Lord Foul's Bane Book Reviews
Lord Foul's Bane by Stephen R. Donaldson Book Summary
“Covenant is [Stephen R.] Donaldson's genius!”—The Village Voice
He called himself Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever, because he dared not believe in this strange alternate world on which he suddenly found himself.
Yet the Land tempted him. He had been sick; now he seemed better than ever before. Through no fault of his own, he had been outcast, unclean, a pariah. Now he was regarded as a reincarnation of the Land's greatest hero—Berek Halfhand—armed with the mystic power of White Gold. That power alone could protect the Lords of the Land from the ancient evil of the Despiser, Lord Foul. Except that Covenant had no idea how to use that power. . . .

Boring. To be honest I could not finish this book, even after several attempts. It is so boring, not very well thought out or written. The main character I wish had died in the first paragraph. The other characters are uninteresting. Why does it say there is no cure to leprasy ?? There has been one for a long time now. anyway just don't buy this it was a waste of money
Waste of time. Blatantly plagiarizes Tolkien in everything but the character....who is an insufferable coward who whines, complains about being a leper every other sentence, and hisses ''Hellfire!'' with every breath. To sum up this book in the words of Thomas Covenant ''DONT TOUCH ME!''
Grateful Reader. Lord Foul's Bane and the entire Covenant series is without doubt a masterpiece. Mr. Donaldson stands with my favorite authors, Jordan, Tolkien, Martin, Goodkind, Brinn, Herbert, Niven, and Sanderson. His ability to illicit a wide range of powerful emotions with his writing is second to none. All human traits are alive in each and every one of us. A person of great courage in battle might act cowardly when asked to speak before an audience. A person afraid to fight might jump into a raging flood to save a child. The frustrating mixture of weakness, insecurity, and fear in Thomas Covenant make his moments of strength and clarity all the more powerful. I am as I have been for 29 years waiting with great anticipation for the next Donaldson book "The Last Dark". Thank you Mr. Donaldson.
I Forgot. Saw the title and remembered I had read it a long time ago. So long ago in fact, that I forgot the book began with a brutal rape perpetrated by the main character. Sorry, I can go no further.
Incredible. I recently purchased Against All Things Ending after randomly checking into Donaldson's works. I hadn't made it past "What Has Gone Before" when it occured to me that it had been 32 years since I first read Lord Fouls Bane. I decided that it had been so long since I began the journey with Thomas Covenant and Donaldson that I would re-read the series. I am glad that I did. Oddly, it was like reading a good book for the first time while being reacquainted with old friends. Thanks Stephen...looking forward to the rest!
Solid. A strong, steady opening for the original trilogy. To say it's a Tolkien rip off is unfair. It is a bit slow and plodding at times, and the main character is unlikeable at first, but you must forgive him and his situation. This a very human book and not for the timid. Donaldson is Fantasy's version of John Steinbeck.
Lord Foul's Bane. This was the very first fantasy book that i was ever introduced to so it holds a Very special place in my heart! It marries the best of both fantasy worlds the present and the "past". To be the first fantasy book that i ever read it has some very grown up topics in it. Thomas is at the same time a very deeply scared individual and one who rises to the "heroic" within this book and the rest of the series. In the real world he is a person who really isnt treated as a person because he has leprosy. When he regains all of his senses when he is transported to the Land he does horrible violation of what it is to be a person and in spite of this act you grow and learn with him. This book is my favorite book of all time because of how you have conflicting emotions about the main character and the journey he embarks upon.
Bleah!. Hated this flat, uninteresting Tolkien rip-off with it's ever annoying anti-hero.
Finally!. One of the Greatest stories ever .... So good to finally see in this format! Outshines even Tolkien.
Fantastic read. Grabs you quick and keeps you throughout. Can't wait to read the next one!
