Steve Jobs Book Reviews

Walter Isaacson

Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson Book Summary

Walter Isaacson’s “enthralling” (The New Yorker) worldwide bestselling biography of Apple cofounder Steve Jobs.

Based on more than forty interviews with Steve Jobs conducted over two years—as well as interviews with more than 100 family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues—Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing.

At a time when America is seeking ways to sustain its innovative edge, Jobs stands as the ultimate icon of inventiveness and applied imagination. He knew that the best way to create value in 21st century was to connect creativity with technology. He built a company where leaps of the imagination were combined with remarkable feats of engineering.

Although Jobs cooperated with the author, he asked for no control over what was written. He put nothing off-limits. He encouraged the people he knew to speak honestly. And Jobs speaks candidly, sometimes brutally so, about the people he worked with and competed against. His friends, foes, and colleagues provide an unvarnished view of the passions, perfectionism, obsessions, artistry, devilry, and compulsion for control that shaped his approach to business and the innovative products that resulted.

Driven by demons, Jobs could drive those around him to fury and despair. But his personality and products were interrelated, just as Apple’s hardware and software tended to be, as if part of an integrated system. His tale is instructive and cautionary, filled with lessons about innovation, character, leadership, and values.

Steve Jobs is the inspiration for the movie of the same name starring Michael Fassbender, Kate Winslet, Seth Rogen, and Jeff Daniels, directed by Danny Boyle with a screenplay by Aaron Sorkin.

Just couldn’t get into it. This book just didn’t do it for me. Seemed like so many cringe moments of Jobs's explosive behavior and didn’t feel like the book was progressing much. Had to put it down only a third into it.

Re-invent The Coffee Shop : By Wake & Bake. Young Innovators dream to create change in the world. Gives you new energy and outlook in the work. Great work of literature.

Really good tale of job's life. Really good tale of job's life

Best book on Apple Books. Worth

Disappointing. The pictures are small and not pinchable. You'll see transcripts of audio and video tapes instead of links to actually view the content described. Major disappointment in a book that should have had technological enhancements the man himself created that are so readily available.

Here’s to the ones crazy enough to Change the world. What an amazing read. This book is a must read! Learning all the things of someone who influenced the world around you is just inspiring.

This is a classic. ❤️

Great read. Just a great read dissecting a great but divided genius.

Edge of my seat. This book had me up for hours after putting it down for the night.

Amazing looking into the life of a Genius !. This book inspired me to do great things in this world. It shows the life of a genius both good and bad and how to maneuver around obstacles in life. It trains you to think long term and to not focus on the everyday mundane things that life throws at us but to focus on long term and ultimately you will prevail. Great read. Thanks !!!

A genius.. very inspiring. Excellent book. A well written look at the person and company who changed our world. A inspirational real life account of how Steve Jobs took Apple from a small garage in a residential neighborhood to one of the world’s most valuable companies. A must read for all.

i. Nspiring

I ended up speechless.. Really good and interesting book. Is nice to see how Jobs behaved with his employees and even more fascinating how he manifested his vision on how CEOs should roll their business strategies. Learnt a lot by him reading this book.

Love the book. Probably one of the best favorite biographies I have read. Do not stop Isaacson keep the biographies rolling!

"Oh wow, oh wow, oh wow". Best book ever

An Ode To A Visionary. The book is like the man himself - you will glorify it, villify it, revere it, hate it or admire it, but you will always remember it. Thank you, Steve.

Leadership Defined. This book is not about a great man (unless you consider it to be about Paul Jobs). It is a boring rehash of Apple history and reminder that life is not fair. Merit is earned in how it shows us what great leadership entails.

The story of a successful man!. Amazing

Inspiring. Read on my iPhone and iPad, as he would have wanted. Inspiring to learn more about the man who helped to shape how so many use and look at technology.

For the rebels. Wow truly beautiful book very well recommended never knew Steve Jobs after reading this book he’s a legend

Jobs. hjklcan!t use dictation My hands don’t work well. I spent time w/Einstein when young. Now I’ll read that. T/U Walter.

Really enjoyed the book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I felt like it gave me a good insight to the man who’s ideas, business tactics, and personality molded some of the coolest and useful devices ever. I found many of the stories interesting, funny and sometimes disturbing which made for a great read. So sad he left so young.

