Exceptional!!. Didn’t want this to end!!

Incredible. Finished this a couple weeks ago and I loved it a lot. Easily one of my favorite books. Beautiful imagery and haunting story. The use of a biased/unreliable narrator makes it that much better to break down.

My very favorite book of all times. I have read and reread this classic The characters are like family to me so much hidden wisdom in this tale a Greek Tragedy unfolds on the first few paragraphs and you are taken on a beautiful well written ride that you never quite leave Recommend beyond recommend this book and look forward to all writings by Ms Tartt

ccaero75. This was a good read, not as good as The Goldfinch. I felt the end was rushed and wrapped up quickly.

Ugh.. Really not sure what the story was or the point of any of it. I only finished it because I had nothing else to read.

“Beauty is often alarming.”. I’ll blame it on the dreamlike, tender enough way this story unwinds (though, I’m not entirely convinced), but I felt a rush of anxiety at the end. Sure, that could have been mitigated through some sort of pity of these flawed characters, but that’s probably missing the whole point. Instead, I think that unease more extends from the strong personal connections I feel with this novel, most being difficult to explain. And I think experience might be the only way one can know that... Excellent, even through its shortcomings.

Exquisite!. What a writer!

A Rare Good Read. Mesmerized me for an entire weekend...a shadowy mystery that reminds me of The Magus, My Cousin Rachael..the characters, the story...one of those books to read over and over.

BEST BOOK EVER. This was flawlessly written and a wonderful read.

The Secret History. Donna Tart's characters are always interesting but dark. She has an exceptional descriptive style, making you feel like you've been to her locations. The protagonists seem very real in a depressing way. Her books can be hard to put down; you want some slices of light to filter in but it doesn't happen and since she makes you root for a good ending, it is disappointing.

Love. Any Henry enjoyers??

Was this 3 book?. The first 4 hours of pages don’t matter, relationships are so poorly done you feel nothing about your actors

Incredible. This book may not be for everyone as the story takes awhile to manifest. However, it is masterfully crafted to where the reader is sucked right into the story, feeling the anxiety, depression, discomfort, and absolute horror each character felt. It feels as though you actually lived the life of the main character. The writing style of this book is unique and makes disgusting seem beautiful.

The Secret History. In addition to being a bizarre mystery novel — the victim and his murderers are announced on the first page, this book is an elegant meditation on life, death, fate and god (or rather the gods). It is also a hilarious black comedy. altogether a thoroughly entertaining read.

Interminable. Ponderous does not even begin to describe this book. Thought I’d never finish, even though I usually fly through books. Pretentious characters, none of whom I could find a reason to care about.

pales in comparison to the goldfinch. read after the goldfinch. lacks the depth of character development and emotional force. found myself coming back to the story just tofinish it, not because it had its hooks in me. clearly donna tartt had not hit her stride yet.

Fantastic; one of the best books I’ve read. *spoilers* I thought it was masterfully done and I loved the unpredictable ending. Many books that I read seem to follow a formula and this one was completely unique and very well done. I thought that the investigation after Bunny’s death and watching the group fall apart was part of its genius. It was a book from a different point of view; the perspective of one of the murderers. The characters were phenomenal-realistic and believably flawed. It held me in rapt attention and I would 100% recommend for anyone to read.

loved it!. I got so stuck in this book it’s about all i could bring myself to think about for the whole week I was reading it. While i’ve seen some mixed reviews on here I didn’t have such a difficult time developing emotions and attachments toward the characters. I really enjoyed Henry and Richard’s relationship. This book is definitely one of my favorites so far.

Terrible book!. Just say NO to this book.

Elegant. Heartbreaking. Twisted.. Beauty is in fact terrifying.

breathtaking. this book is simply astonishing. amazing writing, amazing story, i will not stop thinking about it for a long, long time...

