Red Sparrow by Jason Matthews Book Summary

Now a major motion picture starring Jennifer Lawrence and Joel Edgerton!

From the New York Times bestselling author and veteran CIA officer Jason Matthews comes the electrifying modern spy thriller Red Sparrow.

In contemporary Russia, state intelligence officer Dominika Egorova has been drafted to become a “Sparrow”—a spy trained in the art of seduction to elicit information from their marks. She’s been assigned to Nathaniel Nash, a CIA officer who handles the organization’s most sensitive penetration of Russian intelligence. The two young intelligence officers, trained in their respective spy schools, collide in a charged atmosphere of tradecraft, deception and, inevitably, a forbidden spiral of carnal attraction that threatens their careers and the security of America’s valuable mole in Moscow.

For fans of John le Carré and Ian Fleming and featuring “high-level espionage, pulse-pounding danger, sex, double agents, and double crosses” (Nelson DeMille), Red Sparrow is a timely and electrifying thriller that is impossible to put down.

Red Sparow. At about a page turner. Jason Mathews has out all of his insider knowledge to great benefit in a book that had me turning the pages faster than I thought possible on an iPad! A super story.

Excellent. What a great read. Authentic, detailed but at a good pace. Good characters and a believable story. And I thought the Cold War had ended! Oh and I need to try the recipes!

Great Read!. Hard to put down.

Red Sparrow. Rarely do you get to read a spy novel that lets you know the author has walked the walk - as well as this one does. And while His prose is unlikely ever to be confused with that of Furst or Le Carre, he walks the streets of the same neighborhood. What this compelling read lacks in literary polish, it more than makes up for in believability and character.

A Beautiful book.. This is a superb story, beautifully told. I enjoyed every moment, and hope there are many more to come from this wonderful new writer.

Longest run-on sentence this year?. One sentence consists of 243 words. Yes. I counted. 243 words, without a period. Near the end. When he’s driving to the swap... Frankly I didn’t love this book. I didn’t hate it, but I found it mediocre. It has its moments, but then digresses into long, rambling narratives... up and down...

Great read, too bad he sold it be made into an awful movie. Read three of the books, really good. Was excited to see the movie from the first book and was so disappointed. Terrible. Didn't the author ask to read the screen play before he agreed to sell the movie rights? What a mistake. Now I doubt any of the other books in the sequel will be made or will be any good either.

One of the best spy novels...ever!. I am always in search of a good spy/intrigue novel. This one over delivers with convoluted yet authentic twists, rich in culture and character. Can't wait for his next one!!!

Awesome! Four and a half stars!. Have already red the sequel, which is even better. Great writing, great insight, great plot, great characters, great style! All of this in a genre that has, of late, become mediocre at best. A breath of fresh air! Harkins back to early Clancy, Ludlum and Higgins; with less disillusionment than Le Carre, but with much of the same character depth and plot intrigue.

Jaw DROPPING. Forced myself to read this book before watching the movie. Now refusing to watch the movie because I don’t want to ruin the masterpiece this author produced. Fantastic story, at times many details for the sake of details but later on they make more sense. My jaw dropped at the end and I stared at a wall for five minutes trying to gather my thoughts. 10/10 recommend, I haven’t read something so captivating in a while.

Red Sparrow. Outstanding read! Would have never expected such an accomplished work from first time author! The 33 year CIA career lends so much authenticity, I literally couldn't put this book down( but had to for sleeps sake only!). As a 50 year reader of spy and espionage genre, this book amongst the top 5!

Hats Off!. Finally an author I can get behind. I’m excited to read the next two books in this trilogy and hope that there are plenty more to come. My only recommendation to anyone reading this review is skip the movie and pick up this book instead.

Red Sparrow. Excellent book! If I could give it 6 stars I would. The detail in the novel reflects the author's experience as a CIA agent and he weaves together a brilliant tale that keeps you turning the page. I cannot wait for the movie and more importantly, the sequel. Best book I've read in the last year!

first i get to know this book is because of jennifer lawrence. Wow, this is SO detailed and amazing. If you love books about spycraft and CIA work, you will appreciate the complexity and detail of Jason Matthews’ RED SPARROW, which is told from the pov of Dominica, a Russian girl who is trained as a “sparrow” or Russian intelligence officer who will spy and run honey pot operations, seducing her targets and gathering information, and Nate, a CIA officer who had been in Moscow managing informants until one day he is nearly caught and his cover is blown. She is sent to extract information from him. He is told to develop her as an agent. But are real feelings starting to form? This is just a really cool book, especially if you ever loved the TV show “The Americans” and questions of real or not real. Long, complex, and with an interesting array of emotions that keep you invested in seeing what comes next. And I just loved Dominica and Nate! So many twists and turns as this winds its way towards the end. Definitely reading the next book in the series!

