The Trumpet-Major by Thomas Hardy Book Summary

It concerns the heroine, Anne Garland, being pursued by three suitors: John Loveday, the eponymous trumpet major in a British regiment, honest and loyal; his brother Bob, a flighty sailor; and Festus Derriman, the cowardly nephew of the local squire. Unusually for a Hardy novel, the ending is not entirely tragic; however, there remains an ominous element in the probable fate of one of the main characters.

A soap opera. So, Anne, a comely lass, is chased by three chaps. Festus, a big, stupid, cowardly bully (but he has a rich uncle), John, the miller's son (who is the trumpet-major), and Bob, the miller's other son (who is a sailor). Festus keeps popping up like a bad penny, trying to bully the poor wench into marrying him. John tries to woo Anne and succeeds, until Bob shows up. Anne always had a soft spot for Bob. But Bob turns up with an actress he intends to marry. John recognises the actress as a woman of low repute. So she leaves. Bob turns to Anne and John steps aside. Then Bob goes off to fight at Trafalgar on HMS Victory. Then he's getting married to a fishwife in Portsmouth. Then he isn't. So he turns to Anne again and John steps aside, again, like an idiot. And so on. It's a good book, enjoyable, with interesting anecdotes about the times. There's some proper good banter. But it's not much more than a soap opera

Trumpet Major. This was the first Thomas Hardy book I read as a teenager and I was hooked for life!

Hardy is incredible!. Thomas Hardy is an incredible writer! What a great book! After reading”Far from the madding crowd” , I really wanted to read another of his books, I thought this one looked good, and I was definitely not disappointed! Hardy is one of those amazingly talented writers who can write a book that is interesting and has a good storyline that keeps you gripped, as well as writing it WELL! This book is such a fabulous mixture of both! I strongly recommend this book to other readers! ❤️
