Beautiful Ruins Book Reviews
Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter Book Summary
“Why mince words? Beautiful Ruins is an absolute masterpiece.” — Richard Russo
The acclaimed, award-winning author of the national bestseller The Financial Lives of the Poets returns with his funniest, most romantic, and most purely enjoyable novel yet: the story of an almost-love affair that begins on the Italian coast in 1962 . . . and is rekindled in Hollywood fifty years later.
The story begins in 1962. On a rocky patch of the sun-drenched Italian coastline, a young innkeeper, deep in daydreams, looks out over the waters of the Ligurian Sea and spies an apparition: a tall, thin woman, a vision in white, approaching him on a boat. She is an American starlet, he soon learns, and she is dying.
And the story begins again today, half a world away, when an elderly Italian man shows up on a movie studio's back lot—searching for the mysterious woman he last saw at his hotel decades earlier.
What unfolds is a dazzling roller coaster of a novel, spanning fifty years and nearly as many lives. From the lavish set of Cleopatra to the shabby revelry of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Walter introduces us to the tangled lives of a dozen unforgettable characters: the starstruck Italian innkeeper and his long-lost love; the heroically preserved producer who once brought them together and his idealistic young assistant; the army veteran turned fledgling novelist and the rakish Richard Burton himself, whose appetites set the whole story in motion—along with the husbands and wives, lovers and dreamers, superstars and losers, who populate their world in the decades that follow. Gloriously inventive, constantly surprising, Beautiful Ruins is a story of flawed yet fascinating people, navigating the rocky shores of their lives while clinging to their improbable dreams.

Didn’t like the Writing. Based on the book synopsis this should have been a book I'd love. Unfortunately, I didn't like the writing style and so the book failed to lure me in and I couldn't wait to finish it. The writing style is a bit cheesy for me with all the predictable Hollywood mumbo jumbo and stereotypes. I did like the character Pasquale, and if this had been a story through his eyes, it might have been a worthwhile story.
A Great Book. Beautiful Ruins is a great book, believable and touching characters, fiction that takes liberty with fact and makes a thoroughly fun read that I didn’t put down. One of those books you recommend to a friend then feel envious that they get to read it for the first time. Walter uses language so well, as he has in other novels of his I’ve recently read, The Cold Millions and The Financial Lives of the Poets, both romps of pure linguistic pleasure and so diverse in theme and voice, part of the enjoyment in reading Walter is the sheer marvel that I have that someone can write so well and tell such a compelling, believable, humane story, which seems to edify your whole life.
Beautiful ruins. Can someone please edit this book The author rambles on and on when developing his characters Good plot nice story but tedious to get through.
Lighthearted Fun. An enjoyable read from Walter with interesting characters and comical situations throughout. I am looking forward to reading more of his books...EAF
Ms. Excellent. Want to read it again. Superior.
The Book for this Summer. You just have to admire this, and please don't read it in one sitting.
Beautiful Ruins. Love it! My first book from Jess Walker...but I'm so impressed. Amazing Talent! Fantastic ability to develop characters...and at the perfect pace ( not rushed). The story obviously builds wonderfully with every turn of page , but the real beauty is how we keep learning so much more about the characters, even very late in the story (their unique personals sues, and regrets...derived from the decisions they've made, and lived with for decades). And the fast paced rumblings of Richard Burton are nothing short of brilliant.
Beautiful Ruins. This book was terrible!!!
Beautiful. You will fall in love with this novel! The words, the characters, the scenes, imagined like motion picture sets, are captured brilliantly. I was absolutely enthralled with this book!
Enjoy!. Lots of interesting characters and chapters like short stories make this book easy and fun reading.
One word: Beautiful. Beautiful, poignant and relevant, I found myself lost in the stories of these familiar, broken characters as I followed their twisted life paths over decades. Not high brow literary fiction per se, but smart in such a respectful way that my appreciation for the story grew as I read through the pages of the stories. Profound enough in its conclusions about life and death that I cried throughout the last twenty pages. Well worth your time.
