The Land of Painted Caves (with Bonus Content) by Jean M. Auel Book Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In this, the extraordinary conclusion of the ice-age epic series, Earth’s Children®, Ayla, Jondalar, and their infant daughter, Jonayla, are living with the Zelandonii in the Ninth Cave. Ayla has been chosen as an acolyte to a spiritual leader and begins arduous training tasks.

Whatever obstacles she faces, Ayla finds inventive ways to lessen the difficulties of daily life, searching for wild edibles to make meals and experimenting with techniques to ease the long journeys the Zelandonii must take while honing her skills as a healer and a leader. And there are the Sacred Caves that Ayla’s mentor takes her to see. They are filled with remarkable paintings of mammoths, lions, and bears, and their mystical aura at times overwhelms Ayla.

But all the time Ayla has spent in training rituals has caused Jondalar to drift away from her. The rituals themselves bring her close to death, but through them Ayla gains A Gift of Knowledge so important that it will change her world.

The Land of Painted Caves. Just didn’t want it to end. Please tell me you’re working on another extension!! Have read all of the Earth Children series. The wait was torture. So happy I decided to reread the Clan of the Cave Bear. Discovered the Land of the painted caves. What a wonderful surprise.

Must see video of the cave!. I must say, there was much of the book that was a disappointment. What enhances the book is to watch The Cave of Forgotten Dreams, that is an independent film recently on video. This is an award winning story of THE EXACT CAVE. Re-reading that (small) part of the book after seeing the movie really gave me an appreciation for the skill of the artists.

Has shaped my world!. I started reading The Earth's Children Series when I was in high school and have continued to be a fan ever since. It shaped my world and desires to originally become a homeopathic doctor, and then later to study anthropology in college and graduate with a degree in it. Thank you, Ms. Auel for your research and writing. I appreciate and love every book you've written and look forward to your future writings!!! Fondly, Michael Sigelman

Great conclusion!. I wish there was another one: number seven.

Will fill time. The Clan series is fun and sometimes informative. The last couple in the series have gotten really repetitious. Even the wording of the "romance novel" scenes starts to repeat like Ms. Auel had a pile of stock cards somewhere and chose to insert them. Also, the typos are annoying, even distracting. The books are definitely still worth reading. I guess there will have to be another with the Luke warm ending of the last in the series.

OK but not as good as the beginning of the series. The author seems to have run out of steam on the story.

Boring. Same old, same old. As boring as "Plains of Passage".

Ayla's adventures continue. Well written continuation of Ayla and her family. Interesting take on where the idea of family comes from. I didn't want the book to end and I hope there will be more.....

Lived up to my high expectations. ...and exceeded them. Another well written addition to the Earth's Children series.

Land of the Painted Caves. Wonderful conclusion to Jean Auel's series. I love the drama and the details. You feel like you can see France several million years ago. the descriptions are amazing, you could map the caves out. Do not want to give away anything, but I enjoyed meeting some characters again. Lovely.

Land of the painted caves has the taste of Jean Auel's first book in many ways.. Having read the entire series from Ms Auel, I have found each book has it's own savory flavor. She researched many things prior to writing each of her books, and it shows. I think many have different aspects of things that they liked, for myself, I am drawn, like the central character we know as Ayla, to the why, what and how people used back then, in their day to day life, from medicinal and spiritual life, hunting, gathering food, caring for families, and how life including animals as family members might have started. I find I would recommend the series to any one interested in a good read. With this Ms. Auel's final book in the series she again returned to basics of how life might of been lived back then, including who people might of evolved as new discoveries and ideas were found. Jean Auel Series. Today I finished the final book in her series and know that Jean is working on the 7th as there is still a lot more story to tell. Ayla's journey as a "First", daughter Jonayla's rise to greatness and Jondular's journey taking on responsibility of Lamalar's family in payment of his debt. There are two things I am hoping Jean does not bring into her next book: repeating past stories that have been repeated and repeated throughout books in the past. We remember and it's not necessary to keep reminding us. We got it! Secondly, going on and on for pages and pages with describing the same thing. To be more clear -- describing the caves. There were too many caves with not much difference between them, and yet we had to endure pages and pages of same descriptions. All in all, I loved the entire series. The ultimate read for me is to learn so much while being thoroughly entertained. Great work!!!

The Land of the Painted Caves. Fabulous! Jean Auel has done it again!! So sad that this is last book in the series... : (

Weakest in the series. I have read them all and enjoyed them all before this. The series could have done without LOPC. The end is ok. But it should not have been preceded with 700 pages of caveman soap opera. I literally had to force myself ahead in reading this book until the last eighth of the book. I get that the painted caves are cool, but each cave was was merely an uneventful episode in a story headed nowhere. I could have enjoyed this book more if it were half as long. And now, at the end of the series, I have a kind of bad taste in my mouth. it's like the last bite of the apple had a worm...

