A model for motivating struggling readers and writers. I had a chance to read this book and ultimately chose it as an example for "Copy / Paste" my educational blog. I was writing about the merits of student publication, and this project was a perfect example - I urge teachers (and parents) to download and share with their students. "The Two Kids and Desert Town" is a model of a successful program that motivates struggling readers and writers. The project enabled students to think like writers, to apply their learning strategies and to organize and express their thinking. Students wrote for an authentic audience and purpose outside the confines of the classroom. Plus it integrated technology, collaboration and the chance for students to reflect on themselves as learners. Having published this book and knowing that people around the world have downloaded it - these student will forever see themselves as writers!
