South Book Reviews
South by Ernest Shackleton Book Summary
An Apple Books Classic edition.
“Huge blocks of ice, weighing many tons, were lifted into the air and tossed aside as other masses rose beneath them. We were helpless intruders in a strange world, our lives dependent upon the play of grim elementary forces that made a mock of our puny efforts.”
In the canon of true stories of adventure and exploration, Ernest Shackleton’s first-person account of the Endurance expedition stands alone. In 1914, Shackleton’s crew set out to traverse the Antarctic continent When their ship was crushed between massive sheets of ice, hope soon gave way to terror. After being trapped on a floe, Shackleton’s men risk life and limb to reach the shores of a desolate outcrop, where a small group sets out in search of rescue.
Shackleton documents their harrowing journey in an uncovered lifeboat, enduring freezing weather and unimaginable conditions. This riveting life-and-death drama is a testament to the human spirit. It will keep you glued to the page from beginning to end.

A true adventure in amazing detail!. Herein lies a tale of overcoming adversity that is beyond normal human endeavors.
Bear with it…. I was glad to have the ability to look up unfamiliar terms easily, because I was reading on my phone. Took until around page 30-something to really get engaged, but this is a truly interesting read. It doesn’t bog down in the minutiae and becomes very readable. Definitely recommend
Fantastic account of such brave explorers. This book is so well written I could hardly take a break from reading it. I encourage you to read it. The conditions in the Antarctic were difficult beyond imagination, and the tales of the creativity, determination and loyalty of the men are very interesting. WOW!
Fascinating Read. Despite its age, this true tale is absolutely riveting. How could a team of mortal beings survive this disastrous ordeal? A truly inspiring story of the courage of the human spirit tortured by extreme conditions. I couldn’t put it down.
An epic adventure!. I liked the authenticity of this narrative; it contains the source autobiographical logs from this Antarctic expedition.
South. Excellent book, very good detail in all expects, highly recommended.

10/10. Hero’s and great people titles should be saved for persons like Shackleton. A true leader and a story written that is worth reading for the best of humanity
Thoroughly enjoyable book. Not the easiest book to read due to the language of the early 1900 and it’s clearly not written with the modern bias towards disposable literature. That said as a tale of endurance, intelligence and a test of mans limits it is thoroughly recommended.

Heroism. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. A bit slow to start as mentioned, but an utterly amazing true story of grit, determination and the will to survive. The world needs strong masculine men!
Fascinating Read. Although a little slow at the beginning and briefly at the end I found this to be a super fun read. Good amount of detail and crazy to read about how they did Antarctic exploration back in the day. Every once in a while Shackleton will jump back a couple months to provide additional details so watch out for that, but he always provides dates so its easy enough to catch. Despite these flaws I would highly recommend the book to anyone looking for their next informative yet enjoyable read.
