Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne Book Summary

An Apple Books Classic edition.

Many credit Jules Verne with inventing the genre of science fiction. In this novel, the author of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Around the World in 80 Days whisks us back in time and deep into the earth’s core. We follow eccentric scientist Otto Lidenbrock and his team on a dangerous exploration to an Icelandic volcano that he believes is actually a tunnel to the center of the earth. The deeper the group travels, the more treacherous the landscape becomes, littered with the bones of ancient animals and besieged by electrical storms hurling fireballs from above. But the biggest surprise of all may be waiting for them when they finally emerge…

Published in 1864, Journey to the Center of the Earth is riddled with scientific inaccuracies, all of which were based on the accepted theories of Verne’s day. That context only adds to the enjoyment of the story—and doesn’t detract from the amazing fact that Verne accurately predicted a staggering number of future inventions.

Ran long. Ran a little long and was not as exciting as I expected.

Lovely. Read it while in Iceland. Amazing!

Great classic. How did I miss reading this book growing up? Great, easy read

Good, but sometimes words children can not understand. Rated 10+ for me. It was hard for me to understand some of the words in a text, but overall it’s a very interesting book with, scientific facts theories and characters that all stay in your heart forever.

Quite a Journey. What a wonderful read! There is science, humor, tension, foreboding. Axel’s narration is a delightful balance between the exquisite and the banal. I’m encouraged to read more Verne.

Best book. Its one of the best books i have ever read. The author has maintained the suspense till last chapter and gave me goosebumps. Worth reading it

Niceuuuu. Nice book

Awesome. I love the adventure in the book so exciting!!!

Interesting historical science. Excellent adventure and interesting to see science viewed in the eyes of the 19th century

One of the best books for kids and all ages. This is probably one of the best books to read as a kid but also in any age group. This book was a gift for me when I was like 8 years old and it totally just opened my mind to a whole new possibility, its good ficition like best for kids. Years latter I was to find out that in Global culture (around the world) there exists actual myths of places or things at the center of the Earth. Now having been a grown man this totally just opened my mind even further, its like when having the conversation of the Birds and the Bees with your parents, you know the sex talk, first its got to be eased into and then explained throughly. Thats basically how I see this book as the Birds and the Bees if you compare it to the real Myths of places inside the Earth. Even so this book as a fictional tale and by itself is a just great, a total work of art because it only helps to imagine what could be or could have been something that is rooted in our mythology, even if none ever reads "ancient lost city stuff” they will still find this book unique and just wonderfull. By itself this book is classic.

A journey to the center of the earth. I loved it a lot when I read it

Journey to the end of the book that ended too soon.. About as fun and imaginative as a book can possibly get.

It was good. It was good It was good It was good Highly recommended!!!

Long story. I did not expect this work of fiction to be so filled with the scientific arguments of its time. The characters are not believable, so it was a struggle to finish this book. The book has been used and exploited by Hollywood to make movies that don’t follow the book’s story.

Charming journey. A lovely little romp on a journey to the centre of the earth.

Poor translation. The person who translated this book and the editor should find different jobs. I have never seen such poor grammar in a book. Whereas the original may be worth reading, I couldn’t continue with this version of the book. It’s an insult to English-speaking readers.
