The Expats by Chris Pavone Book Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • EDGAR AWARD WINNER • ANTHONY AWARD WINNER

“Expertly and intricately plotted, with a story spiraling into disaster and a satisfyingly huge amount of double-crossing, The Expats certainly doesn’t feel like a first novel.  This is an impressively assured entry to the thriller scene.”—The Guardian (UK)

Can we ever escape our secrets?

In the cobblestoned streets of Luxembourg, Kate Moore's days are filled with playdates and coffee mornings, her weekends spent in Paris and skiing in the Alps. But Kate is also guarding a tremendous, life-defining secret—one that's become so unbearable that it begins to unravel her newly established expat life. She suspects that another American couple are not who they claim to be; her husband is acting suspiciously; and as she travels around Europe, she finds herself looking over her shoulder, increasingly terrified that her own past is catching up with her. As Kate begins to dig, to uncover the secrets of the people around her, she finds herself buried in layers of deceit so thick they threaten her family, her marriage, and her life.

Stylish and sophisticated, fiercely intelligent, and expertly crafted, The Expats proves Chris Pavone to be a writer of tremendous talent.

The worst. I was compelled to write a review to warn anyone who might purchase this book. If you are expecting a fast paced, spy thriller, that keeps you turning the pages, this is not the book for you!

Chronology Issues. I enjoyed the read, but it was very hard for me to keep track of the chronology of the story. I had to go back many times and re-read chapters. I believe that the time line could have been better organized.

Why does this guy have a career?. One of the worst screenplays/books I think I've ever tried to read. The writing is so middle-grade dull and bad, the story so utterly stupid it just boggles the mind that this pos ever got published. If this is what readers find entertaining, then the rest of us who write good books should just give up because there’s no competing with peurile writing and storylines like this. It doesn’t even count as pure entertainment because of the preponderance of one-dimensional characters and the overabundance of cliches. Just…ugh. Long on bad sentences and just plain long.

Obsessed. I simply could not put my iPad down when reading this book. Instead of sleeping on a red-eye to Europe I was caught up in Kate and Dexter's adventures abroad. I hope Mr. Pavone has a new adventure for Kate in the works.

Expats was ok but confusing. Expats was a great story, but I was distracted by the way the author jumped around to different times in the story. The writing style was at times awkward and it is surprising that the editor let the many run-on sentences stay in the final manuscript. One sentence an entire page!

Hard to put down. Intricate plot that is almost believable. Most interesting is the writing style of the author. I'm talking about his unique way of describing the thoughts of his main character.

Could not put this book down. Fascinating and intriguing. I was addicted from the first page to the last. I wish he had other books out there to read.

The expats from life. I was hoping for a page turner but found myself putting it down often. The author's lack of relationship with the characters made it really hard to get into them and form that bond you hope to with a good read. It definitely felt like the main character, Kate, was written from a man's perspective - even if she was supposed to be a rough and tumble CIA operative. The twists didn't have me yearning for more. But i will say the plot was clever and inventive. Too bad it was shroud in confusing, plotless detail and weird time jumps whenever the suspense would build enough for you to care.

Needlessly complicated. It started out an interesting read, but a complicated plot got more complicated as it dragged on. I read to the end, but was confused throughout the last chapters.

Grabber!. More twists and turns that can be counted. What a wonderful story, terrifically written, with great character development. The jaunts throughout Europe were a bonus. Read this book. It is a grabber. Hard to put down.

Expats. Very intriguing. You had to follow carefully so as not to miss clues. It moved very carefully but I thought it was worth it. I'd give it 4 stars.

Love the twists. Great plot and multiple story lines. I couldn't put the book down!

The Expats. Too slow and too much repetative thinking. Readers are not dumb.

Expats. You read and read expecting something exciting to happen and nothing ever does!

Great read. Thoroughly enjoyed the twists and turns of the book!

The Expats. I really wanted to like this book. It provides an interesting glimpse into what life would be like as an expat in Europe. The subject matter and characters were interesting. But the non-linear storytelling was at times confusing and often frustrating. Why for example, must Kate's exit interview be broken up over several chapters, other than as an obvious (and inneffective) attempt to try to create the sensation of a thriller that can't be put down? The prose was rather awkward at times, as well.