Steve Jobs. I wish that I had met and known him. By the end of this book I feel as though I did. It depicted all sides of a man whose thought process is unlike most. I highly recommend it, particularly to those who aspire to creating things and building a company.

iBooks review of Steve Jobs. I bought this book when it came out in 2011 using iBooks. Since all of the updates it has disappeared from the records. The book was excellent but this has also happened to music purchased in iTunes. Wth is going on?

Engrossing... and apparently accurate. It was fantastic to bounce between the competing and opposing portions of Job’s personality.

So he was crazy but genius. And smelled bad. Ok. What a weirdo. Definitely will go down in history but man. I don’t think I could stand to be around him

Outstanding. A fantastic biography of a formidable man who helped shape the modern economy.

20,000th Review. I normally don’t write reviews, but when I saw here were 19,999 reviews on this book, I just had to be 20,000. I added the digital collection to my library because it seems appropriate. I am impressed that this book is often updated with content, corrections or other minor edits. Very cool. It’s an interesting, in-depth read from what feels like (even if it isn’t) an unbiased point of view about the genius that made Apple tick. I feel the stories are accurate, fair and well-written. Certainly worth a couple of read-throughs. Very cool.

Life Changing. An incredible tribute to one of the few to truly change the course of history and life as we know.

RIP Steve Jobs. Steve Jobs, despite your tragic death, we will always remember you. You and Woz changed the world and our lives. Thank you.🥺🥺🥺

Excellent but what about Linux?. Excellent book but one glaring omission. MacOS became popular because many engineers could have a Unix laptop that works for them at their company. It would have been cool to have Steve perspective on Unix and Linux.

Best Biography Ever. My dad gave me this book about Steve Jobs and I’m very interested In Steve and I can tell you this book is amazing because it tells you all about Steve Jobs and his lifetime. Its definitely worth it to get this book.

Jobs fan warts and all. Loved an insiders view of the amazing man.

Touching..... And saddening. This book starts of with Steve's beginning. And through the entire book you get to understand, and know a genius. That at the ending you jus stir inside with so much emotion of the lost of such an intriguing person. Who cares so much for people that was often misquoted on his actions.

To do list. Read this book

Afrah. Thought provoking. A tribute to a man who changed the world for good. Goes to show that we are all humans and misfits in our own right.

Two thumbs up. I couldn’t put the book down.

Asstonishing. To have been alive in this world at the same time that this genius was around is inspiring. This is fantastically written and does provoke thought. I could not recommend this book enough.

Soulful Book. Words is incapable of describing my emtions right now. I only finished the introduction of this book about how the author layed Steve Bio foundation with a narration....

Extraordinary. Review - Nov 9, 2012: I purchased this book, not knowing what a journey it contained, being that I wanted to better understand the mindset of this man. I found it amazing. Through sheer force of will and tenacity, this man among men accomplished what only a handful before him had. I don't books as often as I have in the past, but this is definitely worth your time. ———————————— Update - May 15, 2022: So weird that it is nearly 10 years since I reviewed this book, but I am yet again working my way through it. I originally had read it on my iPhone 4S, and am now reading it on my iPhone 12 Pro Max and it is SO weird. It feels like when you find and meet up with an old girlfriend from years ago and catching up on everything you both have had happen. I am pleased to say that much like before, I find myself in awe of the man that, with amazing teams, ushered in changes to a number of industries (though at times he was ruthless and rubbed people the wrong way). Walter Isaacson’s work is still as satisfying a read now as it was when released. I highly recommend this book. You will NOT be disappointed.

Must Read. Well Written

Brilliant and Inspirational. Jobs was not a man taken lightly, and many criticize his actions and behaviors, but this book dives deep into the root of why he was the man he was, and how that changed what the world was into what it is today.

Read on iPhone & iPad. This man touched more people in voluntary exchanges than anyone in history and continues to in his death. Amazing.

Beautiful biography. Such a fascinating person and such a beautifully written biography. At the end, you feel like you’ve lost a close friend.

No words. No words

Thumps Up!. Great book

Wow. As Inspiring as the subject

Fine book. Fine book.

No Words…. Loved it

Steve Jobs. Steve Jobs a true perfectionist, incredible and full of incite! A must reed for all leaders, executives and students whether of business, sciences, engineering or just life! Bravo Gary Chahinian Broker/Owner RE/MAX Diamond Realty Inc. Toronto, Canada

Good book!. Steve seems more of human to me after reading this

Amazing. It was a great book and now I understand why Apple products are the best. It's a shame Steve had to die.

