Good book. This was a good read. That is all

The Enigma of Hyperion + Galactic War + Keats Man Crush. This book is entertaining yet very slow to start. If you enjoyed the first book, it's worth a read to see how everything ends up. There's a lot more action in this book, but the storylines jump very rapidly between characters. I found myself missing the original book, which spent so much more time telling the stories of each individual character.

Superb. A superb ending to an epic sci-fi tale about love, divinity, and our unholy reliance on machine.

Compelling.. Although the first in the series, Hyperion, had better structure and was told better, I liked The Fall of Hyperion more. Its like the reverse of A New Hope and The Empire Stikes Back, in that in the Hyperion Cantos, the horror comes before the hope. I loved the continuing literary alliterations and the exploration of the human spirit through voice. I particularly liked the koans of Ummon, which reminded me of the highly influential Modernist wave of poetry- such as Ezra Pound, with maybe even a snippet of E.E. Cummings. The voice of Ummon also reminded me of the voices of the dolphins from the first Hyperion Cantos. Here I go rambling. Overall, I loved this book and highly recommend it.

First book great, second book terrible. I loved the first book of this series but this book was just awful and ruined the experience of the first novel for me. I gave it a decent chance - reading 1/3 of the book - but I found that most of the time I was bored. Most of what I read seemed to be filler without any interesting content.

The Fall of Hyperion. This is a well constructed narrative, with superbly engaging characters. There are sublime surprises, and wonderful twists that keep the reader bewildered. I would not have the expectation of being as mesmerized as with Hyperion, but the final result is, in fact, more satisfying.

Science fiction always gives me much food for thought... But this book was an interesting look at not just science, future possibilities, AI, but also the role of religion in society and where current trends could take us. It touches on the nature of mankind - are we born good? Is there original sin? The nature of God, theodicy, sacrifice, beauty and poetry. A lot of good conversations with my husband as we read both of the Hyperion novels together...
