Escape from Camp 14 by Blaine Harden Book Summary

With a New Foreword

The heartwrenching New York Times bestseller about the only known person born inside a North Korean prison camp to have escaped.

North Korea’s political prison camps have existed twice as long as Stalin’s Soviet gulags and twelve times as long as the Nazi concentration camps. No one born and raised in these camps is known to have escaped. No one, that is, except Shin Dong-hyuk.

In Escape From Camp 14, Blaine Harden unlocks the secrets of the world’s most repressive totalitarian state through the story of Shin’s shocking imprisonment and his astounding getaway. Shin knew nothing of civilized existence—he saw his mother as a competitor for food, guards raised him to be a snitch, and he witnessed the execution of his mother and brother.

The late “Dear Leader” Kim Jong Il was recognized throughout the world, but his country remains sealed as his third son and chosen heir, Kim Jong Eun, consolidates power. Few foreigners are allowed in, and few North Koreans are able to leave. North Korea is hungry, bankrupt, and armed with nuclear weapons. It is also a human rights catastrophe. Between 150,000 and 200,000 people work as slaves in its political prison camps. These camps are clearly visible in satellite photographs, yet North Korea’s government denies they exist.

Harden’s harrowing narrative exposes this hidden dystopia, focusing on an extraordinary young man who came of age inside the highest security prison in the highest security state. Escape from Camp 14 offers an unequalled inside account of one of the world’s darkest nations. It is a tale of endurance and courage, survival and hope.

Read it one day. Buy it. It's really that good

Amazing!. Shin's story it's amazing and I loved the way the author explains the political and social issues that North Koreans have gone through for many years. This book makes want to do something, help somehow!

Shin the survivor. This is a very disturbing book that defines the lives of thousands of North Korea. It demonstrates the brutality of the Kim family's regime and what the hierarchy will do to stay in power. The story of Shin portrays him as both a victim and a perpetrator who is without emotional feelings, morals; only a self serving animal. He clings to a life so horrific and cruel, one has to wonder why live? As you read on a you will be mesmerized by the story of betrayal,of condemnation and eventually redemption.

Heart breaking and inspiring. I can't recommend this book highly enough, it is a well told account of the awe inspiring story of one young man's survival and escape from one of the most brutal dictatorial regimes to exist in modern times. I literally finished the book in two days, and I could not out It down until I had read it all.

Mesmerizing. Escape From Camp 14 is an engrossing account of an extraordinary man who, despite being born in the hell-hole of a North Korean prison and having been raised in the most gut-wrenching and depraved conditions imaginable, achieved the unthinkable by escaping the prison that he was born into, escaping North Korea and making his way to a totally alien environment and culture where he seems to be coping rather well. Perhaps the saddest part of his very gruesome story is that he struggles to rise above the psychological damage inflicted by his nightmare childhood and considers himself "unworthy." Surviving what he survived, escaping and learning to make his way in foreign lands and cultures so wildly at odds with everything he ever knew or experienced in his first 23 years will prove to anyone that he is not "garbage." Super-human maybe, but most definitely not garbage. Larry Cantu Singapore

Everyone Should Read This. This book is more than heartbreaking, it's not just a sad story. It's a real story chronicling the painful life of Shin, a man born into a North Korean kwalliso, a prison camp. It goes into detail about the horrors he went through. For anybody who wants to know about what's going on in North Korea, this and the book Nothing To Envy. Don't even waste your time with that stupid movie The Interview.

An informative read. This book is interesting and heartbreaking. The things this young man endured are beyond belief. I have read many books and articles on North Korea and I thought I had an idea of the plight of its citizens. I was wrong.

Wow!. Great read. A tremendously insightful and well written account of an incomprehensibly terrible, yet inspiring story. Helped me realize that there are issues far more pressing regarding North Korea than just the nuclear issue. Glad that this information of prison camps is coming to light. I will do what I can to bring awareness to and further the cause of human rights in North Korea. Definitely a must read...highly recommend.

A fantastic read. This book was an utterly amazing read. Giving people a gruesome insight of the world that surrounds them.

Propaganda, too many lies.. Paid by imperialists.

Too Many Issues to Address in this Review. This book is receiving awesome reviews but I just can't agree. In fact, of all the reviews I have written I have never given a book one star...until now. The book has numerous inconsistencies; so many inconsistencies that I seriously begin to doubt the validity of some of its accounts. I honestly believe some of his stories are massively exaggerated or completely made up because it benefited his newfound gravy train. I say this because of the timing some of these stories came out....despite years of telling other accounts. A personal preference, but I didn't like the writing. Many parts are not in chronological order and the jumping around can confuse the reader who is putting in full effort to understand what Shin went through. It does get a bit better in this regard towards the end. The grammatical errors also left me feeling less than pleased. In several parts of the book the author takes time out to explain what is happening globally during the same time, which some reviewers have complained about citing filler. I found these parts necessary especially since North Korean life is so unknown to the world. However, the author fails to take the same time to explain more about camp life. Sure there are stories about camp life- but you never get the overview so the reader can fully grasp the situation. And while I certainly don't doubt that Shin was born/raised in a prisoner war camp, that he is a survivor in the truest since of the word, or that his life has been more horrific than I can even begin to imagine- in the end I find him unsympathetic. After all he has gone through, and after being out for a decade, he continues to fail to take responsibility for himself or his life. Because his story is so heart wrenching, he has been enabled by so many. The great kindness and sympathies of others has reduced him to the point that he still refuses to get a job, education beyond the rudimentary level, or to learn English. He truly feels that because of his "story" he should be taken care of or get rich to the point that he doesn't have to work like every other person in the world. In the end, purchasing this book further enables him because he gets half the profits. I would have no problem with this if he was half the fighter he once was but that fails to be the case.