Bland Main Character but OUTSTANDING PLOT. I loved this book, I loved hating the characters but in an oddly good way. The Plot makes you keep reading. I also Felt like the Main Character was bland but the things happening around him was like watching a movie from his point of view. Overall I seriously enjoyed it, I loved how it was written but, I had to use a Translater for some parts. Which is fine. If you love a good Psychological Thriller and a murder in a dark academic setting in the 80s. You will enjoy this book <333

Amazing. I’m not usually a fan of fiction but this is some of the best writing I’ve ever read. Incredibly engaging and a wonderful read

AMAZING. I found this book through a recommendation from a blog, it took a while for me to purchase the book, but boy, it was definitely worth it. The author put their heart into this book, making you feel as if the narrator, Richard, was literally talking to you and making you feel as if you're living every detail. It's such an amazing book, with rich words, and every sentence you read makes you want to read more and more. I couldn't take my eyes of my phone while reading this. This is a MUST GET! I loved it, and I know that you will too.

Great Read. Thoroughly enjoyed reading the book and couldn’t muster the ability to put it down at times, wanting to read on and find out more. Highly recommend to those that are curious about a good read.

Beautiful. Such a wonderful journey of the English language.

One of my all time favorites now. Is it a crazy read and can be hard to get into for a bit? Yes. But it’s so beyond worth it.

The best book ever.. I live this book and recommend it to all. The writing is a little hard to read. It used older words, but I think most people can get past that. I believe I’m a quick reader, this book took me a little longer than a week to read. I gave this book to my friend and she is enjoying to so far. The book can be kind of depressing. I thought it was amazingly writing, and the plot is wonderful!! This is a must read!

My favorite modern author. Life is beautiful, infinitely flawed, and Donna Tartt knows how to take a sliver of the world and magnify it for us to feel with all of our senses and emotions. Her writing voice is so enchanting, how she uses foreshadowing to keep the pages turning, she could make a recipe book into a cliff hanger. Read her books when you won’t be interrupted too often or you will get crabby.😉

Can’t stop thinking about it. Even though this was released in the 90s, I didn’t read it until 6 months ago. I DEVOURED it and I’m still thinking about it. Donna Tartt is THE MASTERRRRRRR!!!

100 Words or Less. Such a strange novel. It’s not bad. Well written and good characters. Oh sure, in the middle, it seems interesting enough and there are a few surprises. Yet … in the end, there’s no real impact. After a couple of weeks, it was hard for me to even remember some of the details. After a month, most of the novel draws a complete blank. That only shows me how lacking in depth the whole story is. The characters are so esoteric and fringe, that their fate carries no meaning. I didn’t really care that much.

Easily Readable, Slightly Rushed. This book for its 550+ pages was engaging from its first paragraph. The characters were so peculiar and mysterious, I had to know more. It is beautifully written and tells a refreshing original story. The end did feel a bit rushed, after everything I experienced with the characters, I wanted more. Also, Tartt wrote the book in ‘92 and it takes place in ‘08 giving it an unrealistically “old timey” feel.

Wanted to love but the characters are truly unlikeable. Loved The Goldfinch and wanted to read her first book but unfortunately I found the characters extremely unlikeable and a lot happened throughout the book only to have a very unsatisfying ending. It starts out slow and some parts involving the Greek literature can be dense and disengaging. Overall found that the characters had very little arcs and only got worse throughout the story. Our one chance for anything redeemable,to happen fell short and we were left with the only good character abruptly exiting. 3/5 stars for me.

The Secret History. Intelligent. Dark.

Awful Don’t waste your time. I wish I would have never read this book.

Ehh. I had this book recommended to me several times, and I saw so many amazing reviews. It’s likely I just “didn’t get it,” but I did not like this book. At all. If it didn’t have such impressive reviews I wouldn’t have finished it. I felt no attachment to the characters or the storylines. I would really love someone who enjoyed this book to tell me what they got out of it because I’m not understanding!!!!

Buy this book now. Magnificent. I’ve read it several times and it ranks with the best I’ve read in the last 20 years. A brilliant writer. If you haven’t discovered it, I feel sorry for you. Intelligent and chilling. I’ll never forget it.

Translucent in Human Nature. The Characters for one are beautifully crafted, each having their own slots to fill. I think the fact even at the end there r some mysteries we as the reader don’t know but, at the same time I think that’s the beauty of it.

Snooze fest. So boring
