The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey Book Summary

"Remarkable, not-to-be-missed-under-any-circumstances."—Entertainment Weekly (Grade A)

The Passage meets Ender's Game in an epic new series from award-winning author Rick Yancey.

After the 1st wave, only darkness remains. After the 2nd, only the lucky escape. And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive. After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one.

Now, it's the dawn of the 5th wave, and on a lonely stretch of highway, Cassie runs from Them. The beings who only look human, who roam the countryside killing anyone they see. Who have scattered Earth's last survivors. To stay alone is to stay alive, Cassie believes, until she meets Evan Walker. Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie's only hope for rescuing her brother--or even saving herself. But Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death. To give up or to get up.

"Wildly entertaining . . . I couldn't turn the pages fast enough."—Justin Cronin, The New York Times Book Review

"A modern sci-fi masterpiece . . . should do for aliens what Twilight did for vampires."—USAToday.com

The 5th wave. This book is trash no one likes it Cassie is gay

Eh. The book wasn’t bad... but it wasn’t that good either. It was hard to follow and I had to look up the what a lot of things that were not easily understood. In some parts the book made me feel very uncomfortable. I’m sorry Rick but this wasn’t your best work.

Perfect. This book is very good real page turner

I loved the book. I loved the book but it has some words that are not meant for kids it would probably be for kids like 10+ other than that it was a good book

boring boring boring. just the last pages are good the rest are just narrations and thoughts of the characters and action less scenes, I dont understand how all world loves it

Nfjdjdj. Great book,. I very much enjoyed this take on post-apocalyptic alien invasion. The protagonist is a strong female lead, beautifully written as if she is your own friend.

LOVE IT. This suspenseful, moving, and action-filled novel will keep you occupied! I would've read this in one sitting if not for needing to go to bed😂 RECOMMEND!

Hunger games is better. The book was interesting at first but then it turned into a drag to read. The relationship between Evan and Cassie seems forced, unrealistic, and unnecessary. Ben and Ringer are the only characters that are interesting.

💕💕💕. An amazing novel!

Simply amazing.... This is a wonderful book that keeps you flipping pages.

Overrated. The writing in this book is not very insightful - it should not be compared to books like Ender’s Game. Ender’s Game is entirely different from The 5th Wave - they only share the same genre. Sparse sentences like “do the math” highly retract from it. The way Cassie’s thinking style is captured is very unrealistic, and I don’t imagine many teenage girls would think like her in the same situation. Books like the Hunger Games and Divergent are far more realistic in terms of characterization. There are far better books to read.

AMAZING. Completely different from what I was expecting, excellent characters and incredibly engaging.

thrilled. It was a thrilling page flipping book that I couldn't close until I finished.

An amazing read!!!. This book was impeccable. It went incredibly deep and the characters past, looks, and personality were described with the finest detail. I was hooked by the first page and would recommend it to anyone!! Buying the sequel now!

cringe-worthy. The beginning was great. It had me turning the pages and it had me wanting to find out what happened next. The characterization of the main character was a little unrealistic and out of touch with how most teenage girls actually think and speak but i could overlook it for the most part. Until the romance was introduced, or more accurately, thrown into my face from clear across left field. It was, and i’m not sure else how to describe it, embarrassing. Cassie turns into a Bella Swan clone, where she’s constantly going on and on about boys and she often goes into long and cringe inducing detail of said boys bodies. It was like all the character development that she built in the first few chapters were thrown out the window and she became this helpless, vapid, infantilized child that clung and swooned to the men around her. The love interest was also equally embarrassing and unsurpsingly an Edward Cullen clone as well. All that was missing was the glittering quality to his body in the sunlight. Not to mention, how eerily similar it is to twilight in how often it seemed as though the author inserted himself into many of the male characters. A great premise and a great start but there were so many times i had to walk away from my computer because of the second-hand embarrassment. Basically, read at your own risk.

Best book ever. I hate reading but when I sow this book when I read the first few pages I fall in love I couldn't put my phone down I read every word like if it was my last I love this and just bought the next one

Yay. ....

Overall, decent read. First, I was impressed with the detail that went into the story building. There were layers of information that made this fictional world seem real. However, the main character, female, was written by a male and it shows. I wanted it to be more and it wasn’t. Also, the first half of the book was hard for me to get through. There is way too much internal dialogue and I very much got the idea just by skimming some pages. On top of that, I personally do not like books that change character point of views per chapter or go back in time in the middle of the books. I prefer stories that play out in chronological order. Since this book consisted of these cons, I pushed through to see if it would get better. The second half of the book had a lot of action and I really did like it. I ended up reading the second book too to see what happens since the plot and story is described in a believable way. TLDR; no romance, all action, changing character pov, and lots of internal dialogue. Decent read overall.

LOVED IT.. This book is filled with so much action!! I love all the characters and they're own little action stories! This book will not disappoint. It's AMAZING.

Great read. This was a great book and I'm glad I decided to read it. Some people said it wasn't good because the ending was "unfinished" well that is how a series works . Read the other two books and you will get all your questions answered. I would not say the book was bad based off that. I can't wait to get my hands on the other two books and see the movie. I hope the movie does this book justice. I have read the hunger game series, the divergent series, and the maze runner series and I would put this one right up there with them. I'm very excited I found another series I enjoy this much. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed the above mention trilogies.