Positively brilliant. I loved every twist and turn of this delicious book, and may reread it immediately to make sure I've captured every morsel!
Beautiful Ruins. Loved it.......current position on my 2012 BOOK list.....HIGH Sorry to see it end.
Beautiful Ruins. This is an absolutely outstanding book. It is one of those rare ones that you literally can't put down and don't want to end. It is beautifully written and very entertaining. You will love the characters. BUY this book!
Beautiful Ruins. I first heard of this book when The Miami Herald named it one of the top books of 2012. I bought the book when I saw the cover and was instantly reminded of the Ligurean coast. I recommend this book because it is delightful, thoughtful and fascinating. I hope one day to return to Italy and though I know Porto Vergogna does not exist, I may still look for it.. Thank you Jess Walter.
Engrossing. Great character development and descriptions of Italian life.
Interesting story. The story started off a little slow & confusing, so I put the book down for awhile. But when I re-started it, it really picked up. Turned out to be a very moving, sad, touching story of lost love, mixed lives and missed chances. I very much enjoyed the ending & am glad I didn't give up on it! Enjoy!
Beautiful Beautiful Ruins. This is a book that flows, a book that's about water and time and love and ruins. It's about shifting time and the timelessness of relationships and love. Jess Walter gently carries you across boundaries both geographical and metaphorical. His characters are all beautiful, true, honest, and flawed. Yes, the makings for a great foundation for a wonderful novel. Oh, it's good.
Skip pages. I found myself scrolling past pages. I became bored and thought characters like Shane was thrown in to make more story.
Let down. This book pushed me in many different directions. Too many side-stories and characters that pulled from the focus of the main subject matter.
Best I've read in years. Simply a great story. If you grew up in the 60's, you should love it.
Wonderful characters and a rich story. I could hardly put this book down! I loved the inter-woven story lines of fictional characters and actual celebrities. Just beautifully written. A great summer read. And now I want to go to Italy to inhale these amazing sights as described by Jess Walters. Ciao!
Wow!. Could not put this one down- it was fluid and thought provoking in its lovely eloquence
Beautiful story. An amazing story and beautifully written. A must read for anyone who has ever found a lost love.
One reading might not be enough.... This is a beautiful story that I can't help feeling I will read again in the not too distant future. It evolves in a slightly disjointed fashion but somehow manages to come together when it needs to. I would highly recommend that it be read slowly...and savored since when it's over you wish it wasn't..
Just flat out brilliant. The book writers wish they wrote.
Beautiful ruins. The most boring book I have ever read in my life. How could this be on so many 2012 book reviews. Too much jumping around, was I in Italy where I wanted to be? Or Oregon, or California,or Idaho. So confusing! Absolute nonsense to write a book this way.
Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walters. Jess Walters has sculpted, releasing from the stone - so to speak - this story of stories - of lives touching at crucial points igniting sparks that propel the narrative(s) forward unexpectedly, yet eventually coming to a richly satisfying end. What a story, and Jess Walter - what a masterful storyteller. And now, I am going to read it again! Laurie Lyon

My New Favourite Book (of all time).. Too effusive? I love female authors. I love historical fiction. I love Italy. And I love Italy. When I started reading I thought, “This chick has got such a unique voice. Interesting. Almost dude-like.” Surprise! And well done Mister Walter! I lived inside this book with such joy, such anticipation, such longing, I never wanted it to end. And yet I simply could not stick to my self-imposed rationing. I was always gluttonous for more. God, I wish there could be a sequel. I’ll probably just read the whole damn thing again. Beautiful.
Fantastic. Fantastic summer read! Great story, beautifully told.
Anything that reminds me of cinque Terre makes me smile. Such a pleasant unobtrusive read, very nicely written, and takes you away and back to gentle reality very subtly and nicely
