Robopocalypse by Daniel H. Wilson Book Summary

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • This terrifying tale of humanity’s desperate stand against a robot uprising is the most entertaining sci-fi thriller in years. • “Terrific, page-turning fun.” —Stephen King, Entertainment Weekly

Not far into our future, the dazzling technology that runs our world turns against us. Controlled by a childlike—yet massively powerful—artificial intelligence known as Archos, the global network of machines on which our world has grown dependent suddenly becomes an implacable, deadly foe. At Zero Hour—the moment the robots attack—the human race is almost annihilated, but as its scattered remnants regroup, humanity for the first time unites in a determined effort to fight back. This is the oral history of that conflict, told by an international cast of survivors who experienced this long and bloody confrontation with the machines. Brilliantly conceived and amazingly detailed, Robopocalypse is an action-packed epic with chilling implications about the real technology that surrounds us.

Decent. Some good ideas but you get the feeling the book could have been written better by someone else. Still a decent book that I managed to finish.

Nice Read. I like the way the book was laid out as a collection of short stories. Although I generally like more explanation of how advanced tech works I found the stories interesting enough to keep me from caring about exactly what kind of power source could possibly deliver enough energy to run the military robots.

Pick it up at your own risk. Just like many of the other reviews (that are accurate) say: I picked this book "up" and couldnt put it down. Read it in 3 days even though I had work and Christmas in the mean time. It became a priority to finish. Very excited for the movie!

Robopocalypse. A great read. Thoroughly entertaining and thought provoking I highly recommend this book.

Robopocalypse. Great reading!!!! To be living in my future is amazing!!!

Absolutely brilliant. Loved this book. Finished it in a few days because I just could not put it down it was so good. Wished the book would go on forever.

Really good read. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes technology. It really makes you think about it and how it could end up happening. The way the author wrote the book was very detailed and it was exciting to read. I was up for hours at night reading this. I would finish the chapter on my iPad then think " I wonder what's going to happen next". Before I knew it the time was like 12-1 in the morning. Worth the time and money. You really can not go wrong with this read. I really like the way the book is structured also. Nothing much more to say about this book. Just buy it, I think most people would love it.

Loved it. I must say that I absolutely loved this book, it nothing but non stop action from start to finish. I would recommend this book to anyone who's into sci fi books, it's a must read.

Great Scifi: Ready for movie. Gripping tale that sweeps you along from beginning to end. I will look for more from this author.

Starts off great, ends a bit slow. Reading the sample book on iBooks sold me on buying it. The book remains very exciting through the majority of the story but starts to level off and become a little slow. Which is odd because the machines get more sinister towards the end but it seems like the author didn't leverage the machines adapted evil creations as well as he could. I little disappointing at the end, but I DON'T regret the read. It was entertaining.

Must read for science fiction fans. Get ready to be glued to your iPad

Robopocalypse. Enjoyed the book, but wish he would have done a bit more research about Alaska. There are no trees on the North Slope of Alaska and in the summer all the snow goes away and temps can reach 70+F

Great. Great book, Hope they make a movie.

Must read!!. 👍👍👍👍great book!

Meh.... Someone described this book along the lines of World War Z and not gonna lie, kinda disappointed. Don't get me wrong, solid book, but kinda glazed over. Made me feel like the war only revolved around certain people, when something like that would involve so much more...not very descriptive, but eh, still pretty good

An interesting easy read. I came across Daniel Wilson by looking in the suggestions section of some of my favorite authors and I've got to say that he was a pretty good find. I've had this book laying around for a while and finally got around to reading it. Since I knew from the start that 2 years before this book was published it had already been bought to be made into a Hollywood big budget blockbuster (with the help of Steven S. & Dreamworks), I could tell why the layout and read style of the novel was the way it is seeming like a screenplay. This may turn a few readers away. Some spots seem as thought little details and descriptions could be missing and should have been written......... Blah blah blah. It's crap I say!! THIS BOOK IS AWSEOME!!! if you have any type of imagination your brain while paint an awesome picture in your head of what the author was portraying. Knowing that this book is being made into a movie by some of the most successful, innovative and creative individuals that have ever worked in film and have a great track record for years and years, makes me think the movie will be awesome and does have a chance if done right, to be better then movies like 'I Robot', the 'Terminator' films, and films like 'Bladerunner' and 'Minority Report'. Bottom line is that the book is a good read that worth picking up.......... atleast until the movie hits theaters in 2013 or 2014.

