The A Song of Ice and Fire Series by George R.R. Martin Book Summary

For the first time, all five novels in the epic fantasy series that inspired HBO’s Game of Thrones are together in one eBook bundle. An immersive entertainment experience unlike any other, A Song of Ice and Fire has earned George R. R. Martin—dubbed “the American Tolkien” by Time magazine—international acclaim and millions of loyal readers. Now this bundle collects the entire monumental cycle in the most convenient format available:

A GAME OF THRONES
A CLASH OF KINGS
A STORM OF SWORDS
A FEAST FOR CROWS
A DANCE WITH DRAGONS

“One of the best series in the history of fantasy.”—Los Angeles Times

Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King’s Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert’s name. There his family dwells in peace and comfort: his proud wife, Catelyn; his sons Robb, Brandon, and Rickon; his daughters Sansa and Arya; and his bastard son, Jon Snow. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse—unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season.

Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances. Now Robert is riding north to Winterfell, bringing his queen, the lovely but cold Cersei, his son, the cruel, vainglorious Prince Joffrey, and the queen’s brothers Jaime and Tyrion of the powerful and wealthy House Lannister—the first a swordsman without equal, the second a dwarf whose stunted stature belies a brilliant mind. All are heading for Winterfell and a fateful encounter that will change the course of kingdoms.

Meanwhile, across the Narrow Sea, Prince Viserys, heir of the fallen House Targaryen, which once ruled all of Westeros, schemes to reclaim the throne with an army of barbarian Dothraki—whose loyalty he will purchase in the only coin left to him: his beautiful yet innocent sister, Daenerys.

“Long live George Martin . . . a literary dervish, enthralled by complicated characters and vivid language, and bursting with the wild vision of the very best tale tellers.”—The New York Times

Amazing. Great book series, absolutely love it. However, if you're a Game of Thrones watcher, I would wait until that's finished. I absolutely loved the show, but reading the books has diminished the show. You should wait until that's over in my opinion before you start reading this. Only complaint is the chapters on this iBook don't have names, just numbers.

Game of Thrones. A Masterpiece. Drags you in and will not let you go.

Highly recommended. This is quite possibly the best book series that I have ever read, and I'm not saying that lightly!

Excellent. Somehow George R. R. Martin presents a plot that is well thought out, thoroughly explained, and carefully calculated but is able to bend it and shape into mystery. Reading these books, you learn much and more from them than the show. But you also open up to the world that the show didn't cover, the characters, events, and everything else. I loved everything about these five books, and though I hate to say it, I have but few clues as to where Martin is taking our beloved characters. But I cannot wait to find out. 10/10

Game of Thrones Series. I NEEEED George RR to Finish Book NUMBER 6 ASAP!!! This Book Series is TOO GOOD and I need my Jon Snow FIX!! I must know what happen to him!!

Name the chapters accordingly!!!. The way the chapters are numbered in this iBook collection is VERY frustrating! The character names & chapter number would be ideal -- please update this and I'll update my review accordingly.

From the very beginning. It doesn’t take an entire to tell a good reading apart from the rest. This by far the greatest author I have heard from in a long time. Many have come before him, particularly in the romantic languages. I have not scratched the surface, yet I am extremely pleased. I wish to savor every paragraph as I am in no rush to complete the volumes. Thank you most sincerely, Steve A.

A Great book for story and studying. This is a trully awesome book not only to enjoy the storyline and plotting, but also to study english vocabulary as a foreigner.

Amazing book with crappy formatting. GRRM did a fantastic job, this is one of my favorite books. The problem is the way it is formatted as an iBook. The table of contents is kind of annoying and when I bought the book I didn't realize it was one single unit.

What can be said?. Unparalleled.

Buy this. Seriously

Awesome books.. Loved them can’t wait for the next one to come out.

Disappointing. Downloaded this series and only the first 6 chapters of book one are showing.

Will not load for me. I listened to this years ago. Bought the series.. I’d like to listen to this again. But it will not download for me.

Unreal unrelenting unbelievable unstoppable. This is the most amazing unbelievable series I have ever read . GRRM wrote the best fantasy series of our time . I started with the show and I found the books to be much more riveting . It truly draws you in and doesn't let go . Every chapter has an importance to it . Everyone says there's no many characters and that GRRM goes into to much detail about each character but it each character has some sort of importance to the story even the most minor characters . It truly makes for a great read . Highly recommend this series to anyone who watches the show and to people who hasn't seen the show I would tell to read the books first . Also with two more books to come out in the series . I can't wait to see where GRRM take his great series next . Winds of Winter can't come soon enough , and A Dream of Spring is way to far away that I hope he's still alive to finish . It would be a shame if he passes before the end of the series . And has to have people finish the series for him off his notes .

