A Stolen Life by Jaycee Dugard Book Summary

In the summer of 1991 I was a normal kid. I did normal things. I had friends and a mother who loved me. I was just like you. Until the day my life was stolen.

For eighteen years I was a prisoner. I was an object for someone to use and abuse.

For eighteen years I was not allowed to speak my own name. I became a mother and was forced to be a sister. For eighteen years I survived an impossible situation.

On August 26, 2009, I took my name back. My name is Jaycee Lee Dugard. I don’t think of myself as a victim. I survived.

A Stolen Life is my story—in my own words, in my own way, exactly as I remember it.

The pine cone is a symbol that represents the seed of a new beginning for me. To help facilitate new beginnings, with the support of animal-assisted therapy, the J A Y C Foundation provides support and services for the timely treatment of families recovering from abduction and the aftermath of traumatic experiences—families like my own who need to learn how to heal. In addition, the J A Y C Foundation hopes to facilitate awareness in schools about the important need to care for one another.

Our motto is “Just Ask Yourself to . . . Care!”

A portion of my proceeds from this memoir will be donated to The J A Y C Foundation Inc.

Unbelievable. I don't think I'll ever come across a person as strong as Jaycee in my lifetime. It's impossible to set this book down after starting to read it.

A Stolen Life. Amazing. It really shows that we are so resilient, finding strength in even the worst situations.

Jaycee. Lump in throat and tears streaming down my face.......makes a person want to go to every house and every shed, tent or cardboard box and MAKE SURE everyone is safe from bad people, ALWAYS :( you are an amazing lady Jaycee ❤️ I would love to be your friend . Hugs and love, Michele

Wow, Amazing Book!. I finished this book within hours. I couldn't stop reading until the end. Ever since I saw her interview, I really wanted to read her book. I had tears in my eyes a few times. It was very hard to read what she had to go through. This was an amazing book with an extremely beautiful ending.

Bravery enduring the unimaginable. Her harrowing account of her story in her own voice. Others here have complained it's too graphic (I've read worse descriptions in fiction) and that it jumps all over. Remember, this is a woman who had a 4th grade education and relied on television and books to keep her mind sharp. It is also part of her therapy. No one should expect Hemingway or Fitzgerald. Her accounts of the attacks should make you uncomfortable. She was 11 years old, kidnapped, raped, and abused repeatedly by an insane man, and had two children by the time she was 17. I wish her and her girls all the best.

Sad but too graphic. I wanted to hear Jaycee's story but it was so sexually graphic, I couldn't stomach it. It made me physically ill. After a few chapters, I decided that I won't be able to finish this book. I looked he story up on Wikipedia instead.

GREAT BOOK!!!. You'd think an 11 year old girl held captive for 18 years by evil, psychotic people would turn out a little loopy. Jaycee is extremely intelligent and intellectual, not to mention beautiful. She is honest and in her book, sharing the chilling details of what she endured. This book is worth reading!

Powerful. There is parts that are hard to read, where you want to skip through the paragraphs because they are just so horrible you can’t believe it’s true. I admire her strength. I really enjoyed how she still remained to protect her girls in this book, while only sharing her experience in captivity and not speaking about the girls. I think she is a great mother for this any many other reasons. I feel heartbroken that the media is still invading her privacy something she’s waited so long to have. I feel incredibly lucky for my childhood after this read but I also feel happy for Jayce. I feel so proud of the woman she chose to become.

In One Day. That's how long it took me to read this book. I could NOT put it down. This insanely true story is horrific, sad, captivating, inspiring, touching, tender, brutal, and incomprehensible. Minimally, it reminds us of the evil among us as well as the resilience of the human spirit.

True story😬. Great book.

Heart breaking. This is a heartbreaking but eye opening book. I couldn't put it down and my heart broke for her!

Invisible Chains. I wish Jaycee, her daughters and her family the best. I understand those invisible chains. Once a predator gets inside your head, he is able to instill confusion, fear( the kind of fear that is paralyzing), guilt, and many other tools they use to keep you dependent on them and afraid to do or say anything. Glad you are free to live life like you want!

Amazing. This is an amazing read!!! I read it in two and a half days!!

Heart wrenching. The first part of the book is really hard to read because of the details about what happened to this poor girl but I the book as a whole is amazing. This young lady survived something so horrific and I'm inspired by her strength and courage through it all. I hope the rest of her and her girls lives are everything they want and more.

Inspiring...couldn't put it down. This book is beautifully written by a woman who has endured more than I can imagine. I truly hope and pray that She and her girls will have much peace and happiness in the years ahead. Her ability to have a positive attitude and decide to be happy was so inspiring to me.

