Out of Oz by Gregory Maguire Book Summary

“Maguire’s work is melodic, symphonic, and beautiful; it is dejected and biting and brave. How great that people flock to these magical novels.”
—Los Angeles Times Book Review

Bestselling author Gregory Maguire’s remarkable series, The Wicked Years, comes full circle with this, his fourth and final excursion across a darker, richer, more complex landscape of “the magical land of Oz.” Out of Oz brilliantly reimagines L. Frank Baum’s world over the rainbow as wracked with social unrest—placing Glinda the good witch under house arrest and having the cowardly Lion on the lam from the law as the Emerald City prepares to make war on Munchkinland. Even Dorothy makes a triumphant return in Maguire’s magnificent Oz finale—tying up every loose green end of the series he began with his classic Wicked, the basis for the smash hit Broadway musical.

Perfection. This story is the most fitting end to a book series I've seen in quite some time. The author clearly put a ton of planning to weave together with painstaking detail the previous three books, the musical, and other Ozian lore that came before. The story is in a word sublime.

Out Of Oz. Overall I found this to be very enjoyable and fun to read but at points a little confusing. I thought the end could have been more developed. The world choice was fe nominal and purely great. Love the book but just a bit pricey at $9.99. Overall a great and fun read😄

Good book. Good book but the ending sucked. He rushed it and then it left so many things open. The ending sounded more like an acid drip. I really enjoyed Wicked and Son of a Witch but this was quiet a let down; purely because of the ending.

Amazing!. Worth the wait! An excellent addition to the series!

Out of Oz. Gregory Maguire is a genius with a pencil. His use of words, his turn of phrase is unlike any other author I've read, and that's no small number. Personally, I'd give anything to be able to write like this.

Out of Oz. Don't even try and read this if you have not read the other books. Even if you read them all it is hard to keep up with the story lines. Sometimes very confusing and open... In a word o.k. But lacking.

Cannot wait to read!. I love the series and i can't wait to get it! I think the series is amazing and more people should read it. The next harry potter!

Was it worth waiting for?. Frankly, I'm not so sure. I've read virtually all of McGuire's books, including the entire Wicked series, and truthfully, I was disappointed with how he chose to conclude this series. Entirely too much of the book consists of a narrative of characters merely wandering through Oz. Hundreds of pages of thick description of pointless travel which at times seemed more of a Fodor's of Oz rather than an apt conclusion of a four-book series. McGuire seems to deliberately avoid offering the reader any satisfaction. He reintroduces characters and concepts from the earlier books just to then suddenly change course from what would otherwise be an interesting and memorable moment. Instead, he will then toss the reader something abstract or overly descriptive in order to avoid what could be a worthwhile plot point. His characters, who undergo years of tribulations together, seem to be left without any connections whatsoever. Friendship, loyalty, appreciation for a fellow Ozian simply doesn't exist. Nobody remotely seems to like one another, or have any regard for the history that McGuire has woven for them. With the conclusion of any series, you would expect a touch of sentimentality. It's wholly absent from this book. The book seems to acknowledge that the entire series was a waste of time. If you find yourself very interested in Ozian politics, for some reason, enjoy this final book in the series, but if you were looking for gratification for plowing through three books of 'maybes' and 'what ifs', you are not going to find it here.

"Out of Oz" made me want to be. It took me a long, long time to finish this book, and that I did so is more a credit to my own persistence than anything the writer did. I can't tell you how many books I read in between the time I first started this and now, when I've finally finished it, but...a whole other book series is in there, so that should say something on the matter. "Wicked" was an enjoyable, thought-provoking romp through Oz. "Out of Oz" was a like an early-morning, sub-zero shuffling through Oz whilst bearing the effects of a cold. I generally cannot bear having my time wasted for me; I want some choice in the matter. This book was not an entire disappointment. I made the choice to waste my time with it, but I wouldn't wish such a drain on time on anyone else. Start with "Wicked" and end there. You'll be more satisfied, and you won't have wasted any time. The other books are just okay. You don't need them, or they you. But, journey into "Out of Oz", and...well, I warned you.

A great ending to a great series. This has been my favorite book series throughout the years, and I was definitely not disappointed by how the series ended.

Out of Oz - A Simple Review for a Complicated Book. Thinking about reading another book of the Wicked Series was very exciting to me, the one who has already read Wicked four times. And knowing all the characters like they were my own creation, I was eager to continue on with my fifth reading until I came across Out Of Oz. That said, I trust you get the idea of just how much passion I have for Dorothy and her story. But Out of Oz disappointed me with all the politics and details that thoroughly confused me. I kept waiting to read more of my favorite people, animals, Animals of the previous books, but there was entirely too much of the lands, too much of the governments. Now I feel a little empty, knowing there are no more books about my friends of Oz. That said,
