The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty Book Summary

"A horror story for all midnights." — The Boston Globe

Inspired by the shockingly true story of a child’s demonic possession in the 1940s, William Peter Blatty's iconic novel focuses on Regan, the eleven-year-old daughter of a movie actress residing in Washington, D.C. When sweet Regan's behavior turns sinister, a small group of overwhelmed yet determined individuals take it upon themselves to rescue the poor girl from her unspeakable fate. Timeless and terrifying, The Exorcist is a story that has gripped the public zeitgeist for more than half a century.

Originally published in 1971, it remains one of the most controversial novels ever written. A literary phenomenon soon after its release, it spent fifty-seven weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, seventeen consecutively at number one. It also became a wildly popular motion picture, garnering ten Academy Award nominations. On the opening day of the film, lines of fans stretched around city blocks. In Chicago, frustrated moviegoers used a battering ram to gain entry through the double side doors of a theater. In Kansas City, police used tear gas to disperse an impatient crowd who tried to force their way into a cinema. The three major television networks carried footage of these events, and CBS’s Walter Cronkite devoted almost ten minutes to the story. The Exorcist was, and is, more than just a novel and a film: it is a true landmark of American culture. . . and a reflection of our innermost fears.

Purposefully raw and profane, The Exorcist continues to engross and disturb readers. It remains an unforgettable reading experience that will continue to shock and frighten new generations of readers.

Always a great read. I go back to this book about every decade or so, starting with a worn paperback belonging to my parents (I was probably too young for that first read). Then again in my early 20's, then 30's via a library checkout. And then today, on the eve of my 43rd birthday, via an iBooks download. Still beautifully written and I realize just how much better, and more enjoyable, this story is to read, vs. the film attempt. The writing is so alive and crisp, to the point that I see my own movie in my head and imagine how those scenes of extended dialogue from Regan might look in a longer, 100% faithful adaptation. The story no longer scares me as it once did (I just read it alone, in bed, in a darkened room...something I never would've imagined doing on those first three readings). Now, I just read it for the story, words and the amazing pictures they paint. This is a great story. Creepy, tense, sad and oddly funny at times (some of the things coming out of Regan's possessed mouth, you can't help but chuckle). The demon, talking about his portrayal of Puck in the junior class play or eagerly sharing his knowledge of South American geography always gets a smile out of me. And the passages where he's in Burke Dennings mode...priceless. Anyway, a solid, entertaining read. Forget the movie and try to read this "fresh" if you can. Looking forward to my re-visit in another 10 or so years...

Better than the movie.. The imagination is more powerful than the screen.

Outstanding!!. Such a good book! Written intelligently, far scarier than the movie. I literally did not put it down until I was finished! This novel put Blatty near the top of my list of fav authors!

impresive!!!!!!!. It is almost imposible for me to write a review, on anything i read or watch, i will only do it in exeptions, either because the material was really awfull and i need to warn others of it, or because of its exceptional content. This book is by far one of the best books iv ever read! the wording and dialoge is superb. i had overlooked this book many times, thinking that it would ruined the movie for me, but it only just enhanced the film. GREAT GREAT NOVEL. LOVED IT!!!!!!!

Psychological Treat. I love every second spent reading this. Worth every Kobo spent. Highly recommended.

The novel you've been waiting for...without the wait.. Take it from a guy who used to timidly say "No" to scary movies and novels and now can't stay away from them. I too saw the movie before reading the book, and the former sort of gave a lot away. Still, the dark atmosphere and the grim detail kept me coming back for more. Plus, the timing couldn't have been more perfect. I read the book during a time when I struggled with myself and my faith. I could totally relate to Father Karras and almost everything he was going through. And, not surprisingly I'll bet, the story truly began for me when the exorcism did. Now, if you are convinced that you can bare to imagine the horror and the drama, with no weak constitution, remember: you get NO COMMERCIALS.

The Exorcist. Enjoyed the movie, enjoyed the book even more. Seems like it was written yesterday, not 40 plus years ago.

The Exerocist. This phone did not age well. It is about 80% great. The 20% that is mediocre is disturbingly problematic for the entire piece.

Help. Is this worth it's money?

Riveting!. Immensely entertaining, addictive and riveting. The kind of book that you cannot put down and find yourself wanting for more. I remember watching the film as a much too young child and being horrified by the storyline. Finally reading the book some 30 years later the story more than holds up. It’s terrifying, believable and so authentically detailed, you are immersed in the story and shell-shocked by the nature of the beast, feeling the pain and anguish along with the characters. Bravo!

Amazing!!!. I can finally go to sleep now! What a great book! I loved it!

The Exorcist. A fun read! Almost identical to the film. As a fan of the genre I had a great time revisiting the story.

This novel. …from beginning to end….simply fantastic!

Disturbing. Saw the screen version at too young an age, remains the scariest film I have ever seen. But, the book proves that the mind's eye is a far better screenwriter. Can't unread, can't unsee. If you like to be disturbed, read on.

Excellent. The back stories not in the movie are worth the read.

Phenomenal Novel. I have not been able to stop reading.

Better than the movie.... This book is awesome and keeps you enthralled the entire time. I recommend it to everyone.

The Exorcist. Better than the film, and just as frightening and thought-provoking.

Powerful and all-engrossing. A very powerful book that gets you down deep. It feels real and draws you in and tosses you about in a turbulent storm of emotion, horror, and suspense broken with moments of real tenderness. The story is heartbreaking, horrific, enervating, and inspiring all in one. Truly worthy of its status as a classic!

Entertaining and Thought-Provoking. I am in my 60s and has never read this book. I found it hard to believe that so many people found the book so disturbing. I found it to be a clever story with quirky characters - by no means frightening. But I would definitely recommend this novel.

Great!. It is a great read. Very entertaining!

The Exorcist. I read this book when it first came out. I highly recommend it. The writing is excellent and told in a way that you felt you were in that room during the exorcism. I give it 5 stars.

Great. Absolutely terrifying. Much more haunting than the movie.

Excellent!!. Fantastic read as good or better than the movie!

BIG FAN OF MOVIE. The book gives greater detail to what they showed on the 1973 classic film. It gave me a clearer understanding of the movie and why they decided to keep some scenes in it and take some out. This is a fantastic book very chilling I would recommend it to those who love physiological thrillers.

Wonderful. Wonderfully written; Blatty knows what he is doing. Fair warning though, this book is not for the faint of heart. Nonetheless, it is a testament about the triumph of faith and God’s mysterious yet benevolent providence rather than spinning heads and shaking beds.

Excellent.. One of the best books i’ve read in a while. So much better than the movie. The ending really got an emotional response from me. Highly recommend.

Great book. Absolutely terrifying, and intriguing book. Finished it within two days, couldn’t put it down.

A Curious Case Study. This book reads more like a case study than a work of fiction. Only rarely does the writer’s voice switch to soaring art and metaphors etc. Normally he sounds like a reporter simply relaying the events and this works as a counterbalance to the abnormal occurrences in the story. Nonetheless the story is engaging and powerful. No satisfaction or neat resolutions are sought so don’t expect any. This is the story of the war between faith and reason, rational thinking and religion with no clear winner.

Disturbing. I saw The Exorcist movie before reading the book and I thought it was the scariest movie I had ever seen. If they were to make a remake of the movie and follow the story in the book, that would be a movie I would not want to see. I could not put it down. Crazy!!

A classic horror book. for the ages. I remember reading this book shortly after it first came out and had just moved to a new apartment that day. The phone was not connected but on that first night it rang…I was never so scared in my life.