Fantastic Books. "We are are the Watchers on the Wall..." This series has become my favorite story since I discovered it only a year ago. I admit I saw the HBO show first, but it drew me to the books, and I love them both, though the books far more. Some people dislike Martin's detailed descriptions of people and settings, but personally I prefer them. It shows his care for the world he made, and helps me envision the various places and people in vivid detail. There has also been complaints about the 4th and 5th books, as some are confused by the way they tell the story. Truthfully, it's simpler than it seems. The fourth and fifth books take place simultaneously, with each book telling different characters stories. For example, Character A has his story told in Book 4, while Character B has his told in Book 5. Both A and B have stories taking place at the same time, more or less. The reason for this split was, (in Martin's own words), to have the fourth book have a more interesting ending. Else wise, the story would have dropped off in the middle of its progression, or been incredibly long and contained all the contents of both books. Book 5 also continues on after the events in 4 after awhile, and brings back some of those characters as the story continues past their ending point in 4. Hopefully I have not clouded the fact that these are great books, we'll worth reading if you're into books and fantasy. The world Martin has wrought is a rich one, and as engrossing as a story can be.

Good but a long slog. I have finally finished the set. Unlike the author, I will keep my words brief. This is excellent reading, however one should be prepared for the full breadth of the undertaking should one choose to walk down this road. It took me a year to read all of these books (usually 20 minutes a day of reading). I’m glad I finished it but I have to say, I do almost feel like the author feels compelled the story of every single day of a hundred different characters in great detail over the span of many years. That’s a huge and frankly unecessary adventure. I think the entire story could be told in half or even less than half as many pages. True fans will disagree and that’s ok. I think I am like most readers where I got lost too often for me to really love this, but it is good writing and I’m glad I did it. Looking forward to the final novels.

No words to describe how amazing this is. Just perfect

A Song of Ice and Fire series. Awesomely captivating! Hope the next book is published soon.

Great Read b/c it’s a great puzzle. George RR Martin put together a great story, then broke it into a thousand puzzle pieces and pulled us into it all with great storytelling. This series is about power and human nature, with a medieval yet otherworldly setting. It has adult themes and it’s own history yet also has its own mythology, magic and dragons. While the HBO TV series is great, the books are better and far richer. It’s a lot of addictive reading, but you’ll be happy you read it. Note that the TV story lines have moved past book 5; readers anxiously await GRRM’s final book(s) in the series, which I plan to read even if the TV show is concluded.

Couldn’t get enough. Couldn’t get enough!

Flawless. An enticing story filled with horror, love, fear, 200 other adjectives and plot twists that will keep drawing you in regardless of what you like in a book. This one has it all and is still authentic. A must read

Meh. I can't force myself to read it. It's not that bad but there's just so many more books out there that have characters u can actually care about. It's like a medieval soap opera. And I just don't care

Can't believe how amazing these books are!!!!. Can't wait for book six to come out.

Epic!. Epic!

A song of ice and fire. I find that this book is really great from the depth and detail of the world itself to the intensity of how the houses and history make changes to the book now. Daenerys is definitely my favorite character talk about mother of dragons.

Unfinished. I wish I had known these books lacked an ending before I started buying them. These stories are great, very well written, but the last 2 books in the series have been overdue by a decade or more. The later ones in this unfinished series became so complicated that the individual characters’ stories were split between two books which only added to the confusion. No wonder he cannot finish. I would give these books 5 stars for the quality of the writing and the story but 1 star for the deception and disappointment of wasting my money on something that’s unfinished. Like the HBO series, the ending (or lack thereof) disappoints. Be prepared to be left hanging.

Best book series ever. George RR Martin is a genius this is by far the best fantasy series ever written. He definitely beats Tolkien in many ways. Can't wait for The Winds of Winter.

More Books than Needed. I’d give the first two books a five star but then it wanes to a one star for the other three. Too many characters for me to keep track of but a fun read all the same.

Outstanding.. A great accompaniment for those who never miss an episode of the HBO production. It fills in any gaps and further explains the story. Well written.👍🏽👍🏽

Breathtakingly Amazing . Beyond words. Best book series I’ve ever read and probably ever will.

Only the first book available?. I paid $40 only for the first book to be the only one that shows up to read… what? Can anyone explain why this is?

A song of ice and fire. Page turner from beginning to end!

Make sure u down load the the Version u want…ie audio for listening and book for reading. With that being said the series is infinitely infatuating while being simultaneously stimulating and gripping to make you want to keep turning the pages to find out what happens next. George is an amazing writer I just hope he finishes asoif…all I’m saying ….so my answer is, Yes! get it! You’ll love it!!!

George R. R. Martin PLEASE. George R. R. Martin please save us from D&D ! They are trash and they will destroy your world.

Absolutely mind numbing. I was introduced to the series by HBO’s show. I wanted to learn more about the characters and parts of the story I was sure I missed. So I bought the series and was ever so disappointed. It is a complex storyline. There are many characters and twists, much like the show. However Martin’s desire to fill pages with so much boring nonsense that ads nothing to the story makes reading a nightmare. I mean how many times is it necessay to discuss that a character “broke his or her fast" and what they ate? I am stunned that some people seriously proclaim to like his writing style. Its tedious and incredibly inane. I will stick to the HBO show and find authors to read who know how to write interesting fiction.