A stolen life. Very sad book. I can't believe she made thru all 18 years!!! I will do say that her love to her mother could be one of the secrets that kept her alive and strong.. And of course being a mother herself is a another BIG BIG reason! Jaycee... I'm glad you are back... Garridos I hope you both die in jail!! You deserve!!

Great book. This was a wonderful book. Jaycee is such an amazing and strong women! I admire her strength and how positive her outlook on her life is! Truly inspirational!

Resilient. That little girl at age 11 had strength and resilience like no other. So proud to have had a chance to read this, you are inspiring Jaycee

Amazing. What this child had to endure is sick and twisted. The person and mother she has now become is inspiring. Every single person in the world can learn from you.

Recommend. Such an inspiring story. It's amazing how such a beautiful intelligent women came out of a traumatizing situation. I recommend it &i also recommend having a tissue next to you as you read.

Amazing!. Such a heartbreaking, yet thriving story!! I couldn't put it down. Jaycee, you are a truly amazing, strong woman. I hope your (new) life continues to be all that you wished for! Much love!

I was too severely traumatized and fed lies for 13 years. I know a longtime friend of my dads who happened to be a doctor. His name is Larry Nassar. He gave my parents their first DVD player as a Christmas gift in 2001. When I was 1 1/2 my parents thought something was possibly wrong with me. They told that monster. Right after Beethoven Symphony of Fun came out on video and DVD, The Monster (Nassar) started feeding me lies like my parents are not worthy, that I can cheat and get away with it, the Brezner family were my birth parents when they are actually not and he told me for 13 years that my parents had adopted me, etc. He started traumatizing and sexually abusing me until a young woman named Ms. Maggie Nichols told me she was sexually abused for 3-4 years. This changed my mind and made me realize his true intentions. I helped her find a counselor while the police were investigating the Nassar case and if I didn’t help her, that Monster would be a free man and would still be abusing and feeding me lies today. Now that Nassar has his 60 years in prison back in mid 2018 and 40-175 year sentence in prison for abuse back in early 2019, I am free from this evil monster’s lies. Now I worry when I get married and have children that they will be kidnapped and/or sexually abused by someone they trust. I nowadays question if I should trust anyone.

Beautifully written. I couldn't put this book down and I don't normally read. Jaycee, you are such a beautiful and strong woman. I admire your strength. I hope you one day find peace and can fee safe again. Your childhood was ripped from you and I am so sorry that you were the little girl who had to experience such horrible people. The entire world is not horrible. We all love you.

Rising above the unthinkable for survival!. I truly admire Jacyee's strength. Her tremendous determination to survive, and the perception, and intuitiveness of how to interact the her captors to make things as peaceful as possible... This power I believe is indescribable. I wish Jacyee and her family an eternity of love, peace and happiness!

Powerful. This book is such a powerful and slightly disturbing read that shows that there is evil everywhere. She’s such a fighter

A stolen life. Was a great book! God bless Jaycee and her family! ❤️

Thank You. You are are true survivor and so incredibly brave. Bless you and your family! Romans 8:28 ALL THINGS work together

Excellent read. Thank you from r sharing your story with us, you are truly an amazing person and I only hope for the VERY best for you and your family.

Horrific Story, Raw, Well Written but DONT Read. I'm giving this 5 stars even though I haven't finished the book & don't think I can stomach finishing it. 5 stars for being brave enough to write this book, 5 Stars for the story telling however I became physically ill half way through reading this that I simply can't finish it. How this amazing girl had the courage to write about this & survive it is unbelievable. I just can't come to grips with finishing the memoir because it's so raw & heartbreaking.

A must read!. I read this book in 4 days! It was incredible and eye opening. I’ve always been interested in missing children and their stories. This book was beautifully written and I am just so thrilled Jaycee and her daughters are now living life! I wish the best for all of them.

Couldn’t put it down. This book was amazing.

Wow.. I liked it. Very descriptive. An amazing book. If I were you I'd read it!

Amazing.... This book is truly remarkable.

Easy read, not very well written. I thought it could have been better written, lots of repetition, not enough details. Easy read.

Brought to tears. I read this book when it first came out. I was in tears throughout the whole book. Living in the same area where she was held for 18 years is unbelievable. She went through things that most people wouldn't want to know. It is a touching story that she stuck through this with her children. She is a true fighter.

Riveting. I couldn't put this book down. It is absolutely amazing!