Intense. The story is full with intensity and is so real that you can literally feel what the characters are going through. Just love it and can't wait for the next book (3rd)!

trash. trash

Fantastic!. Series had me hooked. Had to pick up the second and third books as soon as I finished the first one! Couldn’t put them down!

pretty cool book. this book is great. the suspense builds more and more as you read, and as soon as something terrible or amazing happens it makes you not want to put it down. the different views of the different characters are really good too. there’s action, adventure, mystery, and some romance. read this and then watch the movie, it was fun to compare.

13 and up. This was an amazing book but however, it had some otherwise disturbing ‘scenes’ that isn’t really for young children. Although I myself am relatively young, this book should be for 13 and up. Do not let anyone younger than this read it because it will affect them in more ways than one. For an example, you will notice that their profanity ‘level’ will have gone up and they might even get addicted to books that are not for them! Thank you!!!

Amazing.. Attention grabbing (and holding). I couldn’t put it down. #TheBookIsAlwaysBetterThanTheMovie

MUST READ. BEST BOOK EVER!

Really good. I'm only on chapter 38 right now and it's super gooood. I don't read books but this is my fav. Can't wait for the movie!

Amazing. This book left me craving more. I hung to every word as if my life depended on it. Its absolutely amazing, I read this book in two days. If I had know there was another book when I had purchase the first I would have bought it too. 'Cause now I'm left wanting more and I have to wait four days to get more.

Slow. I like slow books but others don’t

epic. it is the one of the best books ever! can't wait to see the movie

Overrated. Disappointed. Story is slow. Nothing really happens. Way too much BS.

Amazing Series. Awesome story - heart-pounding and even shocking at times. It was so intriguing, each book took less than a week to finish, and I finished the second book in one afternoon. This series is so completely worth your time. It's a shame the movie didn't even come close to doing it justice. If you have seen the movie first, please don't make an opinion about the books based on the movie. There is no comparison.

The 5th Wave. So many books these days are absolute trash. The instant you become attached to the main character, they begin to fade. Or die. Or become suicidal. Or depressed. Yancey finally got one right. He wrote a book from different viewpoints, innovating on the writing process, and bringing to the table something refreshing. I highly recommend it. To any and all. I will warn that it IS a little violent, and thus deserves the young adult rating. Please proceed with caution!

👍. 👍

Ahhhh Mazing!. The fact that this has become a movie and looked made me want to read the book. I'm so happy that I did because honestly I would have missed out. Amazing storyline, great character development, I mean Evan! I want Evan! Lol! Can't wait to read the next book and now I will be going to see the movie to see how it holds up to the book.

Mixed feelings. It was a very interesting and powerful story the only thing I did not like was the bad words they ruined the story making it hard to read for people like me I later stoped knowing I should not be reading these bad words. By, emily

Good read. I usually don't write reviews but I really wanted to write one for this book because it's really good! Yet every review I see says the love portion of it makes it bad. I don't see it? I mean it's not needed but it doesn't make the book so bad that you shouldn't read it! The action is throughout the entire book and it's a page turner for sure! I really recommend reading it!

The 5th Wave. Is it worth buying???

Oh my God. Read this book in less than a week. This book is amazing! So much better than the movie! Totally worth the read!

Better than the Hunger Games!. Rick Yancey is such a gifted and artistic author who draws you into a world and traps you in it leaving you glad it isn't real, but wishing it was. This book left me eager to finish, but dreadful of ending it. Such a great read worth every penny in your pocket and minute of your time. Compared to other books, nothing has quite the "wow-factor" The 5th Wave does. Don't let anything get in the way of reading this book!

The 5th Wave. The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey is an extremely original book full of twists and turns that keep you hooked. What you would normally expect to happen in "the book world" does not necessarily always happen, which kept me reading. The 5th Wave is focused on a normal, teenage girl named Cassie. She has had a crush on Ben Parish for as long as she can remember, yet Ben has no idea who she even is. Suddenly, one day an alien ship lands on earth and begins to reek havoc. There was four waves total and an expected fifth wave, hence the title. The first wave was "Lights Out", the second "Surf's Up", the third "Pestilence", and the fourth "Silencer". All Cassie has is her dad and little brother, because her mother was killed during the third wave. Everybody on Earth is trying to survive, but not doing too good of a job doing so. Cassie is eventually separated from her brother Sam and her dad, meanwhile playing hide and seek with a silencer. On top of everything, Cassie made a promise to Sam that she would find him, and she's not about to break that promise. The 5th Wave ends with a giant cliff hanger that leaves you questioning many persons. All in all, Rick Yancey has provided us with a "not-to-be-missed-under-any-circumstances,"(Entertainment Weekly) book.

Seraphimgirl. I love this book. It has so many cliffhangers. Can't wait to read #2

Hard to follow. Interesting premise. But every character had a similar voice. So it was hard to figure out who was who sometimes.

Worst books. This is one of the worst books I’ve ever read honestly.

Yancy is a master story teller!. Fantastic book! I have read this book four times. Yancy is a master story teller! The concept of the others and the silencers is unparalelled in any other book (of the same genre) I have read thus far! Recomended to all, it can neglected by none.

A Fast-Paced Intelligent Thought-Provoking Read. I'm a 50 year old Mother of 18 year old Twin Girls. I've been an avid reader for as long as I can remember. I started reading this "Tween" Book Category to keep an eye on what my girls where reading. And... I have to admit, I feel as if I struck Gold ! The 5th Wave and The Infinite Sea by Rick Yancey - Great Stories ! I Can't wait for The Last Star !
