The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas Book Summary

In The Count of Monte Cristo, Alexandre Dumas portrays the terror of a life sabotaged and the depths a man can sink to in pursuit of revenge. Framed as a Bonapartist traitor by a trio of conspirators, Edmond Dantès is confined to life on an island prison. On the edge of madness, his sanity is saved by an elderly prisoner’s stories of a hidden treasure. After a death-defying escape, Dantès vows to find the treasure and with it, bring vengeance to the three men responsible for destroying all he holds dear. But can Dantès bring just retribution without losing his soul?

The Count of Monte Cristo (Alexandre Dumas) Book Reviews

The Count Of Monte ChristoThe last time I read this book is now 56 years ago - and I'm still overwhelmed by the poetic language , so much reflecting the positive way of communication! Though not necessarily a Christian virtue (revenge) I easily could slip back into Edmond Dante's personality - and wished sincerely of having had the means to act on those that betrayed my ideals as he was able to punish those that acted falsely on him! This concludes my heartfelt comment!.Score: 5/5

The best book ever! This novel has everything. Love, hate, loyalty, treachery, deception, manipulation, despair, joy. This delicious writing brings story telling to a high art and keeps it down to earth at the same time. The characters are well developed and human. The descriptions of the persons habits are intricate and wonderful. The evil and blessed aspects equally described give this novel my title, the best book ever..Score: 5/5

The Count of Monte CristoI have read and re-read this book countless times. Dumas paints a portrait of despair, vengeance, love & hope that is so vivid. This story stays with you long after the final page. It should be required reading for all HS students. That's where I first fell in love with Edmond Dantes 40 years ago..Score: 5/5

The Count of Monte ChristoI very much appreciated this work and having read it during my commute in many short segments, I found it very easy to start and stop following the multi faceted story line easily. The author clearly establishes the cultural base which I needed to appreciate the context of the actions of the individuals and perhaps my own in my present context. I found myself highlighting several ideas for further reflection as they appear to be clearly identifying of adaptable truths in any time. Joe Marciano.Score: 5/5

Great readingI read this book when in a 7th grade adv reading class. I loved it then, and over the years never forgot that I loved it. Whenever I had a chance to watch any version of the movie I watched with the 7th grade memory of the book. Now at 43 I have read it again and found that I still regard it as one of the best reads. After waiting so many years to reread the book, I found that I had forgotten so much, that I could not remember the ending. I enjoyed rereading this book with the maturity and understanding as an adult. Now I will reread Jane Eyre (also from that 7th grd reading class).Score: 5/5

Prodigious but LengthyI thoroughly enjoyed The Count of Monte Cristo despite its ungodly length. I understand Dumas was compensated by the page, but his want for money confers to his book a want for brevity. The twists and turns are endless and tantalizing, but chapter upon chapter of build-up makes for a story difficult to stick with for the average reader. Personally, I like a lengthy book just because the end of a good story tends to leave me wanting more; The Count of Monte Cristo puts that somber sense of longing off for as long as possible. If I read about one more person "going pale," however, I think I'll have a stroke and end up just like Noirtier. I also would've liked more satisfying revenge on the antagonists, but now I'm starting to spoil the story. The Count of Monte Cristo is definitely worth reading if you're a soap opera kind of person with a high reading level. It can be unrealistic at points, but so can a soap opera--I think that's a good parallel..Score: 5/5

Best Book I've read in a long time.I would classify The Count of Monte Cristo as one of the best novels written. A must read and worth adding to your library. Some may only think of a sandwich. Alexandre will hit upon all your senses with voracity with an education in human behavior unto itself. I thoroughly enjoyed it's length, story, all the characters, including the time, the language used, and references. It is no wonder they used it in the education system. Nothing like the movie but what novel is? Use your imagination for you will not be dissapointed as it is better than anything you watch on TV. In the end, you will be left to ponder the next steps. If you are a romantic, make it so. I only wish I had read this a long time ago. Enjoy and do not be afraid of it's length..Score: 5/5

Must Read!!Longest book I've ever read but definitely one of the best. What made the book so long is the background of characters, for Instance Bertuccio or Haidee, wherein as you go along you'll realize that it actually makes sense to include them. When Edmond Dantes became a count it was so interesting how he studied his villains that every move ended up as checkmate. This is a story about vengeance, dirty politics, love, and forgiveness. Some of you might think this version is too long, but just to let you know every page is worth reading, don't settle for the abridged version or you'll miss all the great scoop!.Score: 5/5
