The Racketeer by John Grisham Book Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “The Racketeer is guilty of only one thing: keeping us engaged until the very last page.”—USA Today • In the history of the United States, only four active federal judges have been murdered. Judge Raymond Fawcett has just become number five.

His body is found in his remote lakeside cabin. There is no sign of forced entry or struggle. Just two dead bodies: Judge Fawcett and his young secretary. And one large, state-of-the-art, extremely secure safe, opened and emptied.

One man, a former attorney, knows who killed Judge Fawcett, and why. But that man, Malcolm Bannister, is currently residing in the Federal Prison Camp near Frostburg, Maryland. Though serving time, Malcolm has an ace up his sleeve. He has information the FBI would love to know. Malcolm would love to tell them. But everything has a price—and the man known as the Racketeer wasn’t born yesterday.

THRILLING READ. The story kept me glued to the book until the very end.

Easy reading. This is a very good read. I did not want to put the book down.

Good beach read. By the writers own admission it did strain possibility just a bit. Still worthwhile. I just wish I was at the beach!

Loved this book. Very good read.

Page-turner. Grisham hits another bases-loaded home run. Very good story.

Riveting!. Having read many Grisham novels, I must say this is one of the best. The plot swirls around with little hints here and there. It is riveting to the last word.

Outstanding !!!!. The book was good ; well written and a page turner

The Racketeer. This is yet another nice read,,way to stick it to the man.

Interesting Story. Not a typical Grisham lawyer book. I enjoyed the plot development and twists.

Took me awhile to get into it, but ends up really good!. The first few chapters were really slow going. I wasn’t excited about reading it, like so many other books I’ve read. As the story progresses though, it gets more and more interesting.

My favorite so far. I’ve just recently discovered John Grisham so this is probably my 10th book of his and it’s easily been my favorite thus far. You really don’t know what’s coming or how it’s going to end and that’s the best part. I also love how he finishes his stories with the same energy he starts them, instead of just wrapping it up in a couple of pages and leaving tons of unanswered questions like a lot of writers tend to do.

The Racagerr. Kept me glued trying to figure out. When all came together was great but still held my breath. Do the FEDS like Grisham?

Another good one. I had a hard time putting this one down. The characters take so many risks that you just have to read “a few more pages” to see what will happen. A good yarn, with an original plot, and several good twists.

Great. Fast Action

Boring. Don’t bother. Bad read. Too predictable and too much filler. Endless paragraphs that provide nothing to story

So good, I have read it FIVE times!. No kidding. I loved this story to death. A guy screwed by the government gets unbelievable revenge. The plot is great. You keep wondering where it is going, and that creates suspense. It is also a very creative story, with a fun outcome. Worth your time and money. A very enjoyable read. A true masterpiece by Grisham

Great summer read. Don’t delay, get it now! Whether on a trip, the beach or in a hammock, this tale doesn’t disappoint.

V. Loved tRNA

The Racketeer. It was fun & I laughed but I no longer look to this author for serious fiction. If you are looking for a book to keep you involved past a 30 minute sit com look elsewhere.

playing for Pizza. not an overly complex story line - more like a bio of a troubled football player.

Entertaining. Nice to see Grisham stray from the courtroom a bit with this one. Admittedly far fetched fiction, but you get what you expect from him - an entertaining easy read.

Good stuff. Formulaic, but a fun page turner

True masterpiece. I enjoyed the book immensely, it is one of my favorite Grisham books. Like he always does, he carried it along beautifully throughout, and nocked you off your feet for a total unexpected ending. The pages just turn themselves.

The Racketeer. Grisham at his best. Never a dull moment

Great return to my passion of reading novels.. Great story.....ready for more of the same. BonnieV56

The Racketeer. Suspenseful, entertaining, delightful, satisfying, and last but not least, thought provoking. I enjoyed every minute of reading this book from the first page to the very last! Great job, John! Diane Anderson

entertaining. 3.5 stars Malcolm is very smart. I really liked how he worked everything out. I did figure a lot of what was happening out ahead of time and feel that some of the people he tricked should have been a little quicker on the uptake. Definitely entertaining.