Enthralling series!. I started reading The Earths Children series in 1987, and each book delivered a new and captivating insight into Ayla's world. This book was no different. Auel managed to bring the characters full circle, revealing in them all the essential human strengths and frailties that have endeared them to me throughout the each installment. Artfully written. One of those series that you're glad to revisit over and over again through the years...great book! Thanks Jean :D

Jean M. Auel - Children of the Earth Series. Jean's series of books are the most entertaining and most mind-expanding material one can hope for. I immerse myself in her stories and characters each time I read and re-read them. Jean and her team have truly given us a remarkable and valued gift. I wish there were more to follow.

The Land of Painted Caves. This book is page after page of describing caves. There is little to no plot. I have read 3 of the author's books and I was very disappointed with this read. I recommend you pass on reading this one.

The Land of Painted Caves. Don't waste your money. I have read all of this series and loved it up until now. This book was tedious and boring with a capital B ! Endless travelogue in excruciating detail through cave after cave made up three quarters of the book. The rest was review and a very small amount of interesting story line.So disappointing!

Skip to the end.. The retelling in almost the same words of landscape from the previous 5 books, the endless detailed descriptions of painted cave after cave and separation again because of jealousy but on Ayla’s part this time and not one contact with the Clan that had been implied throughout the previous 5 gave me nothing but disappointment and the urge to be done which had me skipping to the end of each chapter and finally to the end of the book. If there’s another I’m not sure I’d read it .

The Land of Painted Caves. She does it every time. I'm not surprised, but I am thrilled, as always, to read about Ayla's adventures. JA has the most delicious way of making me feel related to the family of Earth's children. It's exciting, sometimes scary, never boring, and ultimately satisfying. I just love her work. In many ways it has changed my life in the way I view other cultures, and has taught me to appreciate the differences, as well as the similarities. Lisa Gallego Stockton, California

Land of the painted caves. I am a big fan of this series and waited a long time for this book to come out but I was really disappointed with it. It was very long, drawn out and very repetitive! It could have been about 300 pages shorter.

The Saga Does Not Continue.,,. TORTUROUS to read! Loved the series, had to finish this last book but it was painful.

Karen. So disappointing - I was a huge fan of the earlier books and this pales in comparison. Only a handful of pages were worthy of the earlier work. And the ending... Come on that is all that you could come up with???

The Land of Painted Caves. What a disappointment. Page after page of repetitive details about cave paintings, the uses of cattails, and endless walking about. Not until the last section was there a real plot and action.

Bad editing. I have read the entire Earth's Children series and this by far was the most repetitive and excessively long book of the series. The only reason I finished it was because I felt I had to since I had purchased it. There were countless mistakes (Ayla tells the wolf to stay at the cave entrance, but 5 pages later Wolf is next to her) and at points I thought that if she wrote one more time that someone was surprised by Ayla's accent I would throw my iPad across the room. This book should have been edited down by at least 200 pages! Arrrgh!!!! What kills me the most is the story didn't even begin until Part 2. Seriously, she doesn't need to rehash the first 5 books in 600 iPad pages. A good editor would have taken care of that. Ms. Auel did excellent research, has a good story line and ideas, but she really didn't need to waste that much of my time.

The Land of Painted Caves. The entire Clan of the Cave Bear series is wonderful. Each novel is skillfully written and keeps you intrigued while reading. I have truly enjoyed this series and wonder if another book is being written. I would love to continue reading about Ayla and Jondalar and their families. These novels are a must read!!

Something’s Missing. SPOILER WARNING! Another AMAZING book but five books have paved the way for Ayla to play the role of ambassador to the Clan. There were early talks of trading with the Clan. What happened? She went on this long journey, one which even cut through Clan territory evidently, but not a single interaction?! I feel like I’ve been waiting for Ayla to be reunited with the Clan, though likely not her own cave, for 5 books! And if this is the last book, that means we will never get to see that happen! PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE write us one more book and bring the story full circle!

The Land of Painted Caves. Repeat of all the previous books. Very much needs new material. Nothing new whatsoever!

Undecided. I found myself skipping paragraphs. Too much detail and repetition. But......I did enjoy the book and would like to see the saga continue.

Ok. I love all of the earth' children series, but this was my least favorite book. 80% of the book is describing what the paintings in the cave look like, 10% is more traveling, which leaves 10% of actual story. Definitely NOT an ending. I sincerely hope there will be another book.

Save your money. I loved Auel's other books but this was just horrible. This is only the second book I've not been able to finish! I couldn't stomach the writing any more. I wish I never spent the $ for the book. Could have used it to buy a better book! Don't waste your $!

Land of the Painted Caves. This is the sixth and unfortunately the last of the Earth Children series! I became completely engrossed and lost in every one of the novels, loved them! Not only the unforgettable saga of a truly amazing, strong, emotional, woman, but the incredible detail of the hunting and gathering, and use of every part of animal and plant, just amazing! I actually wanted to live then, briefly :) well Done

Land of Painted Caves. After waiting so long for this book, I was very disappointed. The first two parts were very tedious and repetitive and boring. Part three, though, was what saved the book.

