The Impossible Lives of Greta Wells by Andrew Sean Greer Book Summary

From the critically acclaimed author of the New York Times bestseller The Confessions of Max Tivoli comes The Impossible Lives of Greta Wells, a rapturously romantic story of a woman who finds herself transported to the “other lives” she might have lived.

After the death of her beloved twin brother and the abandonment of her long-time lover, Greta Wells undergoes electroshock therapy. Over the course of the treatment, Greta finds herself repeatedly sent to 1918, 1941, and back to the present. Whisked from the gas-lit streets and horse-drawn carriages of the West Village to a martini-fueled lunch at the Oak Room, in these other worlds, Greta finds her brother alive and well—though fearfully masking his true personality. And her former lover is now her devoted husband…but will he be unfaithful to her in this life as well? Greta Wells is fascinated by her alter egos: in 1941, she is a devoted mother; in 1918, she is a bohemian adulteress.

In this spellbinding novel by Andrew Sean Greer, each reality has its own losses, its own rewards; each extracts a different price. Which life will she choose as she wrestles with the unpredictability of love and the consequences of even her most carefully considered choices?

Hidden Gem!. I loved this book - what a hidden gem! I could not put it down and was disappointed that I had to go to work so I couldn't finish reading it in one sitting. I throughly loved the way each of the 3 stories unfolded in in different dates, the weaving characters lives, how they could separate and come back together in another time. The book is written very cleverly and yet with great sensitivity of what it's like to live in these very different timelines. The writing itself is beautiful and I found that there were some paragraphs that I would read over and over just because of how beautifully they were worded and the thought-provoking questions that came up. It's most definitely a good read.

Good book. I enjoyed this book very much… It tells the story of a woman’s loves, feelings and heartaches as she traverses time in three different lives that touch each other in many ways…

Beware dead zones. Interesting plot and richly detailed, but lacks a few stitches in the narrative. The story will hum along nicely then suddenly, you’re backing up a couple of pages to see if you missed something. Not because it’s poorly written... but you don’t *feel* Greta’s connection with some situations or characters. These dead zones make some scenes flat or unbelievable. I kept rereading passages, seeing if I just wasn’t picking up key details. Very frustrating.

The Mysteries of Being Human. There seem to be little prose poems and jewels scattered along a path only one woman may walk. Sister, lover, friend, niece, immigrant, traveler. A book to be read and reread. A found piece we didn’t know we were missing until now.

Worth a read. A very good book. The story is quite unusual, thanks in part to its high concept. If you read a synopsis, don’t be scared off. The premise of the book is very relatable and the structure works. There are moments when this is book is very special. And others that are a bit mundane. But the author (Greer) has written something unconventional and moving. It’s not perfect, but it’s daring and unique. I recommend giving it a shot—worth a read!

Intriguing and delightful.. Smartly and intriguingly written. A delight. Fills your sci-fi and your romance needs all at once. Hauntingly full of what could be, what might be, what is.