Inspirational!. You young lady are a very special person! Jaycee you are an inspiration to a lot of families!! Book was very well written for someone with a 5th grade education. I believe your intelligence and hope is what kept u going for so long. Best of luck to you and your family!!! Just Ask Yourself to Care!!!

Jaycee. Ok I gave this book 5 stars not because I thought it was a good story. I think what happened to her was unspeakably I can't think of any words! I give her the 5 stars plus more, she is truly a strong person mother daughter sister. She is what I would call a real hero, and her mother is also not giving up hope. I am speechless as to say what I read! I am very happy and I don't know why but proud of what they all have accomplished!

Lost for words. She wrote this book so wonderfully. I can't imagine what she had to go through. She's an inspiration. She has no anger towards anyone. She's so positive and up lifting. Beyond happy her and her children and live life to the fullest now

INSPARATIONAL. she is amazing, and her story has touched all of us. best of luck to her and her children for ther rest of thier lives:) makes me grateful for everything i have!

Scary and incerdible. Unbelievable! How strong could be 11 year old. This book made me cry many times... I have 3 girls and one of them is almost 11... This world scares me to death. I'm not sure if after this book I would be able let my kids go to school by themselves?! Jaycee become beautiful women, mom...She is the best one! Thank you for shearing this scary and incredible story!

Amazing story. This book was really an inspiring. The author suffered but still has the will to look beyond her pain. She is a true example of survival and resilience.

Incredible story of perseverance and growth. As I read this book, my jaw dropped over and over again with each new piece of information that Jaycee shared about her captivity. Her strength and wisdom and will to live is incredible. Thank you for sharing your story with the world, Jaycee. 🤍

Great read about an amazing person. Hard to believe somebody could be so grounded and forgiving as this incredibly lady. She comes across as a really good person, from her love of all animals to her incredible reaction to this awful happening. God bless her and her family (including her pets of course!) The book is really well-written with just enough detail to not be disturbing but offer insight into the Stockholm syndrome type event

Excellent!. I'm so proud of her! Thank you for sharing. You are loved. God bless!

She survives!. It's amazing she survived. I must only give it 3 stars however, some of it is just way to graphic. Too painful to read; I had to skip chapters because it was just something my mind didn't want to know. Too shocking. If that was maybe toned down a little...I don't know...I don't know what I expected from this book. God bless her and I thank her for sharing her survival story.

Eye Opening. Makes the reader value life!

A stolen life. I was moved saddened and happy that this woman went through y’all that and still was a good person after the fact hope her and her family are doing great Deeply moving and worth the read I think it took me 3 days if not that to finish it and I read it to my newborn also she loved it too!

Jaycee. For the ones who gave this a three, two or one star. Something is wrong with you. Seriously, get your head checked out. And for the one that wrote, first half scary, second half boring. I would of just gotten this book from a library. You need counseling. I'm sure you also feel the guy deserves to be free too. Done with my rant. Thank you Jaycee. You've inspired millions across the word to stay strong!

Wow. Such a good book & powerful story!

A Stolen Life. I could not put this book down. Jaycee, you did an amazing job of telling your story. I'm sure this could not have been easy for you. The world was a better place on the day you were found again. I wish you nothing but happiness in your future.

Histoire des plus touchantes. Très belle leçon de vie! La vie passe vite et est très précieuse, profitons-en bien.

A stolen Life. She is an inspiration!

Amazing. Really makes you realize the good in your life. That there is always hope, & to never give up. Fair warning though, there are some disturbing details in this book that may leave you staying up at night thinking about it. I would recommend this book for anybody :)

What an amazing book. I would love to read more books about her life

Easy Read, emotional. I enjoyed her way of telling this horrific journey. She added “reflections” after each chapter to explain her now clear-headed/grown up view on the situations she had previously described. You get the story from her coming from her 11,12,13 and so-on self, and then a reflection from her self-aware mind.

Not a great book. I had high expectations for this book and was excited to read it. It was good till about half way in, then found the last half of the book boring and hard to finish due to lack of interest.

My Stolen Life. Excellent book!! This is the first book that I have read in years... I could not put it down.

Will to survive. It is quite remarkable to see such a strong spirit and will to survive. After all, she was only a child when she was taken and forced to endure abuse that would be difficult for most adults to comprehend. I truly hope that sharing her story helps in her recovery. I can't imagine that this was an easy decision. If a small child can survive and continue to grow in what must have felt like a dark and hopeless situation, there are life lessons to be learned by all.

A Stolen Life. She is very brave to have told her story. Very emotional read.