Amazing and very thought provoking. It's like war of the worlds meets terminator.

Ehhh. Certainly not the best I've ever read. I had such high hopes for this book..I now wish that I had waited until I found it in paperback in a doctors office.

Fun read. The break neck pace of this book drew me in from the start. I like the concept. In reality, it is not too far off the mark of a possible reality- if off at all. I read the book to my 12 year old, editing some of the profanity just to save face but the words are necessary to the characters. The ending rounds out well. You can probably bet this is destine for the silver screen as these technological scenarios gain steam with popular culture and the media. Hats off to the author.

Great read. Excellent story that predates some of the technology slowing coming to use today and the march toward improving and increasing AI abilities. Well told story.

Gooood!. Everything I like meshed together and given to me in one big tasty spoonful.

Robopocalype: nothing new or interesting inside. As a long time science fiction fan, I jumped on this book when I read a review in the New York Times book section. But I am sorely disappointed by what I've just finished reading. There is really nothing new here. It's a hodge-pudge mish mash of shallowly conceived robots and characters. The format of the story is the heart of its undoing: snippets of tales found in a computerized archive ( created by the robots!) and assembled by a nearly non-sentient human. This format prevents any of the characters from meeting & interacting or even having dialog together for most of the book. By the time the characters coalesce together, it is far too late to salvage any interest in them. Most of the characters talk idiot-speak; dumb-grunt style military pseudo-English that just isn't very fun to read. I suppose that some 12 to 15 year old boys might enjoy meaningless dialogue richly spiked with the f-word, but this educated 60-year-old found it just plain annoying. Even the attempts at English are poorly an ungrammatically written; I found myself wondering at times if the entire book was written in idiot-speak or was I still in the mind of one of the characters. The sad part is that there is nothing in this book to engage your attention, no ideas to ponder, no richness of a future world to Spark your imagination. But there could have been; it just didn't happen. I could hardly wait for it to end so I could read something interesting next. Do yourself a favo skip this Novelpocalypse.

Utterly Amazing. One of the best works of science fiction that I have read within the last 10 years. If you can't decide whether or not to buy this epic tale I beg you to give it a shot!

Eh....... If you like a fragmented storyline that almost comes together, this is for you.

Holy crap!. I honestly have no words to explain how much I loved this book! The imagery is haunting and the logic is sound... Seriously. "Wow" doesn't even come close to what I want to say. Absolutely amazing from the first page to the very last!!! I'd give it 10 stars out of 5 if I could.

Robopocalypse. This book was exciting from the beginning to the end. Very well written. A great read of what could be a not so fictional future.

Fantastic. I loved this book. Such a great way to tell a fantastically fascinating story.

Robopocalypse. This book/story is so good. It kept me up late nights and made me take a pause about anything with having to do with smart phone/robotic/mechanical technology and how our society is becoming more depended on it. I thought that reading this novel had me thinking otherwise about modern technology and that possibly it can have a bad day and run amoke.I think as human beings we need to keep our independace from all of this techno crap. Something is bound to happen soon or later. Very well thought of.

Surprisingly good!. I haven't read any science fiction in years. I loved this novel for the characters development. You love them, hate them, root for them. Extremely well written and satisfying.

Fabulous. I am a huge sci-fi guy and this one of my favorites

Robopocalypse. Very enjoyable! Quite the page turner!

Robopacalypse. Good book not really for young kids

Fantastic!. A novel about a robot uprising that only a man with a PhD in Robotics could tell. This book may have a silly title but within its pages lies the human spirit tested by a war with a truly inhuman enemy. It belongs in your library.

Demaney's Rating. Good book!

Crapsandwich. First it is a blatant ripoff of world war z only with robots but without any cultural or political insight whatsoever. The artists concept of armaggedon via robots is a laughable imitation of the 1980's "B" movie Maximum Overdrive. The writer cannot keep straight from what point of view he is telling the story. He will jump from 1st person to 3rd person within the same paragraph which leads me to believe that the only editing this book probably had was a microsoft spell checker. Some of the characters in this book are memorable and could have made the book more interesting, but the author abandons them very quickly without giving them a chance to evolve. I do not recommend this book to read, however I do recommend that an actual talented author take the concept of a robotic World War Z and turn it into something more interesting than this drivel. However I do not wish to be too harsh the author should continue to write, just get a better editor, someone who can show you and teach you about all the mistakes you are making.

