Robert B. Parker's Lullaby by Ace Atkins Book Summary

“Handpicked by the Parker estate to be the keeper of the flame for the Spenser franchise, award-winning author Ace Atkins…rises flawlessly to the occasion.”—Kirkus Reviews

When fourteen-year-old Mattie Sullivan asks Spenser to look into her mother’s murder, he’s not convinced by her claim that the wrong man was convicted. Mattie is street-smart, wise beyond her years, and now left to care for her younger siblings and an alcoholic grandmother in a dilapidated apartment in South Boston. But her need for closure and her determination to make things right hits Spenser where he lives.

As Spenser becomes more involved, he thinks that Mattie may be onto something after all. And he’s going to need the help of his friend Hawk to find peace for Mattie—a job that’s more dangerous than he ever thought.

Lullaby. This b Guy must have studied, enjoyed, read every Spenser book and does a great job of making me forget it's not Robert Parker writing it. All the Spenser and Hawk interplay is there. I will read all these books and congrats on keeping the legend alive.

Better than ever. I loved Parker's writing. I may just love Ace's a tad more!

Spenser is back. It is good to see the Spenser franchise is alive and well. If you were to have been transported from the last page of the last book to the first page of this one without knowing of Parker's passing or that a man named Ace is now doing the writing, you would know that something is...off. The dialog is a bit more...scatological...than in the past, but the reintroduction of many of the old characters (halfway expected a Chollo or Lee Farrell sighting) we have come to know makes this trip back to Boston a welcome one.

Lullaby. Mr. Atkins has very closely captured the most important aspect of the Spenser character, the banter and witty repartee that drew me to this series 15 years ago. Bravo!

Storyline is good. Overall it is a good detective/crime story; drama was a bit repetitive, but it engaging. The downfall (for me), the ending was like driving in lane, not finished w/a sign directing the reader needs to buy the book in the series and most likely, the next after just to find out the of the road!

Awesome!!!. I started reading the book and was completely wrapped up in reading Spencer AGAIN!!! Not once did I think or was reminded that it was by someone other than Parker. The story is smooth and flows as it should. You did a wonderful job Ace Atkins and I Thank You for being able to have Spencer and the crew again.

Lullaby. Ace Atkins jumped right into the pace, the language, the characters Did a marvelous job. I'll be waiting for his next Spenser novel. Good for him.

Almost Parker. I thought I would not see another Spenser book. It's great to experience him again. Ace is close. He captures the essence of Spenser with his wit, manliness and creativity. He does give Spenser a little more of a drinker than Parker's Spenser and a little more touch of humanity. By that I mean Spenser is softer. However, I read the book without stopping. I'm ready for another.

Lullaby. Honestly, it was NOT Robert B. Parker. It was an imitation. The characters had no depth. I know it really wasn't him but why try to recreate something that wasn't yours in the first place. Better to let Spenser, Susan, and Hawk be remembered well written than to read them as incomplete characters. I miss his writing, but I would rather reread a book than have his name and characters misrepresented. I'm not saying the author is a bad writer, he's just not Robert B. Parker. No one is.

GREAT. that’s it. that’s the review.

Robert B. Parkers lullaby. Great read

Spenser lives on!. Ace Atkins retains the Spenser mode with appearing to clean up a few annoying habits, like Spenser and Susan's glib navel-gazing conversations about themselves. How I suffered through those conversations to enjoy the rest of the book. Of course, Susan barely features in this book, so I could be in for an ugly surprise in the future. However, any Spenser book (as well written as this one) is better than no Spenser book!

Lullaby. It's good to have Spenser back. Ace did a great job bringing him back. Can't wait for the next book.

Good fun read. Excellent for all Spenser fans

Spenser Is In Good Hands. There are many things that Spenser fans have come to expect... Snappy dialog, easy and natural narration, action, cooking, drinking, etc. Ace hits the high notes with a natural ease that makes it easy to understand why the Parker estate chose him. He gets what Spenser is, and what he isn't. There were times, when reading this book, that I forgot that I wasn't reading Parker. There were also times when I thought Ace might have been going too far out of his way to emulate Parker. But I think that's to be expected, and I think that as Ace gets more comfortable writing Spenser, the more "Ace" we will be reading. All in all, I am really happy with Ace Atkins' Spenser. I think most Spenser fans will be pleased. Thank you, Mr. Atkins! Now get started writing the next one!

Lullaby. Great book and story. Very Parkeresque. Five stars all the way.

Parker will be missed.. Hawk spoke more in this book than all 30 that Parker wrote. The dialogue was a bit weak and the ending was not exactly Parkeresque, but all in all it wasn't bed. It's a tough act to follow and Atkins did an OK job. Parker will definitely be missed.

Old Days. I am going to miss Robert Parker; his snappy repartee between characters and his descriptions of his meals are without equal. This book was the same easy, enjoyable read as his others with just enough suspense to qualify it for the thriller category. I am looking forward to seeing if Ace Atkins can carry his style into the future. By the way, my best suggestions for new work are "Robert Parkers Guide to Boston" or "Robert Parkers Guide to Great Cooking". Anybody want to partner on the latter?

:). Easy, fun read!