Red Sparrow. One of the most intriguing post Cold War spy books I've ever read. The characters are memorable. I can't wait for the sequel which no doubt is coming!!

Loved it!!. Suspenseful and well written. Many twists and turns. Will look for other books by this author.

Waste of time / money. Its very very very bad i love Jennifer but her acting wasn't that good she was acting like a robot during the movie... i dont recommend this movie at all

Glad I read!!!. GOOD READ!!! What a gifted writer!

Excellent Read. Great spy novel from a writer that I never read before. What a great surprise to learn that I couldn't put it down. I hope there is a follow up. The characters left off in a great position or a sequel. I will certainly be looking for his next book.

Sequel please!. Loved the book - exciting, unexpecting, good U.S. vs Russia spy novel

Red Sparrow. Too many alphabet soup organizations, ended with indication of sequel. Interesting read, but weak character development.

Red sparrow. Fantastic read...best real action spy novel ever

Red Sparrow. Outstanding book!!! I loved this book, and really enjoyed the additional touch of recipes that brought me back to reality after an exciting and sometimes brutally scary event in the book. I also loved the politics that helped me understand the really tough and difficult lives of spies. DIVA is an awesome protagonist, who must also have a brilliant purple aura herself!

Red Sparrow. One of best reads ever. Enticing from the get go. On the edge of your seat non stop. Did not want the story to end. Great characters that pull and envelope you into the story. Vivid. Hope there is a sequel. This is a book I will read again.

Gripping exciting stunning book!!!. Could not put the book down!! You simply must have this book!!! Period.

Fantastic!. A realistic spy thriller. It's not a James Bond or Bourne which are more fantasy than reality (but fun nonetheless), it's like le Carre but far better.

A great read. Enjoyed the book. Compelling and hard to put down. Came off authentic due to author's 33 year career with the CIA.

Loved it. Just looking for a good novel & came across Red Sparrow. Reviews were positive so downloaded to my ipad, next thing I know I couldn't put it down, Great story & characters. Can't wait to get into Palace of Treason. Thank you Mr. Mattews & thanks for your 33 years of service.

Excellent.. A great thriller. Full of intrigue and espionage. A good summer read.

Frustratingly slow. Very disappointed, like a bad superhero movie with way too much origin story and not enough action.

Excellent read. One of the most engrossing spy thrillers I've read in a long time. The characters are well developed; I felt like I knew them by the time I finished the book. Definitely worth a read, and I can't wait for the sequel!

Fascinating. Intriguing characters set in believable landscapes and difficult situations. Some act instinctively, some professionally, and some sadistically. All ring true. In order to sell this book, there is sex, love and action, but the meat of a good fiction novel-- character development and pictures and ideas on the written page springing to life and transporting the reader to scenes otherwise restricted from everyday life-- is present in spades. I look forward to more from this author as he matures in his second career; his first was as a CIA operative in "denied areas." This book is his métier.

Not good. Purchased based on its paid for advertising which does little to explain the fantasy plot. My mistake. Suggest you be wary of purchasing unless you are interested in a not real story with a women character with superwomen powers that was improperly advertised as spy reality. Could not stand reading so deleted before half way. Wasted $$.

Fast paced. You are absorbed pretty quickly into a fast paced story with plenty of action. The violence is a little graphic but the characters are like able and that's part of the pull.

Red Sparrow. The best book of this genre that I have read since LeCarre's classic spy novels. Engrossing, fast-paced, well-developed plot and characters. I highly recommend it.

Red sparrow. Didn't expect much but boy was I surprised & pleased! Great story line but more importantly extremely well written. Couldn't put it down! Thanks. Dr Roy Appleton,Jackson,Tennessee.

Could not put it down. For the last third of the book, I stayed up in the middle of the night to see how everything would go and I saw the movie 🤪

Red Sparrow. Excellent page turner. The author's experience in the real world of contemporary espionage and"the trade-craft" is clear and adds immeasurably to the sense of authenticity of the plot, even if it stretches plausibility to the limit. As I put the book down at 2.00 am I am fully satisfied that I got my money's worth and will look for more from this author Geoff E (Oakville, Canada)