Story review. First person perspective can be a good way to tell a story, but not in this case. Telling it from multiple first person perspectives was not well executed. The characters were not believable nor were their actions and conversations. The Japanese man and his scenario was the most interesting part. The story had potential, but this was outweighed by bad editing and poor character development.

A. Freaking. MAZING!!!!!. The raving reviews for this book are 100% accurate. I was enthralled and could not put it down! The writing is amazing and draws you into a world that doesn't seem too far away. If you're wondering whether or not to buy this book-take it from a true book snob-money well spent. I'm looking forward to reading more from Daniel Wilson!

Robopocalypse. JRE brought me here

Bummer.. It was clear within 30-40 pages that this guy can't write. Terrible dialogue for cartoonish characters in a poorly plotted, ill-conceived waste of time and money.

Worst. Book. Ever.. Trite hackneyed writing with non-existent character or plot development that read like a series of plot summaries from every "Terminator"-type story. One of the few books I have ever read where I literally felt like I had been held up and robbed. The only reason it gets one star is the review won't permit me to select zero.

Reads Like a Movie. If you're looking for a fast fun read about robots and an apocalypse this is it. It does have a cliche romantic fairy tale ending and plot, but the characters are really fun and vivid. My favorite was the Japanese guy.

Great mix of hard science fiction and characterization. The set of vignettes that the author weaves together engages you and keeps you turning pages until way past when you should put it down and go to bed.

Amateur writing. The premise of the book is attractive, but the style is a turn-off. Short, disjointed chapters make up the book, which prevent a flow from developing. However, it is the conclusion at the end of each chapter that is really irritating. Quite simply, it is difficult to believe that the author has a Ph.D., not because of the technical content, but because of the elementary overall style. Sorry.

Decent, but wasted potential. What I thought would be a realistic take on what would happen if robots did rebel(it is in fact written by a university roboticist) became extremely far-fetched given the reasonably realistic tone of the novel. It would be similar to irobot all of a sudden having a twist that robots can speak to animals. Bad analogy probably but I had that kind of "huh?" reaction to a big plot element half way through that was way too outlandish to seem probable or believable. Another problem I had was the cheesy and overly macho dialogue on the battle field that would make the expendables look like Shakespeare.

Script treatment?. This is not so much a novel as it is a script treatment. Poorly written underdeveloped characters, a disjointed narrative structure that doesn't hold up to logic, and an unsatisfying conclusion. I seriously think this is just bait for a Hollywood adaptation. Read some Asimov instead.

Big fan of some of the concepts. Characters could have been developed more. Felt a bit like world war z. But with that said I liked the book. 7 out of 10

Captivating. Snatches you up from the start and doesn't let go. A wonderful metaphor of life and humanity.

It had me right from the beginning. It's the exact kind of storyline I love in a book. I hope there's a second.

Robopocalypse. A real page turner but the end felt anticlimactic hence 4 out of 5 stars.

I actually finished this one. I have to say that I have never finished a book. I've read and finished many of technical books, IBM Redbooks. I first came across Robogenesis when I was away on business, and stopped by a Barnes and Nobles. I was immediately hooked, only to realize that I was reading the sequel. I quickly found an employee to request a search for Robopocalypse - sold out. A few hours later, I'm back at the hotel room and downloaded this book onto my hand iPad. Since reading the first chapter, I knew I had to finish this book. The descriptions that the author used in this book made it feel real. Almost every chapter gave me goosebumps and talking to myself. I would've liked more dialog between Archo's and 9 Oh Two about its origins, but great book all the way!

Loved it!!. Couldn't put it down...was fantastic!! Can't wait for his new book this summer!

Robopocalyse. Great read, reminds of the robot version of World War Z with a similar style to the structure. It will be interesting to see how Spielberg approaches the movie. There are many interesting sequences that scream something big and cinematic. I hope they keep the darker elements of the story and don't try to dumb it down for a larger audience. Will have to read Amped at some point. Well done.