Amazing book!. An amazing book about an absolute genius !

Intriguing!!!. Blows me away!!!

insanely Great. his legacy will continue

Awesome. Awesome. Loved it.

Great book. Perfectly crafted into the life of Steve jobs and well written it sucks that it had to end because that’s how much I enjoyed reading it

10/10. At least 10 stars. I am sad that there will never be a part 2!!!

Steve jobs. The most insightful, inspiring and enjoyable book I have ever read,(and I have read hundreds!). A real eye opener and confirmation of what a huge loss to humanity Steve Jobs' passing is. Warmest sympathies to all that knew and loved him.

Way too expensive "9 99 boycott". How can the publisher justify charging $16.99 when the Amazon version is $9.99. iBooks needs to be more competitive on price or I'll just buy a kindle. Love apple everything but this is ridiculous.

Inspiring. What a great read on my Mac, iPhone, and iPad.

Too good. In a word: Inspiring.

Awesome story. Very interesting man. Glad I never worked for/with him! If you are a technically-minded person, you will love this story.

Insightful. Very good book. Many repetitions in the last chapters. Could have been shorter. I recommend the book to anyone, even those who don't like Apple products.

The Rev. Overall, this is a well written book with a few flaws. Issacson left no doubt about Job's cutting demeanor. In fact, that issue got repeated so often that it became boring. There were too many unanswered questions. There was nothing about his final hours, the magnitude of the public response, Did he take care of those formerly trashed financially? I'm particularly thinking of Lisa's mother Chrisanne, his biological mother, and people who helped him along the way. He was cheap. What did he do with his money? Was the new headquarters building ever started? Why was the word Asperger's used only once? why was not. Wozniak on the Board of Directors? Why is not Laurene on the Board?

Now I Get It. It's pretty sad that it took me this book to understand what Apple, or should I say what Steve was fighting for when controlling the hardware and the software of every products created by Apple. He was saying that if the product does not work as intended, It's my fault. You can't blame anybody else then us. What a great individual and a great way to stand behind the products that Apple have created. I hope that the company will stand behind this mantra. You just convince me to only by Apple products from now on. Now I get it :) Thanks Steve!

Steve Jobs. Loved the book, but the pics did not come in and several pages did not load on iBook - leaving me frustrated and somewhat frustrated being an Apple fan?

absolute garbage written by a vindictive old man. This is tabloid filth at its worst. It's a journey or discovery of the many qualities that made this man revolutionary, but a painstaking and clearly prejudicial compendium of every little fault and error of a human being. This is truly tabloid filth, and right from the prologue you can tell that Isaacson was clearly embittered that this young whippersnapper was financially successful, beloved by legions of admirers around world, and literally changed the way that young and old people alike experienced the world around them for the better, while Isaacson himself had to be contented with chronicling the lives of men who actually accomplished something. The final straw was this young barefoot hippie surpassing him. Jobs entrusted Isaacson with his legacy and it was the worst mistake he made since entrusting Apple to Sculley. If you want to point out the biggest mistakes in Jobs' life, trusting Isaacson is right up there.

Steve jobs. Fascinating book about a brilliant and complex man who was compelling and yet surprisingly heartless at times. It made me curious to experience something made by Apple that had all that thought and precision go into it, and voila, I am writing this review on my new iPhone which I love! Thank you Steve.

Steve Jobs. This was a fascinating read which I could not put down. Obviously a visionary of a man and an icon in the tech industry. I could not help but feel for the sacrifices of his family and the successes and failures of a very brilliant and complex mind. Some incredible lessons of what to do and not as an entrepreneur.

Amazing!. An Incredible book about an incredible person!

I have it in the actual book!. I dont have it on my ipad, but i do have it in the non-virtual version. It is very inspiring.

Steve Jobs. Words can’t describe how much I enjoyed this book. Insight into one of humanities most interesting minds of the past century. Thank you Walter.

An amazing look into the genius that was Steve Jobs. Hands down one of the best motivational books I have ever read. Extremely interesting, it makes you appreciate the little things in life as well as the amazing products that we as consumers and business men and women come to expect from apple. A MUST READ

Insightful. This book is insightful, engaging, ands interesting. I would recommend it as a must read. I don't want to give anything away, so i wont go into details. However, one of the Steve's philosophies that i agree with is the fact that companies should never put the money before the customer, it should about making the best product. Also, companies have remember this: if they don't take care of the their customers some other company will. So, innovation and customer service, should be priority.

