Area 51 by Annie Jacobsen Book Summary

This "compellingly hard-hitting" bestseller from a Pulitzer Prize finalist gives readers the complete untold story of the top-secret military base for the first time (New York Times).

It is the most famous military installation in the world. And it doesn't exist. Located a mere seventy-five miles outside of Las Vegas in Nevada's desert, the base has never been acknowledged by the U.S. government — but Area 51 has captivated imaginations for decades.

Myths and hypotheses about Area 51 have long abounded, thanks to the intense secrecy enveloping it. Some claim it is home to aliens, underground tunnel systems, and nuclear facilities. Others believe that the lunar landing itself was filmed there. The prevalence of these rumors stems from the fact that no credible insider has ever divulged the truth about his time inside the base. Until now.

Annie Jacobsen had exclusive access to nineteen men who served the base proudly and secretly for decades and are now aged 75-92, and unprecedented access to fifty-five additional military and intelligence personnel, scientists, pilots, and engineers linked to the secret base, thirty-two of whom lived and worked there for extended periods. In Area 51, Jacobsen shows us what has really gone on in the Nevada desert, from testing nuclear weapons to building super-secret, supersonic jets to pursuing the War on Terror.

This is the first book based on interviews with eye witnesses to Area 51 history, which makes it the seminal work on the subject. Filled with formerly classified information that has never been accurately decoded for the public, Area 51 weaves the mysterious activities of the top-secret base into a gripping narrative, showing that facts are often more fantastic than fiction, especially when the distinction is almost impossible to make.

Amazing. The book really had my attention serving in the military since 1976 seen a lot but never had an idea that Area 51 existed very good references for research this is just the beginning thank you CSM Minix

A51- Neat topic, abrupt ending. This book provides more context and insight about this mysterious piece of real estate than most of us have ever gotten. You are left with the feeling that a lot of dedicated people were striving to protect our country, many through dangerous and noble deeds; others with darker methods. The book ends rather abruptly and the reader can't help but know these pages only scratch the surface.

Excellent. A must read for any spook loving American. Gives great detail of facts...I'll say it again gives great detail of facts not science fiction

Annie, you have a need to know..... That you pronounced the word "Nevada" wrong throughout your book. I have lived in Nevada for about 25 years, so I know how the name of our State is supposed to be pronounced. I think your book was very good. The topic is interesting. You obviously spent a lot of time researching it. But I do not understand how you could have been so engrossed in this topic and have encountered the word Nevada thousands of times through countless hours of interviews and walk away from it all still mispronouncing the word. This is not a minor problem, for it is very annoying. Assuming you interviewed any deeply embedded Nevadans, they may have been less forthcoming with you. Please, for the sake of any future research you may conduct or books you may narrate, pronounce the word the way we do. You know how we say Nevada. I wish you the best of luck and success in the future.

AMAZING BOOK. All the top secret aircraft that was tested at Area 51 was truly unprecedented! The real story of the Roswell incident is truly unbelievable!

I'm exhausted. this is a very interesting, detailed and frightening look at those who claim to be protecting us. This book demonstrates thet human nature is a characteristic of all humans, and no nation is immune to the excesses made possible by the combination of fear, ambition and modern science.

Awesome Read. I loved this book. It was well written and very captivating. This book has me wanting to read more about the subject.

A great read. Area 51 gives readers a good perspective on what really takes place in this mysterious world. It shoots down all the tin foil hat garbage about UFOs and tells a story of brilliant, driven people who developed some amazing aircraft. It also brings light on the dark and sordid history of the adjacent Nevada Test Site and the Department of Energy. That is the real dark secret of the territory lumped (incorrectly) as Area 51. I could not put this book down!

Pleasantly Suprise:. I was hesitant to buy this book based on some of the reviews. Am I glad I did. A fascinating journey through the history of top secret aviation projects mistaken for UFO's. A history of military conflicts, secrets and stories all relating back to Area 51. I highly recommend it.