The land of painted caves. Good book, but too little story line development. Previous books had less repetition.

Land of the Painted Caves. As others have said, I found the book to be repetitive and truly dragged in some spots. A couple of times it felt like it wasn't even the same author who wrote the earlier books. I would have liked to see more character development and a larger focus on all the characters I had come to love. Overall it was ok.

The Land of Painted Caves. I'm sad that this is the last book of the Clan of the Cave Bear series. I have read the other 5 three or more times and still enjoy them all. Though this last one was really good I had hope that Jean Auel would have Let Alya meet up with her son again just so she could tell him how much she loved him and why she had to leave him.

Paid by the word?. What a disappointment. We didn't need hundreds of pages describing every animal on every cave wall of Europe, thanks. We didn't need to have the Mother's Song repeated at least a dozen times. We didn't need a travelogue with few genuinely interesting conflicts. We didn't need a lengthy rehash of prior novels, sometimes several times. The repetition, lack of passion, and monotony made this a poor read. I marshaled on hoping for more, but no. Right to the end, Auel let us down. I doubt I'll read the next one.

Not worth it. I bought this book when borders was going out of business. I love reading clan of the cave bear and the others, this one was a tough one to read.

The Land of Painted caves. This is not Jeans best writing. Some parts of it is as if some one else wrote it. Her first five books were fantastic and I loved them all equally. The ending of this book was not much of an ending. Just leaves you hanging as if there should be another book to be written. A disappointment of many years following this series and waiting for her next book to come out. It's not worth the money to buy this one. One disappointed fan indeed.

The land of painted caves. Certainly a good read despite all the over repetition, and I do mean a lot of repetition that could have been said only once or twice for effect and reference. Could have contained more new content and I certainly would have liked to see the birth of her son and his relationship if any to Durc. Although I certainly understood the metaphor between the two brothers and that they don't necessarily meet, there is the possibility for a storyline none the less that could be intriguing and carry the story a little more further along in the future. Wish that she would write another since the characters are so interesting. I never tire of the potential explanations, real or fictional, of how we invented things and advanced our civilization. Overall a fun read as the others that carries you away to our distant past. Loved it and want more, please.

Excellent read , but very repetitive !. Great saga , very detailed characters. I have read all of the books in the series and found myself there along side with the people . I don't think that every few pages we need to be reminded how Ayla lost her family or got the scars from the Cave Lion!

The children of the earth seris. I am so wonderfully thankful for Jean Auel's unbelievable knowledge and ability to tell a story that brings you so emotionally connected and sense of yourself to care for characters in a so long ago time on earth that was so alive! Bravo! The hours she spent researching and then telling the story of Ayla are beyond anything I've ever read. You,as a reader, are so vividly taken into this world. It makes you think and question yourself how you relate today with the Great Mother Earth. Always treat The Mother with great respect, dignity and especially above all-Love. You will not be disappointed. Enjoy!

Painted caves. I am Native American, so this was very close to home. the caves and the paintings were very familiar, it took me back to the stories I heard as a child. Some of the journeys that was described in this book was surreal, I felt like I was right there with them. I could probably go on with this, but I will spare you. Just a great book!

Painted caves. The last book was bad. I did not think It could be worse than that but I was wrong. Do not waste your time.

The land of the painted caves. Very repetitive. Spent hundreds of pages repeating the same information over and over. So long and never really went anywhere. Was the worst book in the series.

The Land of Painted Caves. Was very disappointed in this book. I love Auel's books and this fell short. It was so redundant in parts I felt like she was trying to fill pages. No antagonist came into play until the last part of the book. Found this book very boring

The land of painted caves.. Very repetitive , nothing new. Disappointing.

The Land of Painted Caves. I agree with all the previous readers about waiting for this book. I would like to have the book flow with the other 5 books. It was very repetitive which was very disappointing.

The Land Of Painted Caves. My anticipation and excitement for the arrival of this book has far outlasted the enjoyment in the reading. Unfortunately the book was written for those who have not read the rest of the series. The repetitive account of the previous books took up way to much of the plot in the 1748 pages of material. Often times I found myself flipping through thinking "read it, read it, read it" and turning pages. While the story of Ayla and Jondolar is enthralling more development in the character of Jonayala and her peers would have been beneficial. Good for Mrs. Auel in that she left me wanting another book. I really hope she plans to enlighten us with Ayla's otherworldly travels and the connection with her "sons". My disappointment at the end of this book was that there were no enticements for her next book. I waited almost ten years for this one and feel there is soooo much left to the story. I hope that I will get to read it with my daughter as I have introduced her to the series.

I'd like to see yet another book!. This one tied up a lot of loose ends but it brought up even more questions which need answered. Plus we need to see Ayla promoted to First.