Wonderfully mesmerizing. Once I started reading this I just couldn't put it down. Much like watching him during the Apple keynotes, Steve's personality, charm and charisma are captivating and this biography captures that elusive essence perfectly. As a professional in the creative industry, I can't thank Jobs and Apple enough for their wonderful products. They have enriched my life, connected me with my loved ones and made my 9-5 a joy. I will certainly read this book again and again, it's a marvel of biographical writing.

Steve Jobs. An honest portrayal of a complex man who changed the world. Walter Issacson's book provides insights into how our digital world evolved from the 1980s and why thing we use everyday are the way they are. Excellent read.

Incredible.. We miss you Steve, and this book just makes me miss his work even more. Inspiring to say the least.

French Version Plz.... Everything in the title

Thank you Steve,. This book changed people s lived forever. After the announcement of your death people were amazed by the things you did .thank you and if Apple needs more ideas call me at 7807576346. Thank you-

The best biography I've read. Reading a biography is usually quite painful. Isaacson has written an incredibly good book. He's taken a story many people think they know and done an exceptional amount of homework. The story, in reality, is more than most know: for better and for worse. I really don't like reading biographies and took more than a year to decide to read this one. His crafting of job's story is excellent. I suggest everyone read it whether you want to know more about Jobs or want to know more about one man's vision on how to simplify the crap of most man-machine interfaces. Or if you want to see how to craft a really good bio.

Overall a great book. Overall it was a great book, nice to see the development of Apple and Jobs over the years. A few of the later chapters dragged on, but all in all a good read.

Great book. I don't read often but even so, I found it difficult to put this down. Highly recommended.

Good stuff!!. This goes without saying. All around excellent read. You don't have to be an apple "fan boy" to enjoy this read. Worth every penny.

Steve Jobs Biography. Truly wonderful book. Well written and captivating.

Enlightening. I couldn't understand what all the fuss over Steve jobs was about until I picked up this book and found it nearly impossible to put down....extremely well written and what a fascinating adventurous life Steve jobs offers as the subject matter. Read it you won't be disappointed!

Amazing Book. This book was simply amazing. It totally grasped every aspect of Steve's life properly from his own psychology to how he made Apple into not only into a lifestyle for himself, but for millions of people. I would highly recommend reading this book.

Readers delight. Mr. Isaacson You are a great writer. By the way you develop the story and tying the persons character together throughout his career and life. With respect to Steve, I see much of my behavior in him and know he is coming from but not as excessive. I need to control it more. RIP Steve

A must read for all senior level management people and entrepreneurs.. Anyone who has the ability to put a dent in the universe MUST be a genius! A great read!

Genius!. A great book of an amazing man.

Un des meilleurs livre que vous pouvez lire. Quelle belle histoire. Un must pour tous les adeptes de Apple.

Steve Jobs. Très intéressant. Pour tous ceux qui ont vécu les débuts de l'ère informatique. J'ai adoré.

The best I've read in a long time. Exciting, dangerous, shocking and deeply moving.

Merci Steve. Just like most of this World's GREATs, you had a balancing dark side but it was balance for such an incredible BRIGHT side that it was certainly worth it. This specie thanks you, in an insanely great fashion! MERCI Steve.

Apple and it's Creative Genius!. A fantastic read! A man who's legacy will live on forever. I only wish I could have gone on a walk with him and had a chat...

Wonderful insight. Written wonderfully, that gives you insight to the greatest CEO of my generation.

Good Story of an Interesting Life. Very well written biography. The author packs in a lot of information that give gives us the broad contours of Jobs’ life and career. It is possible to write a biography that has a nasty or sneering tone, and thankfully Isaacson avoids that while not just sugarcoating his story. I’m sure there is lots more to say about Steve Jobs, and that there are many people who had different experiences (positive and negative) with him. But the author has given a good starting point for better understanding the life and times of this interesting and influential contributor to the development of personal computing and more.

Nothing is perfectly. Nothing is perfectly Nothing is exactly This is what everything actually!!!

Good book. Now I know more about Jobs and understand better why Apple products arr so great !