Harrowing true account. A must-read true story about one man's escape from Camp 14 in North Korea. It provides a sobering look into one of the most in humane dictatorships of the century.

Read It. This was eye-opening to the craziness that people are forced endure. There was never a boring moment and it was quite an easy and fluid read.

Excellent read. A very interesting book about a country we know so little about. A person who has endured so much and is shown as a truly tortured soul still working towards a peaceful and happy life.

Escape from Camp 14. I was able to read this book in one sitting and I really enjoyed it. Its tough to completely understand what he went through and how terrible the north Koreans really are. Its a shame that the world allows a country to get away with the same crimes as the Nazi’s during WWII. Shin’s story is one of few who have escaped to talk about the crimes committed and the journey it takes to escape the hell hole of north Korea. It’s sad that only in north Korea could a prison camp (concentration camp) escapee blind into the local population so well. I would recommend this book to everyone.

Escape from Camp 14. Amazing story. Everyone should read it to understand how great it is to be free, living in the USA.

Eye opening. I read this book after I finished Nothing to Envy by Barbara Demrick. It is a tale of incredible survival against all odds. Shin is a heroic human and unbelievably lucky. The story is a glimpse into a COMPLETELY different world and mindset than the American way. I appreciate also how the author gave sufficient background and historical reference information to help the reader understand the context of the story. We should all be more aware of the longest standing, modern human rights tragedy of our planet. A fast read and highly recommended.

Camp 14. I found this book amazing from beginning to end. Thought provoking and extremely disturbing at the same time. I pray that shin can come to the point in his life that he can forgive himself and find love. And I also pray that he will someday be reunited with his father and he will see his mother and brother in heaven.

Must read. Shin's story is fascinating, frightening, and inspiring. No one should ever have to endure what he has. I have a much greater appreciation after hearing his story. I've really worked harder and complained less. Everyone should be required to read this book sometime in their life.

I could not imagine life in North Korea this horrific!. This is a must read.

An awesome story of survival. A must read!

Not for kids. This is not for kids...curses and talks about sex...plus just not something you need to read...watch some on 60 minutes and you'll get all the info you will need

Incredible. Heart breaking, life changing. Every complaint I've ever had was just a first world problem. Everyone should read this book.

Amazing. Highly recommend everyone read this book. Amazing how the world turns a blind eye to the conditions inside North Korea. Thank you Shin for sharing your story.

Escape from Camp 14. Profound. Shin speaks for everyone who has been ignorant, helpless, unknown and alone in terrible conditions. He lives For his brother, mother, father, and the countless abused victims of North Korea and anyone who has been helpless in the path of seeming overwhelming power. His survival, though he won't allow himself to admit it, shows all people that humanity survives and waits to grow against all opposition.

Moving. A moving story that leaves the reader haunted that blatant torture and brutality still continues everyday against innocent Koreans whose only crime is being born.

Eye Opening. A very detailed first hand account of what life is like for a North Korean citizen. A must read.

An eye opener!. An amazing account on an oppressive regimes inhumanity towards its own people and one persons struggle to survive.

Great and Fascinating Book!. This book makes me wonder if South Koreans were to walk through the camps of the North much like the Germans had to at the end of WWII, would they be moved to action.

Outstanding. Sadly, I don't read enough. But when I heard about this book on a local radio station I tried it and finished within two days. I cannot say enough about it to friends and family and encourage everyone to read about Shin's miraculous story and become aware of the atrocities still taking place in North Korea.

Couldn't Stop. I read this book in three days. What a riveting story and invaluable introspection into the human psyche - which we all share under the right circumstances. I count my blessings for my life fur but for the Grace of God go I.

Incredible.. This is just incredible and insane. Most informative $13 I've ever spent

Camp 14. This book is a riveting account of one young man's life, Shin, who was born and raised In a North Korean Prison Camp. I recommend this book, as it made me aware of an atrocity that is happening now. It is written well and kept me interested to continue reading.

Worth it. It's undoubtedly captivating to hear the story of Shin's journey to South Korea. But this books suffers from over narrating the entire political and economic history of the DPRK. A lot of the facts are great, but sometimes it seemed like an academic journal. Shin is an extraordinary person, and his story needed to be the focus. Still the book is worth the price of admission.

