The Darkest Child by Delores Phillips & Tayari Jones Book Summary

A new edition of this award-winning modern classic, with an introduction by Tayari Jones (An American Marriage), an excerpt from the never before seen follow-up, and discussion guide.

Pakersfield, Georgia, 1958: Thirteen-year-old Tangy Mae Quinn is the sixth of ten fatherless siblings. She is the darkest-skinned among them and therefore the ugliest in her mother, Rozelle’s, estimation, but she’s also the brightest. Rozelle—beautiful, charismatic, and light-skinned—exercises a violent hold over her children. Fearing abandonment, she pulls them from school at the age of twelve and sends them to earn their keep for the household, whether in domestic service, in the fields, or at “the farmhouse” on the edge of town, where Rozelle beds local men for money.

But Tangy Mae has been selected to be part of the first integrated class at a nearby white high school. She has a chance to change her life, but can she break from Rozelle’s grasp without ruinous—even fatal—consequences?

Anonymous. This book was so sad. My heart simply broke for the main character. But it also showed that one should strength in adversity, and to love others but never forget to also love yourself. Long read but good read....

Amazing. One of the best books I’ve ever read ! What an amazing well written masterpiece ...

Amazing. A wonderfully written story. Hope. Life. It all springs eternal and is profoundly expressed in 691 pages. My first ebook, not my last!

Excellent writing!. This was wonderfully written, and with such intensity, unable to put it down. AMAZING!

Amazing. This book was one of the best books I’ve ever read.

Great book. What a great book! We need a part two!

The Darkest Child. One of the best books I’ve ever read! I️ hope to see a sequel soon. We have to know what happens with Tangy Mae and the rest of the Quinns’

A-mazinggg. Loved every moment of this book! Must read

Darkest child. One of the saddest books I ever read. Insanity, disfunction, miss guided beliefs and morals ran rampant through this world. Sometimes I didn’t believe it could happen or I refused to believe. The writing was moving and painted the characters in colors of hope when ever there was a chance in this very sad story.

First time's the charm!. For her first book, she did an excellent job! As twisted as it is, I love the storyline.

Grammar 101. The grammar and punctuation in this book was terrible. The editor should be ashamed. The suffering the children experienced at the hands of their mother was too much for me. I could not finish the book and would not recommend it.

Engrossing...A Real Page Turner. I enjoyed this read thoroughly. It provided an insight to post plantation life and had all the scandalized elements of a juicy family saga. The main character's ability to forgive seemed to be over the top and a tad unrealistic when it came to her sadistic mother, but that didn't stop me from enjoying the story.

The Darkest Child. This book ripped my heart out by the way Rosie treated her daughters and sons . I want to claw her face out for her daughters sake. Tangy Mae is a strong woman if ever I saw one. I wanted to keep reading to see if she made it out town and if she got that scholarship. Harrowing and unthinkable to think that situations like this go on every day.

Loved it!. This is a great read! A page turner for sure!

Could not stop reading. This book is soooooooo good. It’ll have you entrapped and so involved with the story that you just want to keep reading.

🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽. Greatest book ever

Great Book. One of the best books I've read in years! Told all my reading friends.

Great Book. Starts off slow but very entertaining will keep you interested.

Read this book!!!. One of the best books I've read in a long time! I'm searching for other books by this author now

Wonderful. Great read

The Darkest Child. I just finished reading this book. I loved it, it really resonated with me! All the characters in this book were in search of some type of love that just seemed to elude them. The only thing that remained was pain, hurt and miscommunication! You would assume that Rosie was the antagonist, but you would be wrong, just like her kids, she learned her behavior somewhere!

Shawn McDonough. An amazing book! I couldn't put it down! Tangy Mae was so brave to finally break the curse of her mother!

The Darkest Child. Don’t read this book if your looking for a happy outcome. This book is not for the light hearted. It was hard to read but hard to put down. It’s set at the beginning of the civil rights movement so reading how black people were treated is disheartening and unbelievably sad but very truthful. You have that whole dimension then the main characters treatment of her children and the outcomes of their lives is just dark. Like I said don’t read if your looking for a happy outcome but this book definitely draws you in and you have to get to the end to see if something changes.

Must read!. This story is so encapsulating, it sticks with you for years. Tho it’s fiction it feels truthful bc you know these types of things happen.

Betrayal. This book is a gripping tale of a troubled family, of loss, betrayal and endurance.

The Darkest Child. Riveting. Soul murking.

Amazing. Though incredibly difficult to read at times, because I kept wanting something better for the protagonist, this was a fantastic book. I wish some of characters were a little better developed, but overall, one of the best books I've read in awhile-and I read A LOT.

Darkest Child. One Of the best books I read in a while!!!!

A ten star book!. This was a really great book. Bahni Turpin did a good job narrating this story.

Great Book. Too many times my heart broke for Tangy Mae and her sisters but this is the kind of pain some people live in everyday.
