A Week in Winter by Maeve Binchy Book Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the acclaimed author of Circle of Friends • In a small town on the west coast of Ireland, an unlikely cast of characters come together at a newly opened inn. This "delightful [novel that] radiates the warmth and charm that fans will recognize and cherish" (USA Today).

Stoneybridge is a small town on the west coast of Ireland where all the families know one another. When Chicky Starr decides to take an old, decaying mansion set high on the cliffs overlooking the windswept Atlantic Ocean and turn it into a restful place for a holiday by the sea, everyone thinks she is crazy. Helped by Rigger (a bad boy turned good who is handy around the house) and Orla, her niece (a whiz at business), Chicky is finally ready to welcome the first guests to Stone House’s big warm kitchen, log fires, and understated elegant bedrooms. John, the American movie star, thinks he has arrived incognito; Winnie and Lillian are forced into taking a holiday together; Nicola and Henry, husband and wife, have been shaken by seeing too much death practicing medicine; Anders hates his father’s business, but has a real talent for music; Miss Nell Howe, a retired schoolteacher, criticizes everything and leaves a day early, much to everyone’s relief; the Walls are disappointed to have won this second-prize holiday in a contest where first prize was Paris; and Freda, the librarian, is afraid of her own psychic visions.

Sharing a week with these characters is pure joy, full of Maeve’s trademark warmth and humor. Once again, she embraces us with her grand storytelling.

A Week in Winter. Oh, to know these sweet, sweet stories are over forever----so sad. Just easy to read, heart touching, entrancing books. I love A Week, loved the people, and wish I could go there is afternoon. Thank you, Mayeve, for years of pleasure.

The end of an era.. I have read all of Maeve Binchys works and I will truly miss her story's. Her characters are brought to life. You feel their sorrow and happiness. She has made all her characters like your family, friends and neighbors. Time to re-read and treasure her gift to us. She was blessed with an amazing talent and we were lucky she shared it with us. Bet she is busy writing stories for us to read in our afterlife. God Bless you Maeve, your readers will certainly miss you.

super boring. this book was so boring! there was no plot. it was frustrating because it had such great potential. the author really took the time to develop the characters and the setting...and then nothing happened to them!

Fantastic book. As always Maeve Binchy delivered a human story full of vivid characters. It is very sad for the readers to realize this is her last book. Rest in peace a great writer.

Excellent. It's been a long time since I've read one of her books - and I'm so glad I decided to read this one. She was a truly gifted storyteller and will be remembered.

A week in Winter. This book weaves wonderful characters lives together with humor and poignant life situations. Some of the characters and locations of her previous books appear, but this new cast of characters are just as likely to leave impressions on your heart as all of her others. This is truly a wonderful end, if we have to have an end, and to celebrate Maeve's contributions to our own appreciation of life.

Truly Charming. What a truly charming, sophisticated novel. Deceptive in its superficial simplicity, it nonetheless delivers deep satisfaction and affection.

Beautiful. Great stories... Lovely characters a true human spirit book... Love it!

Same Old. Too many characters and no depth. Was happy to finish it

Awesome!!. Like taking a vacation but you control the time . Life stops when you put down the book and when you begin to read the vacation starts up again ! Wonderful

Reliable storyteller. Maeve Binchy is a comfortable and reliable author. This novel revolves around the Stone House in a small town called Stoneybridge on the west coast of Ireland. The scenery is incredible, the townsfolk are mostly friendly, and people come and go, loving and learning as they travel through life. Another enjoyable Maeve Binchy book.

Loved this book!. The characters are rounded and real. The setting is a character as well. This is written by an excellent author at the top of her game. Everything fits as the characters interact.

Bookmark function. Had to stop reading as iPhone continually inserts red bookmarks as I scroll through text. Bk longer using iBooks— no way to disable bookmarks.

Disappointing. Fairly typical Binchy book, except the character development was lacking. I ended the book feeling like the story wasn't over. Very disappointing end to an amazing author's library.

Forced ending. Good story. Interesting characters. But ending felt forced and left me hanging

A Week in Winter. I enjoyed this book immensely. From the very start the characters drew me in and took me along on their journeys. I couldn’t put the book down and at the same time didn’t want it to end. An impossible situation to be sure. I will read more of this author; and very soon.

A Week in Winter. A lovely read. Hated for it to end:)

A Week in Winter. Oh how I will miss her writings. This story, like all her others, leaves you feeling as though the characters are all close personal friends. I did not want the book to end, but I was so well acquainted with their lives that I half expect to travel to the cliffs of West Ireland and pick up where the book ends. Thank you Maeve Binchy for introducing me to your world. Heaven is a richer place for your presence.

The final book. Another outstanding book! Sadly, I couldn't help think about how much I will miss her books. every one of her books were fabulous. i think she was at her best with the later ones, weaving the stories and people together. It was a delight to run across characters again in later books, made me track down the old book and reread it. The lives she painted were so rich and real, I can't believe there won't be another book. RIP you were great and you are missed.

