Had potential. I liked it... but I didn't love it. I wish it could have been better written, more dragged out. It was a good 300-something pages, but it still felt very short lived and fast paced. The romance was meek, nothing touched on it, she fell in love with someone who smiled at her. Not much interaction was given between Elisa and her newfound love. She craved love from a king who said he only wanted a friend, completely ignoring the one moment he was decisive. She became a hero to many people who, for some reason, wholeheartedly trusted her and let her become the leader to their revolution. It wasn't even a revolution. They were just protecting their land from the enemies. She all of a sudden went from being coddled to this rising hero that God has chosen, who has learned from the hardships of being kidnapped and almost being on the front lines, a lot of details that were skipped over each time the author chose to say "a few months have passed". I wanted more. I craved more detail about the lore, the history of the civilizations that were living. I wanted her to prove she was more of a scholar than anything. Instead, I was left unfulfilled. I will read the rest of the trilogy to simply complete the story, but I won't be dying for the books.

Pretty good first novel. I liked the themes in this book, it addresses body image issues, self esteem, coming into your own, loss, love, preserving and developing your sense of sense. With a female character surprising herself at how she can show up through her actions not only for others but for herself as well.

Excellent in many ways. The writing is superb: wonderful imagery, voice, and style. The landscape is richly described and is its own character in a way. Reading this story transports the reader to distinct places with their own textures, colors, smells, temperatures, moods, and sounds. The protagonist is multi-faceted and dynamic. She has self-talk that is believable and compelling. The reader feels for her--her insecurities, her triumphs, her simple forging ahead as best she can, and her sense of destiny. Other characters are likewise complex, and those that meet unkind fates leave their impression on the reader. The plot develops enticingly, with tragedy, romance, betrayal, action, magic, and cunning. Most appreciated: there are no distracting errors. Great editing! I look forward to reading the next volume.

Excellent female fantasy novel. The book is a fast paced tale that whirls through this land of desert wonder.

Good story but a bit rushed. The story plot is pretty interesting, but the writing style needs some smoothing out as it seems a bit rough on occasions. There is very little description of the surroundings, places, personas, characters, mimic, body language, background stories etc. which makes it sometimes feel like the author was in a rush to get to the next point. Even big events like a battle or the death of a character are quickly dealt with and the story moves on. Again, the story plot is quite interesting and if the author dedicates a bit more time and details to the world the characters live in, I believe it would be even more interesting, cohesive and smooth.

Girl of Fire and Thorns. I did not expect this book to be as good as it was. This is a fast paced easy high fantasy read, perfect for those finishing Sarah J. Maas and need a breath of something equally exciting.

Well Done. I found Elisa's character very well done. She had her own personality and her own drive and she was very much her own person. It gave me a reason and made it easy to relate to the character and understand her plight. The world is wonderfully sculpted making it easy to imagine and place myself there. The ending made me sad, but I think that's my own issues with monarchies. I look forward to A CROWN OF EMBERS.

Not a fan.. I will complement the author with being able to come up with the whole world within the book. BUT. Found my self skipping pages because the only thing i could find myself enjoying was dialogue but then that ended up falling flat as well. The constant references to her weight got annoying. The whole concept of having a stone in her navel like a troll doll seemed off to. Nothing was exciting. I’m about 67% into it and can’t find myself wanting to finish.

Amazing Read!. When I started reading I wasn't sure I was going to like this book, but as I continued I started to get so hooked by Elisa's character, and the way Rae Carson quotes Elisa's outward conversation followed by her thoughts which totally makes you respect and sympathize with her. I just started this morning between things I had to do and haven't been able to put this down until now - namely to write a very rare review for a book that has totally surprised me!

Ended too soon. Really good book couldn't put it down but I just felt it ended too soon
