Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison Book Summary

NATIONAL BOOK AWARD WINNER • NATIONAL BESTSELLER • In this deeply compelling novel and epic milestone of American literature, a nameless narrator tells his story from the basement lair of the Invisible Man he imagines himself to be.

He describes growing up in a Black community in the South, attending a Negro college from which he is expelled, moving to New York and becoming the chief spokesman of the Harlem branch of "the Brotherhood," before retreating amid violence and confusion.

Originally published in 1952 as the first novel by a then unknown author, it remained on the bestseller list for sixteen weeks and established Ralph Ellison as one of the key writers of the century. The book is a passionate and witty tour de force of style, strongly influenced by T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land, James Joyce, and Dostoevsky.

Read this!!. Absolutely superb prose; a thought-provoking masterpiece

A must-read.. An amazing re-telling of the male black experience from a ax extremely relevant vantage point.

Boring. Boring boring boring every time I pick up this book I literally fall asleep I can barely keep my eyes open I usually love to read but this book made me hate reading I’ve never ever hated a book as much as I hate this book.

Greatest book. There is nothing to say but that this book totally changed my life. Many are afraid to read it because of its life-changing quality but that is why you should read it. It's about finding yourself a lot more than it is about race.

5 Stars. I pray the reader of this becomes a little more visible after reading this amazing masterpiece.

Perfect way to sum things up. New favorite book

Inspiring Book!!!. I read this book about 10 years ago,and this book tells about a person that want to be part of something. The people that's in the group is basically using him,and he's not taking notice, that they are using him, until the end.

Life lessons.. Mr. Ellison pens an incredible masterpiece filled with precise descriptions of everyday life in NYC. He paints the chapters with meticulous detail taking the reader along with his every step. Hidden in plain sight are life lessons from the sage that he is. You will be taken back in time to experience life lessons and histories that still being lived today.

Vital reading. Understanding the historic nature of American racism is vital to understanding how it is still with us.

must read. Straight up

Loved all the way through. Though a drag in the beginning this novel is a reflection of all human's desire to be a part of something. As it picks speed readers might want the "whiny" protagonist to just conform and let things be, but he can't and that's his flaw. We all try to be different but in the end what will we be remembered by or will we be remembered at all. Take this out from ur local library instead of buying it. The frustration of knowin the main character is u will make u regret buying it.

Very boring. It's a story about some guy that whines that he's metaphorically "invisible" that drags on for too long. It would've been way more interesting if he actually was invisible.
