Heart of Darkness. Terribly sorry to be a pain but the description is rather misleading. Marlow is not a riverboat captain and Kurtz is not an ivory trader. Marlow's 'soul' is never in any danger - quite the contrary. Marlow is in fact a narrator of the tale -'seen darkly through glances and shadows.' And in fact there is also an unnamed master narrator who sits even further apart from the tale which is being told. Nothing is ever, ever, ever that simple with Conrad but there can be little doubt that this is the most important piece of writing from the 20th century. Short and ends with a scream...(think of that painting) And accept that you may never 'see' what has happened let alone explain...as Conrad/Marlow would say What do facts explain anyway? Think of the 'facts' of your life - do they explain anything?

Enjoyed it. I found the language quite hard at first because it is such archaic language but i got used to it