No words are needed.. I don't know what to say. Jaycee, you are a very brave young woman for being able to write this book and for never losing hope! A very good book that I would absolutely recommend to others!

A Stolen life. Excelent! Read it in three sittings.

Amazing!. Great book. Jaycee is an incredible person and her strength and never giving up hope is inspiring.

Excellent book!. So very inspiring and brave to decide to tell your story! You are an amazing person and a great mother!

A Stolen life. This has been an amazing story, Jaycee has been such a strong person has been through so much in her life. My daughter who is 12 wrote her grade 7 bio project on jaycee stolen life, and it inspired me to read Jaycees story. Jaycee you will continue to inspire many more people with you story..

I love you Jaycee. I read this book and thought that it was sick and terrible that a couple would take a girl my age and terrorise her. I love you Jaycee and the things u went through were unbeliveable, I hope u live the rest of your life happy with your family. God bless u Jaycee Lee Dugard. - love Danaca

Amazing!. One of the best books I've ever read! Has taught me a lot and this story will stay with me forever.

A Stolen Life. Jaycee I can't even imagine the things you have gone threw in your life, and how you came out of it a Wonderful Mother, friend and daughter. What that man did to you was just so unbelievable. You came out of it one tough and determined person, and you will Survive and move on, and I commend you for that. God Bless you and your Family!!!

Mme. Cette jeune fille a su nous démontrer un courage à son état le plus pur. Elle mérite tout le bonheur du monde.

Great read! I couldn’t put it down!. I read this in less than 12 hours.. Needless to say I couldn’t put it down. Jaycee’s courage, eloquence, pure positivity and incite-fulness is inspirational to any one. Great read for trauma survivors and caregivers of all sorts!

Breath-taking. I read this book in one day, never have I done that before. Tears roll down my face as I write this. Definitely well-written. I have a new appreciation for life, what an inspiration she is!

Best memoir I've ever read. This is honestly one of the best memoirs I have ever read. The detail she used.. With only a grade 5 education!! Astounds me.. You felt for Jaycee, her pain, her sorrow. It was real, raw and made me cry. I started reading it at 10 tonight and finished at 2:30am .. Literally couldn't put it down! Truly an inspiration!

Wow!. The struggles that Jaycee faced are unimaginable to the average person. And she is absolutely right she does not owe ANYTHING to the Garridos.

Amazing!. I was not sure if I wanted to read this book. I was a coward. I truly feel sick when human kind abuses children, elderly and animals! I am also a mother and a mother hen at that! And to think of what her mother went through is unbearable! I commend her for doing and surviving a parents worse nightmare! JAYCEE'S book is at times sad, frustrating, knowledgeable, gut wrenching, and inspirational! As crazy as it sounds I believe those animals came into her life for a reason. Something bigger than us all was watching over her! I don't know why "she" or anyone else has to be one to endure such horrors from two very demented and evil people! But fact is she did. She did receive two blessings from that ordeal: her daughters! In my opinion the police and parole officers failed her! Hopefully her story will inspire those in that profession to not cut corners or be swayed by the words of any man or woman on parole. I hope that people do not judge any of her actions while in captivity!!! Unless you walk in her shoes or live what she survived you have no right to question anything she did to survive ! The book itself is raw, real and a mixture of emotions . Jaycee is a natural born writer! I hope the two - they don't deserve to be named, rot in hell. What they did is inexcusable, I don't care what doctor will say he was mentally, because if he knew his actions were wrong then the knew exactly what he was doing! I pray Jaycee and her family live out the rest of their lives in peace and always be surrounded by loved ones!

Great Easy Read. Certain topics were hard to stomach; but truly appreciate the rawness of it all. True survivor with the courage to share it with all.

Bravery. This woman’s story is so touching, in spite of her limited formal education she was graced with a deeper intelligence of life and a compassion for the innocence of life. I wish her great success as she moves into a new normal with her family.

Stolen life. Thank you Jaycee for being so courageous and sharing your life experience with readers like me. Your maturity, mothering instincts, and sheer survival skills are what impressed me the most. You were a helpless little girl and yet despite unthinkable circumstances you have become a woman who is taking back her life with courage and determination. I read your book in one day. There were times I had to put it down because of my own emotional reaction but I am so glad I read to the end because you are an inspiration.

Well...... .... Interesting but not a well written book. Hard to follow at times and not what I expected. It's her story though and she can tell it how she wishes. I just wish I didn't pay for it.