A Week In Winter. Sweet story, nice characters but certainly not a page-turner. Rather dull, kept waiting for something that never came.

A Week In Winters. A wonder story reflecting Ireland and its culture. Great character development. Pure joyful entertainment.

Not the worst book I've ever read. Because it was so awful I gave up reading it. My usual approach to buying books is to read the first few pages. If the author can't impress me in a few pages then it's a very bad sign. I would never in a million years buy this book on this basis. This book was our nascent book club's first title, and I assumed it would be at minimum well-written if not especially interesting. (My tastes usually run towards non-fiction, science fiction, and a few bits of crime fiction, but I am not complaining about the book being boring. Although it is. This book reads like a description of a story instead of an actual story. Instead of conversations we get rough descriptions of conversations. Instead of descriptions of people or things we get references to things. Characters not only lack deep personalities (Chicky's family is populated entirely with cardboard stereotypes from Irish Central casting) but the vaguest sense of reality. is he tall or short? Is she old or young? Educated? Smart? Funny? None of this is enigmatic, it's just vague. I don't want to turn the page and find put, in part because after fifty pages the reader knows he/she isn't going to find out anything, and in part because I just don't care. The seventy odd pages of Chicky's life left me wondering "I wonder when we're going to stop skipping over stuff and get to the story?" Then it ended. It's possible all the dangling threads (all, um, one or two of them) from Chicky's section will blossom into intricate consequences later, but I just don't care.

Heartwarming. Unable to put this book down. I loved how the stories moved on from person to person and the story as a whole moved on. Very, very good.

A Week in Winter. A wonderful work, final triumph for a talented writer - we will miss you Maeve Binchy! Each of the characters is woven into the landscapes of their lives, and ultimately into Stone House and Stonybridge, like a fine old tapestry. No detail is wasted, no thought left dangling. Reminds me of "The Bridge at San Luis Rey" but with a much more pleasant outcome. Binchy is one of my favorites, worth every minute of time I steal from 'obligation' to enjoy!

A Week In Winter. Great book with in-depth character detail. I would like to have known what happened to Walter or have his future integrated into the ending. That part left me slightly unfulfilled as a reader. Overall, good book.

A Week in Winter. Every book I’ve read by Maeve Binchy has been wonderful. All of the endings are pure joy.

A Winter Week. This was a very heart warming and touching novel. I loved the realism this author created with fictional characters who face life's challenges like many of the readers who get the chance to pick up this book. Thought provoking, along with a strong sense that we truly do not walk this journey of life alone.

A Week In Winter. I loved this book and it's characters! I shall miss Maeve's books.

Predictable but enjoyable. Acceptable prose, a bit light weight, a quick read. Too many characters with short tales, som whose stories are just not of interest. It's an OK book, very hackneyed, alas.

Interesting. I like Maeve Binchy, but this book was "okay". It's broken up sort of into vignettes of the characters without much plot. The narrative is good, but the book ends suddenly. I wished I'd checked it out from the library instead of paying for it.

Story Weaver. Another wonderful book by Maeve Binchy....It makes me so sad to know there won't be any more of her magical stories coming my way.

A Week In Winter Mississippi Lass. I am astounded by the shallow thinking (and I use that word loosely!) by some of the FIVE negative reviews out of a few hundred! OF COURSE she spent lots of time developing each character, but if one reads an entire Binchey it becomes obvious to MOST literate people that she is developing multiple characters in a masterful way while she focuses primarily on one. One must back up and see "the big picture" and then, recognize how beautifully she weaves together all the individuals into a cohesive story that is realistic without focusing on just the dark side of life. I suggest that dissatisfied readers stick to nonfiction until you are sufficiently schooled in the techniques of writing and reading fiction to be able to read it with some degree of creativity.

A Week In Winter. I would love to have another series of all the people in the Hotel.

Beautiful book. What a lovely surprise this was! Didn't expect much from the start, but I enjoyed the rich chacterizations so much and it was a good read all the way through. The bonus was we had recently visited. Ireland and were familiar with the cliffs of moher and some of the other references. So sorry to read of the author's passing but I will read her other books. Enjoy!

Another Great book!!. Another great book by an equally great writer. It's sad that this was Maeve's last book before she passed away. However, her legacy lives on & her wonderful stories will be around forever! A wonderful tale of strangers brought together in a way only Ms. Binchy could do. Excellent book!!! <3

A Week in Winter. Each work by Maeve Binchey has been exceptional ! I am a devoted reader of her work. Her characters are friends that I can't wait to see how their lives evolve. Read every book, you will enjoy! She will be sincerely missed!

Escape the news and enjoy some tea and scones. Really, Maeve Binchy is a tonic. Whenever I am overwhelmed by the worries of life, I pick up one of her books and they never disappoint. This is one of her better ones. Enjoy.