The Racketeer. Another great novel by a great writer. Thanks John, maybe I should write fiction instead :-)

The Racketeer. Very predictable and Grisham uses over description to fill up pages to make the story longer as if like old backwoods farmers we are buying books. Read it if must read every thing this author dumps on the market. Me I'm quite disappointed as I have been a big fan.

Classic Grisham. If you hate the feds. This books for you.

Good read. Some slow and tedious details but the pace finally picks up.

This was fun!. Grisham always has me page turning late into the night. The Racketeer was no different & left me wishing at the end I could change places with Malcolm!

A fun read!. No courtroom drama and certainly not a typical Grisham tale. So many twists and turns that it took a while to realize I was reading a complex sting.

Disappointing. I miss the J. Grisham of old. So many of his newer books read like he had a deadline to meet for a publisher. This one is the same. Boring, not much character development, a step-by-step narration: “and then we did this. And then this happened. And then we reacted like this. So then they did that.” I’m done.

The Racketeer. This is by far one of John Grisham's best books written. It is a great self-proclaimed total work of fiction genius. About the only thing that's true in this book are the names of the cities and towns. If you hate the federal government's judicial system, you'll love the main character in this book and what they do. If only we all could dupe the FBI. I could not put the book down.

Robert b. Could not put it down. Finished in two days. Great journey through legal system, law and the essence of Humanity both ugly and beautiful.

Kept me reading. This kept my attention the entire time Great read and terrific purchase

The Racketeer. Awesome! I sure didn’t see it progressing like that! Sure worth the night’s sleep I lost reading it until the last page....even then, I wished there were more!

Good Read. One of the better Grisham Books I have read in awhile.

Easy read. As usual, Grisham’s book is a easy light read. The series of events is highly improbable, but the book was entertaining in a humorous way.

Wonderful. Completely engrossing and entertaining

Page turner. Classic Grisham... I couldn’t put it down

Not the best...... Missing the courtroom drama and what not still a decent read though good to kill a couple hours with...

The Racketeer. An OK read. Certainly not his best! Wordy with lots of unnecessary fill. I wouldn't ever take the time to read it again or recommend it to others. It is one of those books where you are glad it's over!

Lazy writing. At the end of this book, Grisham refers to himself as a lazy writer, and that is how this book reads.

Not so much. A little too predictable and the self-righteousness is a little tiring

Great read. Loved the story. Good characters and nicely tied up at the end. Enjoyed it. Nice work Grisham.

Political comments. Good. As usual. But Grisham should leave out the field of far-right political comments: this seems totally out-of-place in this easy beach reading.

Meh. Lazy writing, underwhelming and predictable story. Could not wait for it to end so I could go back to reading good books.

A total page-turner.. Couldn’t put it down!

lazy. In his author's notes, he refers to "the laziest of authors" and must be talking about himself...this one was an unremarkable bland and otherwise forgettable time waster when compared to other spellbinding works of art from John Grisham...not worth the effort of turning the pages.

Great book. An amazing read. It just goes on and on, very hard to let go. Addicting and fun to read. Should definetley make a movie.

Good read. Easy to read and I flew through it.

The racketeer. As with most Grisham books, this was definitely a page turner. Great characters and delicious twists here and there to keep you guessing. And a satisfying ending - enough said. I can't wait until the next one!

The master has proven himself once again. The master of suspense is at it again. I could have betted on a different ending. The suspense was thrilling. I will definitely read this again! John Grisham

Great story!!. Stunning as always.

A real page turner. I looked forward to getting back to this book and learning what element of this clever scheme was going to be unveiled next. Highly recommended.

Brilliant!. Great read! This book really had me in suspense. I can see this booking becoming a great movie. Amazing just amazing!
