No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai & Donald Keene Book Summary

The poignant and fascinating story of a young man who is caught between the breakup of the traditions of a northern Japanese aristocratic family and the impact of Western ideas.

Mine has been a life of much shame. I can’t even guess myself what it must be to live the life of a human being.

Portraying himself as a failure, the protagonist of Osamu Dazai’s No Longer Human narrates a seemingly normal life even while he feels himself incapable of understanding human beings. His attempts to reconcile himself to the world around him begin in early childhood, continue through high school, where he becomes a “clown” to mask his alienation, and eventually lead to a failed suicide attempt as an adult. Without sentimentality, he records the casual cruelties of life and its fleeting moments of human connection and tenderness.

Still one of the ten bestselling books in Japan, No Longer Human is an important and unforgettable modern classic: “The struggle of the individual to fit into a normalizing society remains just as relevant today as it was at the time of writing.” (The Japan Times)

Sad but Essential. The end of this book was sad, the beginning of this book was sad, and the middle of this book was sad. In fact, I do not believe there was a happy moment the entire book. Written in the form of three notebooks, "No Longer Human" follows the story of a young man in Japan. From his unenthusiastic childhood to his disappointing adulthood, he lives a sad and lonely life full of hatred for human beings. Even so, this young misanthrope lives a busy, touching, and disastrous life.

Loved it. It was hard to understand at times but still enjoyable.

The Struggles for Us. We all go through the hardships of finding hope. Some do, some don’t. We don’t really get to hear from those who don’t though. Reading how this man struggled from the very beginning to the end really resembles some of our failing lives. I believe he wanted us to learn from the mistakes he was neglectful to move pass from. Real good book, hands down.

No Longer Human. Didn’t get it. I know this was supposed to be a good read and the author evidently is well-known and appreciated, but I didn’t enjoy reading it nor did I learn anything from it.

Slay for depression. I love sad books and about death or as peoples call it suicide and slay to Osamu Dazai

Great book. Dazai and Yozo deserved better lives.

No Longer Human. Amazing book

Repetitive. I enjoyed the book overall I just disliked how repetitive he explained his emotions and how it was almost always the same setting

Kinship follows. I am utterly amazed by this book. From the opening paragraphs I felt the story being narrated to me was my own story, my mother’s story, then my brother’s story and back to my own. I identified with every page put on display. This is why I read fiction! The truth of one’s fabricated existence on the page belies the truth of my own existence.

Book rate. Best book and sad

I’d give it 5 starts but. Do not get me wrong, this is a very well written book but it is NOT for the people who like more light hearted stories. It is a very sad tale and I wouldn’t recommend it to someone currently dealing with depression.

A life without love is confusing. What a sad story so many people who live without any truth to guide them

stunning autobiography. its crazy how everything in the book still happens regularly.

Well-Crafted Book.. This was neither a feel-good, satisfying, or easy read. However, it was a good and well-thought-out book. Immediately after finishing this book, I had to read an analysis of it. It is easy to feel a sort of pity for Yozo, but it is hard to like him as his decisions became harmful and were disagreeable.

Pitiful human being. Yozo is the most debased human being. His mind is detached and floating above him, unable to confront himself with others. What a mad lad. FIVE STARS!

great. this was a amazing read yet quite sad as expected. some parts were confusing to me so i decided to pick this up again in high school or college. but i loved it and i’ll definitely read again!

Super intriguing life of an extreme INTP. I recommend this to everyone

Heartwrenchingly relatable. I’m honestly feeling so defeated after finishing this book. I’ve struggled with mental health and feeling like I could never live a normal life, suicide attempts and the feeling of alienation makes the narrator sickeningly relatable. I cant help but relate to him but at the same time be disgusted by him and in turn by myself. This book truly shares the experience of what it’s like living mentally ill and unable to relate with those around you. Down to the feeling of isolation and hopelessness. Truly an amazing book if you can handle the emotions it’ll put you through.

Sad and amazing. I'm at loss for words, amazing book by an amazing author. Sad and touching.

good book :). not too hard to understand besides some parts. will break your heart but i’m sure you’ll finish the book having gained at least one thing from reading it.

Great book. Originally heard about this book from a YouTuber named Wendigoon. He described the book as being eye opening, and honestly, the book was amazing. I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a good read.

My favorite book of all time.. Osamu Dazai was a tragic genius. He was able to encapsulate the feelings of isolation and disassociation so vividly that it made me think of alot of situations in my life that were similar.

Inside the mind of a man. Very interesting point of view on life, relationships, aspirations, careers, family, and substance use. Even though the books are dated to the 30s I think they’re still very relevant and relatable to today.

Hi. Ok so I read this because I like bungo stray dogs. I saw people say “this book changed me” or something weird like that. It made me mad. It was very misogynistic. @higuchisolos on TikTok

yum. i js read it cuz of bsd💪

the best. immaculate description of the apparent subhuman mind