Awesome books !. Would read it all over again

Greatest Fantasy Series Ever Written!. You will laugh and you will cry. You will feel disgusted and you will feel memorized by the beauty described. You will have nightmares and sometimes you will jump for joy and excitement. These books are a journey of mystery, love, and hate. They embody reality and life. People complain about the plot building but all the chapters have something important in them. Have you ever read any Anne Rice books? They are really good but she goes on and on about details making it hard to be into them. This is not the case in ASOIAF.

Reads like a screenplay. ...but still somehow is literarily rewarding. Each and every reader will impress their own imaginations into this kind of prose, which works well sometimes and not others. Either way, it's an infectiously gripping tale with clear rewards waiting at the end. It's also refreshingly truthful with human motivations and the often suicidal results they create. A must read for non-fantasy readers looking for fun (read: most Tolkein and Lewis types).

Game of Thrones collection. Compelling, well written . Regardless if this genre is not your type this collection read like a hot knife through butter . One of the best reads I have had the pleasure to partake of

Does not live up to the hype. VERY surprised to see that no one else agrees. These books are far to long based on their content. They are long and slow and very boring. Martin describes basically every tree in unnecessary and excruciating detail... Honestly he doesn't even do a great job of it either, someone should really give George a thesaurus! To give him the benefit of the doubt I even continued on to see if the other books got better and they didn't. The few parts where there is action are so few and far between that I find myself drifting off unable to retain. Also as a side note, if you want to try to listen instead, it would be a great way to put yourself to sleep. WORST AUDIO BOOK READER EVER.

Unbelievabley great. Amazing storytelling! Amazing characters. Can't wait to see what is in store for us next. Winter is coming.

I'm in love.. I knew it was going to be good before I read it, people used to tell me how amazing the show was. They were wrong, it's beyond amazing. I get sucked in every time I open the books. The story is like non other. The characters, oh god the characters, are so vivid and descriptive. This book is a roller coaster of events. First I'm imagining the amazing dialogue and the next um crying. I hate and love this series. I recommend this to everyone I talk too. DEFINITELY worth the $20. I'm eagerly awaiting the next book. Come on George RR Martin!!!!

Amazing. Great read, recommend to anyone looking for a book to read

Tired Eyes, Neglected Husband, Kids, and Pets. Anything I write will just be a repeat of something someone else has written. This is a fact. I have read and reread, dissected, digested, ingested, and reabsorbed all five books and am continuing to do so. At this point there has to be something else to do. But, I can’t do it now, I have to go back and reread chapter 9, A DANCE WITH DRAGONS, where I think I read Jon Snows mother was the daughter of a fisherman!

Great books need separation. I love the books they're great amazing story and plot lines, but with the iBooks bundled version it would be nice if they were separated when you select it not just one massive book that you have to scroll through. Please Apple change this it would make it more efficient if once you select the game of thrones series from the menu that it opened a folded of sorts and from there you selected what book you wanted rather than scrolling and scroll through well over 5k of pages.

Game of 5 different books. I think I started reading the series about 6 months ago, then when I was in the 4th book, I heard a 6th book was coming out. So after 5 books and 9177 pages on my iPad, I still have many questions as to how it ends.

Winter is coming. Keeps you on your toes and you never know what what to expect next

A song of ice and fire. That can't be the end. It just can't be!!!

Speechless. Even though it can be slow at times, this book series is quite a ride and I can’t wait for more. That is is if GRR Martin ever finishes the series.

HBO compared to the book!. If you thought the show was good! Try reading to book. I started the 1st book and, now I'm finishing the 5th!! Amazing book. Expect the unexpected!!

Exciting. An amazing tale by an amazing author! Never afraid to do the unexpected, his entire series keeps you captivated. A true page turner, I find myself unable to stop at chapter's end! Just to reiterate the previous comment; Buy it. Winter is coming.

Just wow !!!. It's Lord of the Rings for adults. Less boring (or lengthy) by far. I'm a fierce Tolkien fan but Mr. Martin, you are my new hero. Buy it. Winter is coming.

A classic. I have loved this series for many years and I’m so glad I have a digital copy I can carry with me anywhere! The TV show will never do this story justice. I just wish George would hurry up and finish it already.

Don't understand. The books are enjoyable - but I don't understand why the digital copy of this set costs $10 more than the printed and bound paper copy.

A song of ice and fire. A great read even if you have seen the HBO series.

Great read. In my opinion, this is the greatest series of books ever written.

Possibly Flawed for being too long. Excellent character studies. But if the series goes beyond 7 books, then this epic is too long and will become a study in chaos

Great novel!!. Best fiction by far!

The best.. This is one of the greatest series I have ever read. I can't wait for the next book. This takes me back to my childhood of reading Harry Potter and waiting for each book to come out. What a brilliant author. If you like the show, you will love these books. Read them and your understanding of everything will be much better.
