De Athener Simon, zoon van Panaitios, had het bijster druk op den voorlaatsten dag der Panathenaien van het jaar 491 v. C. Hij had, in zijne hoedanigheid van commissaris voor den optocht, die den volgenden dag gehouden zou worden, allerlei teleurstellingen gehad en van den een naar den ander moeten draven. Een der meisjes, die in den stoet als korfdraagster zouden optreden, had zich plotseling ongesteld gevoeld en was door een ander vervangen moeten worden. Onder de runderen, voor het offer bestemd en die mede in de processie eene plaats bekleedden, waren er eenige ontdekt, die bepaald onvoldoende moesten geacht worden. Een tweetal der paradewagens, sedert het vorige jaar niet gebruikt, hadden bij de beproeving hun dienst geweigerd en behoorden nog eens flink nagezien te worden. Geen wonder dan ook, dat het hem aan tijd had ontbroken, de hippische en gymnische spelen, die heden plaats hadden, in hun vollen omvang te genieten. .
