And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini Book Summary

An unforgettable novel about finding a lost piece of yourself in someone else.

Khaled Hosseini, the #1 New York Times–bestselling author of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, has written a new novel about how we love, how we take care of one another, and how the choices we make resonate through generations. In this tale revolving around not just parents and children but brothers and sisters, cousins and caretakers, Hosseini explores the many ways in which families nurture, wound, betray, honor, and sacrifice for one another; and how often we are surprised by the actions of those closest to us, at the times that matter most. Following its characters and the ramifications of their lives and choices and loves around the globe—from Kabul to Paris to San Francisco to the Greek island of Tinos—the story expands gradually outward, becoming more emotionally complex and powerful with each turning page.

Great book!. I am a huge Khaled Hosseini fan! I have read all his books, he is an amazing story teller. His writing in "And The Mountains Echoed" is beautiful and heart wrenching.

Best thing. I love it

Tearjerker. I don’t usually get so emotionally involved when reading fiction. But this book hit me hard. Superb writing. Worth every minute of your time.

I loved it!. The book moves around a bit through time and from the view of the different inhabitants of this novel but once you understand the flow it takes flight. It is a beautiful story that takes place over generations, landscapes, love and death.

Thousand Splendid Suns. Outstanding story thoroughly engrossing, emotionally attractive a compelling read.

Beautifully-woven story!!. I absolutely love this book. Don't want it to end!!

So much beauty. I am by all means obsessed with Khaled Hosseini. I love what he stands for and love that he brings awareness to the middle eastern cultures while highlighting it's beauty. Read this book. It's just as lovely as the others.

And the Mountains Echoed. A good story about a family separated by many situations. Very true to life as both bad and good times ensue.

It was ok. I loved (and sometimes hated The Kite Runner) but I found the style of this book with the mini stories of the characters lacking. I feel like just one story could have been the focal point and I would have loved all the details rather than the intertwined stories. And I didn't care for the ending. Can't we have a happier ending just once?

Dragged out.. I didn’t like this book as much as Hosseini’s other books. I felt like there was no central message or theme. It felt like it was all over the place. I kept reading it just so I can be finished with it and to me, the ending wasn’t worth it.

And The Mountains Echoed. The first 2/3 of this book was outstanding! The characters and settings were very well developed. About 15 times I was brought to pause and reflect on the words the writer had just written. Then all of a sudden everything became rushed! The dialogue the setting the character changes many times I didn’t even know who was speaking! Terrible and frustrating! I loved the Kite Runner and A thousand splendid Suns, both deserving of five star review. This book I’ve only given one star it just left me feeling so frustrated.

A great and emotional read!. I loved this book!! First learned about the author from The Kite runner, which I absolutely loved, therefore decided to give this book a try as well. I inhaled every page and could not manage to put the book down. Love this author!

And the Mountains Echoed. The most beautifully heart breaking & tragically lovely web of lives & loves ever woven. And I thought my story was painful.

Disappointed. I would agree with a lot of the other comments on here that this book fell flat compared to his first two novels. There were so many characters and some just appeared out of nowhere. I was so anxious to read this book and I still love the work of the author, but I was disappointed in this book overall. While I didn't want to see the end of the first two novels, I was anxious to see the end of this one.

Not up to standard. Disappointed by the book. Started so strong then faded away, characters arent well developed and not well connected.. Too long and of no use nor purpose, he could have made less characters but more in-depth, with more character building and less scenery descriptions. Something is seriously missing in the book overall.

Worst!. I am so disappointed! His first two books are all time favorites of mine. I kept waiting for this to get good and then it was over! Way to many loose ends.

The kite runner. Excellent

And The Mountains Echoed. This book utterly consumed me. Love truly conquers all.

Good read. Love his style of writing! The book is very good but I agree with others not as good as the pervious two!

Inspirational. It's amazing how this author writes. Each story comes around and finds a way touch every part of your soul. There is the meaning of the story and then something much more treasure full behind the true sense of the story. I really enjoyed this story a lot, as I have with all other preceding stories written by this author. Thank you..

Loved it!. The book grabbed me at the onset and I was compelled to read chapter after chapter to uncover more of the story!

Disappointing. I have read his other 2 books (Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns) and I expected this to be comparable. There really isn't a climax & he writes (too much) about characters that really don't have much to do with the story. I found myself rushing through it just to finish it, and not in an "exciting, can't wait to see how it ends" kind of way.

Dora Zeno. I Have read all previous books written by this author and enjoyed the subject matter and way it was communicated to the reader. I found this book too disjointed and struggled to guess/link the story line thread. However, I did persevere to the end, but did not feel satisfied at the conclusion.

And the mountains echoed. A powerful and emotional story of loss and love and ultimately the joy and cruelty of the human condition as seen through characters whose lives are seamlessly interwoven

Not as good as the first 2. Loved the first two books he wrote but this one just has too many plot lines to remember. I gave up about page 400

Disappointed. The Kite Runner is one of my all time favorite books. So I was greatly disappointed with this one. Where The Kite Runner gave such depth to the story, I felt that this one was like a sampler appetizer. It jumps from character to character and there is a lot of people involved. I didn't feel like I got to know the real story for any of them. I could not get too involved in the story, because it jumped all over.

