Mrs. Probably the best read. Someone wrote "better have your Kleenex close by". This is so true. Wonderful reminder of Gods faithfulness to those who desire to do His will!

Outstanding book on the impact of the Civil War. One of the best books I have read about the Civil War's impact on the lives of both slaves, planation owners and the conflict between the North and the South. I gained a real insight into the feelings each of the affected groups had for each other, and the passions and the hatred each of them felt. The story gave a vivid account of the conditions of the slaves and how they survived with faith and love for each other under horrific living conditions. I felt as though I was viewing this war and living through it while battles were fought and won with tremendous casualties. The book describes the internal struggle of one of the heroines who had conflicting loyalties, being Southern born and bred, while spying on the confederates for the yankees, and willing to lose everything, including the love of her fiancé for the purpose of freeing the slaves. This was a book that was hard to put down and a worthy read by anyone who wants an historical perspective of what it was like to live during the Civil War.

Candle in the Darkness. This is one of the best books I have ever read because it gave a historical account of what my people went through to gain their freedom with the help of The Lord and the compassion of my white brothers and sisters. I give this book 5 stars.

Candle in the Darkness. This was a wonderful historical heart-wrenching and heart-warming book. This was a wonderful way to have an insight from both sides on why the war was fought against the north and south. It was a real eye opening in facing a horrible time when men fought and killed each other and how they endured such suffering. In with all the sorrow there was also a wonderful love story. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys a wonderfully written novel.

Perfection in writing. I am deeply touched by this account of our history. The story of Caroline could be any of ours from that period of time til The Lord returns. I hope there is more to this story of Caroline but if not I will gladly read more of your books. Thank you for your words of truth through your special character, Eli

Amazing!!!!!!. Very good book! Made me so happy reading it. I love it how the author makes the story correspond with actual events of the civil war. Not to mention the power of love that is shown throughout the story. Definitely a good read!!!!:)

It’s really good!. It is a good read! I like seeing her point of view, even if I did not agree with everything. It’s terribly sad how Christians can hate people and call themselves followers of Christ. It did show how God will inspire that one person (in many different areas). Truly, we are all brothers and sisters, literally—through Adam and Eve, and through Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior. We have to live that way down here in order to live that way up there. God bless and may be continue to inspire you!

Draws you right into that time in history.. I was unable to put it down, reading and actually understanding the turmoil and trials of those who lived during this time period. Highly recommend. One of my top favorites!

Candle in the Darkness. This book, along with A Light To My Path, and Fire By Night are must reads if you are interested in the Civil War. These books are among Lynn's best and should be read one after the other. You won't be able to put them down!

Must read (Along with the other 2). What was it like to live through the Civil war? Read this book (and the others in this series) to gain compassion, understanding, and thankfulness for the freedoms we all have and for those that have fought for it. Freedom is never free and always comes at a high cost. If you allow it; no matter what your nationality/race/color it should make you question do you truly see color or truly see people?

Candle in The Darkness. Loved the history! Comparing the biblical story of Moses freeing the slaves, to the civil war was genius. Something I never thought of before, but so true. Very uplifting! I always feel good after reading Lynn Austin's books. The romance doesn't hurt much either(:

I Feel Like I LIVED thru the Civil War Now. I've never been one to become entrenched in the Civil War, but this book made it come alive for me (& my husband, who also read it). I've also never thought how so many scriptures pulled from the Bible were SO appropriate in this time of history. I loved how Lynn Austin brought my Christianity to a deeper level, through her characters' lives and thru their stories, and definitely liked the ending! It was hard to put this book down, once I got into the lives of the characters.

Amazing. I am a prolific reader but this book has become one of my favorites. Rarely can I find no fault in a book but this book is flawless. Spiritual without being annoying, funny at times, and deeply moving. Ms. Austin did a fabulous job. I am in love.

Candle in the Darkness. I love the mix of civil war history with living a godly life in this book. Caroline pulls out the humanness in all of us--agonizing over what is right, facing fear and heartache and physical deprivation. Through her, we learn what it means to be God's servant, to give our whole heart and will to Him in the midst of suffering. I finished this book with a greater desire to turn my life to Massa Jesus.