The expats. Brilliantly paced, funny and moving. Wish I could have saved it for a great beach read.

Rubbish. Having visited, worked or lived in Luxembourg, Brussels, and Paris, I thought this would be a fun, quick read. Wrong! It was confusing, badly plotted, and poorly written. Wish I could get a refund!

The Expats. Very intriguing , with many twists and turns to keep you interested To the end.

The Expats. Most fun story I have read in years!

Clumsy schlock. Ugh. Simply dreadful gibberish. Awkward and expository. How was his published and what sort of hype machine possibly propelled it to best sellerdom? The American book factory racket at work, eh? I'd like my iTunes credits back, please.

The Expats. Having lived in The Netherlands and Ireland, and working in the financial services business (at a fairly senior level), I have to admit that this was a fairly enjoyable read. Locales and descriptions are accurate. The emotions are VERY close to reality. Trailing expat spouses are in a really tough situation. However, Dexter would have hooked up the camera. He would never have been so sloppy (I'm not half as bright as he is, and I would never make the neophyte errors he did) and covered his tracks better ... I know that I did. The Luxembourg descriptions are close to accurate ... The Grand Hotel and Restaurant Speltz would be better described. On a scale of 100, I would give this an 85.

Vastly Overrated. The attempt to create tension and/or suspense by telling the story in a non-linear fashion fell utterly flat. The main character was so inconsistently written, it was impossible to feel any connection to her. The secondary characters were completely two-dimensional- especially the husband, who never felt like part of the story at all. The plot, once it was no longer obscured by the convoluted set-up, is so laughably flimsy that I finally understood why the author was so reluctant to reveal it. Boring, lazy, very self-satisfied writing with an ending that was actually offensive.

Explain it to me once again. Four liars tell each other lies over and over again. Then in the last 25% of the book is spent explaining first one version of the truth ... No there's yet another explanation, then another. By the end who cares who is scamming whom?

Until the Last Paragraph. Until the Last Paragraph I did not know the outcome. An excellent read.

Expats. This book is so slow to develop I am sorry I paid for this pile of verbosity that drags out a plot that is not compelling. I'm wondering how it got published, I'm halfway through and there's been no significant plot or character development, just repeated themes. Don't waste your time or money.

The Expats. Easy, fun light reading, but basically stupid. Timelines confusing and ending far fetched. Must have been marketed extensively to get to the best seller list.

Boring...... Poorly crafted... Jumps around... Lacks cohesiveness... Uninteresting... Page after page of descriptions of housework... Finally gave up 3/4ths through it, and I rarely put a book down.

Pointless, boring and poorly structured. Could have used an editor. I finished it just because I am compulsive but if you are really expecting something on lines of Le Carre you will be disappointed. The closest thing to spy raft here is the protagonist walking on a window ledge. The remaining 9/10th of the book is comprised of an extremely 1 dimensional character struggling to cope with being a housewife.

A truly delicious meal for the mind!. Superb. This book is truly a delicious meal for the mind. The writer was able to jump between past & present in a smooth way without disturbing the flow of events. The set up is in Europe, about an American couple venturing into a new life & a new start. One of them is ex-CIA with dark hidden secrets. Add to that the small little detail of Cyber-theft and you have a winner! Every page you read will leave you hungry for more!

Excellent Read!. Fasten your seat belts ... it's a page turner with suspense at every corner ... and an outcome that can't be suspected. Enjoy!

The Expats. I devoured this book in two days. So many clever twists and turns, and so delicately revealed. The best novel of its genre I've read, perhaps ever!

Vacation reading. This was quick, fun vacation reading with enough twists to keep me guessing.

Expats. Possibly an author with "ADD". I like novels with twists and turns, but this was a confusing read. Would be considered over priced as a hardback, definitely so as an e-book.

The Expats. Pros: Interesting plot with some good twists. Cons: The time lines got confusing and some of the relationship exposition seemed shallow. Just about every character has a secret past or second life which, while interesting, seems unrealistic. Almost put it down halfway through which is not a good recommendation for a thriller.
