novels ever!

Love. I loved this book I read it in less than 3 days my favorite book I have ever read I totally recommend it... You cry, you smile (just a little), but mostly you really understand Carrie, and you feel sorry for her.

Great. Not one of Kings bests but still an amazing read. It is written in a unique way that makes it hard to put the book down. It's a bit short though, about half the size of his books and still the same price
