Masterpiece!. This novel, no matter how short, had the particularity that I could see the scenes clearly in my mind, and I could feel the dreary dichotomy of Carmilla's character from the very first night. You can FEEL the gloom, you can totally place yourself in Laura's position, a feat not many terror writers achieve.
Superb. I learned about this gem after reading Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and seeing a profile about Stoker and influences of vampires. I dare to say this was superior to Stoker’s Dracula. Bravo!
Carmilla review. Very good story. A page turner! An easy read. Fun!
Absolutely fascinating.. The real vampire story. Carmilla haunts the mind, clings to the heart, and steals the soul.
Classic, haunting vampire tale. Many of the vampire tropes we attribute to Bram Stoker are present in this story, written a quarter-century before "Dracula". This account also provides more of the legend from the point of view of a victim, describing the sensations and effects (physical and emotional) she undergoes. It is well-written, accessible and haunting, a very enjoyable read.
Carmella. Scary but fun to read!
Amazing!!. I loved the pacing as well as the dialogue between the two women. I also love the genuine mixed emotions Laura feels when she thinks of Carmilla. It is a great read and I very much recommend it.
The book Carmilla was okay.. It was alright :')
Great original. This was the inspiration to Dracula no doubt and it shows. I liked the focused version through one character and predictable ending albeit well told.
Amazing Read!. Although I knew the plot of the book going into it, the writing style Le Fanu used was beautiful enough to entrance me and I truly fell in love with the story. It's definitely worth reading, especially those into the horror genre, and, in some ways, those into the gay/lesbian genre. The writing prose is amazing and the author is in my top ten of "word eloquence-ness", if I ever intended to make such a list. Such a beautiful book, and I definitely recommend it.
The Miniseries. Read this novella after becoming obsessed with the miniseries. It's a captivating and smooth read. Could be finished in a handful of hours. A refreshing, original take on what has been romanticized as Vampiric life.
Mircacrim. I loved this story. There are sublime passages of vivid description emotion. There’s a subtlety and delicacy of language that draws the reader in. One of the best vampire stories that I have ever read.
A great read to follow up Dracula. I recently read Dracula and have been looking for another novel to scratch the same itch. Even though Carmilla was published 30 years before Dracula I read it as a follow up and enjoyed it thoroughly. Carmilla is paced faster and is much shorter than Dracula but also has none of the skippable moments I found throughout Dracula. Would definitely recommend to fans of the gothic Dracula novel genre.
Classic. Must read.
Loved it!. It's a great book beautifully written. Twists and turns that weren't expected and some that were. I wasn't ready for it to end!
Amazing. This book is problay the best book I have ever read.

Too short + anticlimactic. A well written beginning to a good story, however it falls flat just as it gets to the meat of the plot.
Entrancing, but of its time. Certainly an interesting book, and it went by very fast. It has the classic conversational and almost rambling tone of many Gothic style books, but it works in the case of the story. I read it largely because of the web-series Carmilla, and a desire to see how Sapphic women were portrayed in media at the time — I was not surprised by the negative stance the author took. I found that, while the character of Carmilla was somewhat unlikeable at first, she became almost tragic towards the end. The tone certainly seemed melancholic, and it appears that the main character Laura does not totally see her as the monster she is portrayed to be... All in all, it is a interesting, suspenseful book, which leaves you with many questions once the story is done. It is a little uncomfortable to read a story with so much subtle homophobia, not to mention the flair of racism in the beginning (in the description of Matska) however it is worth the read as it embodies so much of the time — both the beautiful gothic writing, as well as the unfortunate attitudes. In all honesty, I prefer the web series, but this story has been remembered for good reason.