A Thorough Glimpse Into the Greatest Secret. This was a great read front to back and explored the many interwoven roads that have lead to and through Area 51 since it’s establishment. Only more info will come but never will we know all and that’s the biggest piece of lore that draws readers to this topic.

Area 51. A great read...!!!

Interesting Read. Very interesting and informative book. Would recommend to anyone interested in the early years of black projects.

Great read!. Great read and look into the history of the Nevada Test Site, US nuke testing following WW2 and the CIA's development of the U-2 and A-12 spy planes!

Good until the last chapter. As a young woman, I read this book purely for educational purposes to learn more about a part of our American History that lacks clarity and definition. I found the book to be insightful with research and narrative histories collected by the author as collective, informative and interesting readings. The best part of this book are the number of stories accumulated into one place about one place. My only issue was the final chapter. How do you end a book about Area 51 when most of your research remains classified? Don't guess or assume, nor leap to conclusions. The questions surrounding Roswell or aliens will remain until more information is declassified with proof to solve these mysteries in history.

Mr. Love it!

Loved it. I absolutely loved this book. I wish the EG&G guy had spilled his guts a little more.

Good only for beginners. This book really let me down, especially after the review on NPR. I enjoy reading about the development of high technology and some of the most interesting achievements have been kept secret for obvious reasons. Some interesting facts are unearthed in this book but to me it is just a pulp designed to grab the attention of readers who are new to the subject matter. Hints are not so subtly dropped in each chapter about an enormous conspiracy that was conducted at Area 51. And when you get to it at the end you are left baffled. Did Jacobsen get duped by an insider or was this simply a case of greedy publishers trying to make a buck off the gullible public? I'm glad I got the electronic version so my friends don't see it on my shelf.

la basura liberal con mentiras completas. más tonterías de un liberal idiota, que pasa más tiempo arrojando hechos sesgo a continuación de la escritura.

Excellent history book!. More than aliens it is an excellent journey through the history of the CIA and the other hidden organizations of the US Government.

Amazing!. Amazing book, well documented. A must read.

Good Historical Review.... ..but missing the meat. Very "Right Stuff"-ian in its details of the history of Area 51 and surrounding areas. Some are fascinating, others seem rather tangential and rambling. But interesting in most parts. The biggest problem with this book though is that its biggest revelation doesn't seem to make any sense and seems oddly placed and under-explained in an otherwise seemingly seriously researched work. Perhaps the author is hoping to jolt various others to talking but the claim seems barely credible.

Great read!!. I couldn't put this book down. I have always been fascinated with the SR71 blackbird and this book has a lot of background information on the aircraft.

Couldn't put it down until done reading. The history revealed in this book will blow you away.

Excellent!. This was a great read and could not put it down! Also a great summary of events after WWII and the Cold War that links A51. The Roswell Incident explainations are a new twist in the story of so called "aliens". I have been waiting for a non-fiction book on A51, and this was it! I hope more info is shared before the generation that supported A51 passes away forever; I'm glad the author summarized perspectives from all those people still alive today. Thank you!

Rip off. no photos. iBooks won't deliver photos with their books (unless you pay an added fee). Boo. Some books don't even allow that!! Rrrrrrrgggg!

Must read about Area 51. From Soviet subterfuge to nuclear testing to modern reconnaissance plus so much more, this book is clearly the most honest and through living history of Area 51. A must read

Area 51. Fascinating beyond words. A satisfactory read.

Area 51. I was not expecting a great book, I was pleasantly surprised. This is not All about aliens and ufo's but more about the wildly secret aircraft and the people and organizations that created and built them. I highly recomend it if your into aircraft or technology and history. Loved it!

Disappointing. After I bought and downloaded the book I can't open it!!!!!!!!

Very interesting but flying saucer explanation silly. This is an excellent read, I was constantly stopping and looking at Area 51 on Google Earth to locate the places mentioned. This is a scholarly and sober analysis of what's been going on at Area 51 and 52 and the Nevada Test Range. However at the end of the book she explains the entire story involving the flying saucers and that was so improbable and ridiculous I actually burst out laughing. I won't spoil it for you, but you'll laugh when you read her utterly nonsensical explanation. Flying saucers aside, this is a must read.