And the Mountain Echos. Yet another moving story from a gifted story teller. Though not necessary, start with his first - The Kite Runner. Still, each one stands on it's own. I have treasured these books. Treat yourself.

Powerful!!. I finished it in less than two days!! Absolutely powerful and humane!! Can't wait for the next book!! Bravo!!

A Beautiful Story, Beautifully Told. “The rope that pulls you from the flood can become a noose around your neck.” A collection of nine short stories of sorts that all intertwine with the central story that starts off in the beginning. The writing is so beautiful and full of charm, sadness, and hope.

Very disjointed. I enjoyed the last two books by Khaled Hosseini so I was eager to read this one. Unfortunately, it was a huge disappointment. It was very disjointed, characters and story lines were abandoned. I forced myself to finish reading it, hoping that somehow everything would come together but it never did. It feels like a completely different writer than his other two books honestly.

Confused about half way in. While I enjoyed the book, I don't believe it was up to the standard of his other two novels. I got lost about half way in when the first person protagonist changed several times and I couldn't keep up with "who" was talking

Difficult to Follow and not very entertaining. I found this book difficult to follow. It could have been because I read the book in chunks at a time over several months. The author jumped around to different character's point of view, and I often forgot who was telling the story. This caused me to lose interest in the story. I loved the Kite Runner, but this book was mediocre at best.

Disappointing. I thought perhaps I was leading my reading comprehesion until I read another reviewer here that confirmed my thoughts. There are plots and characters that are never followed through on and the story never really leaves you satisfied with a full arc.

Very Good Book. I enjoyed thus book very much. The writing was descriptive a poetic. The characters drew me in. The only reason I didn't rate it higher was because I thought it dragged on a bit at the end. Nonetheless, it was a good read overall.

Absolutely beautiful.. I came across this book after having read the author's first two. The second was better than the first, and this one was better than the previous one. The characters have such depth and rich backgrounds. They compliment the main storyline and make for a beautiful woven piece of art. This is by far the best book I've read in a long while.

Amazing!!!!. One of the best books I've ever read. An intriguing story with unexpected turns and twists, flawed heroes, and truly stunning prose.

Awesome book!!!. This is such a heart warming story about people, family and the overall pursuit of happiness even at challenging times. The characters are what make this story come to life and touch your heart... Wonderful book and one I will never forget....

Well written and a great read.. This is my favorite of his three books...

It is not a book! It is a tableau!. Hosseini's new novel is unbelievable dramatic and is reflecting the life in Afghanistan and life of many Afghans. I do recommend it to all who are looking for a "novel".

Heart warming. This book stole my heart. I have read the two that preceded it, which made my heart ache for the people of Afghanistan. This book is full of love and loss. It is honest and cruel while redeeming. Worth every second.

Oh my god -- the last 100 pages are like slogging through hell. Wow. I've read his first two books...and like them. This one starts out well enough and then turns into a meandering pointless mess with characters that are irrelevant to the overall plot line. Very frustrating book. Ok, he kind of ties it together at the very end....but generally a good portion of this book falls into a complete "what's the point of this drivel?" I'd move onto something else. You'll be happy you did.

And the Mountains Echoed. Good read. I enjoy reading and learning about the people and country of Afghanistan. I felt there were characters that were left unfinished. I needed more of an ending to the many characters and stories brought to life in this novel.

Mixed feelings. Do not go into this book expecting Kite Runner or Thousand Splendid Suns as this is more of a super long novella exploring the complexities of human nature. It’s far more meditative and slow than The Kite Runner or A Thousand Splendid Suns to say the least. Overall, I would still recommend it, but if one were to dislike it, I wouldn’t be in the least bit surprised.

Great read!. Well written and educational. Definitely recommended!

Total disappointment. Irrelevant characters, irrelevant information, obvious missed connections left unaddressed. Disappointingly underwhelming.

And the Mountain Echoed. I was so excited to read another novel by Khaled Hosseini. This book started off amazing but then nearly fizzled out. Unlike "The Kite Runner" and "A Thousand Splendid Suns," which brought out nearly every emotion in me, I wasn't as moved with this book and I felt less invested in the characters. Both Hosseini's previous novels are a tough act to follow, so maybe my expectations were high. Overall this book was pretty good.

Good. Great stories

Another beautifully sad journey. Such a beautiful writer who has woven another amazing story of intertwined lives. Much of it touched my heart and I shed a tear a time or two. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Beautiful and moving. Unlike his other novels, this work is not jarring, or painful to read, instead it is moving engaging, a story of personal lives and their intricacies, there is happiness and sadness, as it should be.

And the Mountains Echoed. Disappointing after reading Hosseini's 1st books. Character development not very good.