A stolen Life by: Jacyee Dugard. I feel honored to have read your book Jayce!. At times to horrific to read, but the strength you have shown is very inspirational..I have no doubt you will be a writer!.. Although it was difficult you were able to transform your words into visuals!..and at times I felt as though I was a fly watching as you narrated your story.. I am in awe at the success you have done and are doing. much love !

Courage. I read this book in one day and could not put it down. A phenomenal young woman who went to Hell and came back. Truly remarkable.

Awesome book. Brave girl

Amazing!. I'm not one to usually read memoirs but after reading a sample in a people magazine and knew I had to read this book. I couldnt put it down! I had to keep reading to see what aweful and horrible things was going to happeb to him next! Ive never hated a "villain" more as much as I hate Phillip!! If only we could do to him what he did to Jaycee. This memoir is an amazing story about hope, and courage!! A definate read!!!

Less than I expected. It feels wrong writing a negative review on such a real and devastating event, but it's impossible to do otherwise. The entire book felt like a journal that stayed very close to the surface. She just didn't get deep about her experience. It had some horrifying details that just made you want to cry, but mostly you read about all the cats she lived with. I actually just skimmed through the last hundred pages or so, hoping to read something inspirational, something life changing, but the pages only got blander and blander. Although this is a story that should be known and understood, i suggest you keep your money and not purchase this book.

Awe.. You make all my life's problems seem insignificant. I am in awe of your strength and courage! I hope the rest of your days on earth are spent in total happiness! You deserve the world! YOU make me believe in humanity. Your ability to overcome impossible odds, and still be hopeful is extraordinary! Thank you for sharing your story <3

AWESOME. Great book great story she is so brave for having the courage to write her story.

A Stolen Life. It's a sad story about depravity and survival but reads like it was written by a 15 year old.

Wow. Amazing book! What a remarkable person she is to have gone through all of that and still stay as strong as she has!

Love it.. Best book ever, so sad yet amazing how a young girl just like me can survive that traumatic effect and impact that caused in her life. Shes beautiful an for someone to do that and not cave in with in 18 years has a lot of guts. Because thats just so inconsiderate for a young girl who had and still has a family and to brain wash her into thinking things that aren't true :( gosh, Your an inspiration girl! And thats coming from a 14 year old girl. Face your fears, stay strong and life will go on!! I love your movie just as much as I love your book!

Great Strength. I am so proud of Jaycee and her family for telling this story. It reminds me NEVER TAKE ANY THING FOR GRANTED. Thanks for your story. Bonnie Flanagan

The Stolen Life. Great book. Read it in a couple days. I don't read often

A Stolen Life. For me, I read this book in one sitting...I could not put it down, some parts were very disturbing to read and made my heart ache. Jaycee...you are an amazing woman!

Awesome!. This book was so amazing!!!!!!!!! It was so touching and sad, I am a young girl and if that happened to me I would hope that I would have the the positive additude and strength Jaycee had! She is truly an inspiration!!!!! I love this book soooooo much and recommend it to anyone!!!! Thank you for sharing your incredible story with us jaycee!!!!!!

Amazing Story. Such an amazing story!

Song. Whenever I hear the song Talking to the Moon by Bruno Mars I think of this book. How they would look at the moon and talk to each other. Jaycee and her mom are amazingly strong women.

A stolen life. Très poignant! Cela nous démontre la force de l'être humain dans l'adversité et la force de l'espoir qu'il ne faut jamais perdre.

Inspirational story!. This book is so honest, heartfelt and brave. Her story is so captivating, yet incredibly devastating. Jaycee's story is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the courage associated to never giving up.

A story that had to be told.. To read this autobiography of a kidnapped young girl who became a mom while imprisoned, I feel so empowered by her strength. Jaycee survived with a will and gusto that was unbreakable. She may have thought for a while she was something less than spectacular, but she is 100% amazing. Intelligence well beyond her years making sure to instill a curriculum for her children to teach them. When she herself only got to gr 5. People tried to say she should have tried harder to get away, she did what she thought was right. She made due, and did a dam good job. She is the ultimate survivor, no one could argue otherwise. To have Jaycee Lee Dugard in this world is a true blessing, she is the single strongest person alive I would have to say. Wonderful read, a truly inspirational life to read about. I am so sorry she had to endure all that she did and I am so glad she opened up and shared her story with the world.

Inspirational. What a truly remarkable woman. A survivor and the epitome of strength. May you and your family be blessed with lifetime of happiness.

God bless Jaycee. Thank you to Jaycee for sharing your story, you are so strong! Truly an inspiration!

AMAZING!!. Absolutely amazing! You are a person of strength and honor! I admire you!! Only amazing things will come from here on in!