Clearly this has been kept secret for a reason.. Well thanks for publishing this book, so now all the terrorists can find out America's classified defense research and testing.

Superb!. Really interesting. Area 51 isn't really so such a secret anymore but detailing about the events which we all know vaguely about was very interesting and aliens being within till this day isn't completely impossible. One of the things this book didn't touch on was alien technology used by us and others to make all this possible. I'd recommend you read 'Disctech' here on the iBookstore to understand more about that. When you hear and read about what the eye witnesses say and saw it does all match up!

Good stuff. Very well researched. Interesting and engaging.

Bruin28. A great read. Very interesting and factual.

Area 51.. For the most part I thought the book was well researched & entertaining. The part I find unbelievable is her Russian flying saucer crash at Roswell with Mengele's experimental children piloting the craft.

Compelling but flawed. 95% of this book is a compelling and apparently well-researched look at the history of America's classified stealth program (from the U-2 to the Reaper drone) and its nuclear testing program. It covers a lot of technical and historical ground while still being an interesting read (I finished it in a day). Unfortunately, it is marred by what seems to be a hastily-added section on a (non-alien) Roswell theory that is not only conjecture but also doesn't stand up to logical analysis. Had the author simply presented the known facts about Roswell and left it at that I would have rated the book 5 stars. As it stands, however, the Roswell section (which comes at the end of the book) seems to have been added just to boost sales. (Incidentally, the book is a lot shorter than it seems...the last 35% or so is references and photos.)

. Great book!

Fascinating read. I absolutely recommend this book to anybody interested in military history and history in general. It might upset the conspiracy theorists, but it provides a much more plausible yet equally fascinating and disturbing explanation of the activities at Area 51 and the Roswell incident in particular. I also appreciated the unflinching exploration of the human cost in the pursuit of technological superiority. The questions it raises about the ethics of covert operations and scientific experimentation on unwitting subjects can be quite chilling. Just an excellent book all around with years' worth of documented references and government documents for someone who wants to do their own research.

Waste of. time and money. If your are looking for real insights this is not the place. Purchased even after reading the poor reviews. Shame on me!

I love this book. Ok I have always been in love with Area 51 and almost my whole life I have believed that their were aliens because of what people say. But because of this book I learned that aliens are NOT in area 51 I HAVE LIVED IN NEVADA FOR YEARS and I have always wanted to go to area 51. Because it seems so intriguing.

Area 51. Interesting and apparently well researched. Then comes the Roswell/Soviet part that ruins the perception of objectivity. Obviously B.S!

Agreed, compelling, but flawed. I found that there were many minor misstatements that really made be groan about what how it was described. Some things were, like usual, over dramatized and seemed to be there just to satisfy the people that were only marginally interested in such a book. Lots of historical background that often was un-nessessary. One example of a groaner is where the author describes Collin's crash cause as the pitot tube saying something to the effect of: It failed due to the adverse effects of the moisturizer components" More than likely, the moister came from the CLOUD and froze inside the tube. Anyway, just a groaner and really doesn't take away from the book other than there are many more like that. Real sleeper of a book for anyone that is an aviation or area 51 enthusiast. I'll still give it 3 stars because it is not terrible, but it doesn't leave you asking for more.

Awesome!. This book has some great personal stories and new information to incorporate into those conspiracy theories.

Area 51. Absolutely mind-boggling, a truly revoloutionary book everybody should read.

Don't buy?. Let me tell you why? It talks about only U-2 and A-12 in a detail that nobody likes. Very less about UFO. It believe they don't exist. It's not what you looking for. Boring details from 1940 to 1968. Never go after that like writer don't know what happened after 1970.

Very good read. Lots of info I've never heard before.

Loved every minute!. This was a fantastic weekend read. As the consumer of this book, I would like to extend my deep appreciation and thanks to the author, and her sources, for their work.

Review. This was a very well done book, true or not, I just don't know. I still belive this is just the surface of a larger cover up.