Haunting. Wow

Amazing. Truth is stranger than fiction. An amazing story, beautifully & simply told, & a tribute to all those heroes who have helped Shin.

Escape from Camp 14. This is a life changing book. The things that humans can do to human beings are unbelievable unless you live them as Shin did. We should be thankful everyday for our good fortune to be born into this country and life we lead!

Great book, Sad story. I loved this book. The author does a great job of telling the story. I'm amazed at the atrocities that occur in our world today and this is an eye opening glimpse into the world of an oppressed people. I must say that I was unaware and ignorant of the happenings in places like North Korea, I'm glad to have read this book and would suggest it to anyone who wants to have their eyes opened to a life that some people it this world must live in.

Great book!!. This book makes you understand life about North Korean prison camps for both guards and prisoners. The book paints a picture about life in North Korea that many don't know about

Must read!. I could not put it down. Shin's experiences will evoke extreme emotions in any reader. This should be a must read for all especially high school and college.

Incredible. I have never in my life read a book so fast and been so enthralled in a book. Shin's story was so moving and incredible I hope everyone will read it.

Exceptionally moving story. Escape from camp 14 is a story told by a young North Korean man born in a political prison camp who survived extreme unhumane cruelty and who successfully escaped from it to tell the world about his life in and out of the camp. It is exceptionally moving. The North Korean Regime must cease to exist. Its act is against humanity at the extreme.

Heartbreaking and Inspiring. I learned about this book after reading about it in the Wall Street Journal. Parts of it are hard to get through but I'm so glad I pushed myself to finish it. The human spirit and will to live is so powerful. We have much to learn from this amazing story of courage, perseverance, and will to live. Without question, this is a story that must to told.

Amazing resilience. This is an amazing story about the human condition. Can't wait to see the movie. Better to focus on the human rights issues in NK than on the crazy regime and nuclear weapons.

Amazing Story. Very moving !!!

A searing story of an escape, and a rare look into the gulags of North Korea. Much of what we know about the hermit kingdom that is North Korea comes from press reports. Many speculate because of the lack of insightful information about their dictatorship and closed society. Escape from Camp 14 breaks past the electrified barbed wire and offers a painful look into the horrifying world of the North Korean gulag told by one of two people ever to escape. Along with Man's Search for Meaning, Escape from Camp 14 offers an understanding of life (if you want to call it that) in a concentration camp. It does not make for pleasant reading. But this book offers an understand g of the darkest recesses of the world, and shows the cruelty that sadistic humans can inflict.

Pulls at your heart. After reading escape I wanted to fight for the Korean people trapped in the north! A story of survival and the human will!

In the details. Writing style is poor but the story is heart wrenching and shocking nonetheless. Recommended.

Good read. Beautifully narrated. Thanks for bringing the story in the limelight.

Escape from Camp 14. A shockingly revelation of how cruel humankind could treat their own race. Unimaginable! The book is well researched and written; totally absorbing.

Compelling. A horrific story of a young man who endured inhumane treatment in a North Korean prison camp. Shin's escape is a testament to base human spirit and his pure drive to survive. His escape has brought attention to the unimaginable human cruelty that transpires behind these prison camp walls.

Amazing story.. This story is simply amazing. I think the book would have benefited from maps and links to Goggle Earth locations.

Disturbing, liberating, thought provoking. It's hard to read this account and not be left with a feeling of I adequacy over how little thought we give in the west to the suffering of people like Shin. Thank you to Shin and the author for telling this story - may it awaken us to keep these poor souls in mind and do whatever we can to see an end to such misery and torture.

Incredible story. This story is unbelievably shocking. The thought that this occurs in modern times is terrifying.

Escape from camp14. This was a very educational, thought-provoking, and revealing look into a situation that I was basically unaware of. How these camps can even exist is maddening, to say the least, but the fact that somebody has escaped, and lived to tell about it, in such dramatic fashion, should help with their eventual abolition. I would recommend this book to anyone, and hopefully it will be a call to action for those that can enact positive change. Not only an end to the brutal camps throughout Korea but an end to the savage, in humane Kim dynasty.

Fascinating and horrifying. It's frightening that this could occur in these so called civilized times. It's time for the world to sit up and take notice of the crimes against humanity happening to north Koreans- and to finally help put a stop to it. Thank you to this young man for having the courage to share his story.

review. This book goes in depth to things almost unimaginable to a normal person. It triggers so many emotions.we need to put a stop to all the monstrosities happening inside this country. It is filled with anger, sadness, and total shock.

Astonishing. Makes me glad I was born in Canada. That this still goes on in the world is distressing.

Amazing. You just can't believe the kind of things described still go on in North Korea today and the stories are not coming out if a WW2 nazi prison camp book. More people need to read this story to understand the horrible terrible life that North Koreans have lived, and still live under the Kim dynasty. Must read.
